Eating like the locals in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Our family has raided the piggy bank and we’re now traveling the world to experience-up close and in-person-all the natural wonders and distinct cultures that our kids are studying in school.
We’re still here in the best city in the world (according to Travel & Leisure) and part of what makes San Miguel so cool is its eclectic food scene. So we’re taking a little break from filming our upscale restaurant tour to search out the great eats that were most recommended by locals. These bites may not be as adventurous as some of the street foods we just tried in Cebu City, but they’re bound to be every bit as delicious. Let’s start devouring!

ABOUT US.
We’re the Lockwoods: a family with 3 kids, 5 careers, and endless passion for adventure. Two years ago, we decided it was time for Phil's ad agency to abandon the in-person, 5-day workweek. So they 86’d the office and work hours, allowing our own family to start traveling almost constantly. We now work, school, and explore in a different place every week-from our own mountain and beach homes to exotic villas, resorts, and yachts around the world. As we experience and support diverse cultures, we hope to inspire more families to design a life of freedom and adventure.
Because there’s a new American Dream. It’s one that’s void of templated expectations, templated career paths, templated education, templated families, templated homes, and templated lives. Freedom is no longer an American tagline-it’s just the new, global way of life.
Every day that you spend doing something that doesn’t fulfill you to your core, you’re living your life on pause. You’re deferring genuine family time with no guarantee that there will be a tomorrow or a someday. Some people follow that mentality their entire lives. We’ve chosen to never live that way again.
We appreciate you following our journey. The more our channel grows, the more time we can spend traveling to more locations, contributing to these cultures, highlighting local businesses, and sharing inspiring stories from these communities. So please consider liking, commenting, and subscribing so that you can stick with us for the long haul.

Mexican culture has so much heart, and it's evident in the food. Holy Moley!! I lived in San Miguel specifically for the hotsprings. Thanks for your video, another reminder of how amazing Mexico is, and how great it is to be alive.

So do we!!!! Yum!
The Spaniards brought corn to the Philippines from Mexico unfortunately didnt bring along with them the Mexican cuisine. It would have been nice to have taco and tortilla (as an alternative to rice) as part of our food culture so heavily influenced by Chinese and Spanish cuisine.

It's almost as easy to create tortillas at home as it is to cook rice... maybe a project for this weekend? 😀

The Spanish introduced a great many things to the Philippines and the world from Mexico. For example, corn 🌽 chayote (sayote), squash, pumpkins, tomatoes 🍅 avocados 🥑 vanilla, chocolate, achiote and turkeys 🦃 to name a few.
My mouth was watering the whole time i was watching your food trip. Oh how i wish i could eat authentic mexican cuisine esp freshly-made tortillas. And i love the hot spring resort. It was beautiful (and your whole family is lovely too). Can't wait for your European trip.

Some great recommendations for our next visit to San Miguel! Also, you guys have to visit Valle Los Senderos next time. It is a lovely private eco development with natural pools, winery, restaurant and beach club with cabanas. It’s just 10 mins outside of the Centro. Great for a fun day in nature!

I really enjoyed your vlog.A big thank you for the awesome recommendations. I would like to provide some info. The cecina you mentioned in the molcajete is beef jerky. Towards the end-the dish with the mole sauce is called an enmolada. This same dish can be made with different sauces (typical fillings are cheese, shredded chicken, shredded or ground beef and shredded turkey). Enchiladas are also made with shrimp, fish and lobster). Enchiladas are also made with a red chili sauce or a green tomatillo sauce. The name of the dish will change according to the sauce. For example: enchilada (chili sauce), enmolada (mole sauce), entomatada (tomato sauce) and enfrijolada (refried bean sauce). Enfrijoladas typically have a cheese filling and are topped with crumbled queso fresco and chopped raw onions (this is a breakfast dish). Cheers 🥂

Los Milagros is my all time favourite: reliably good service, predictable, great margaritas and daiquiris!
That girl Brooklyn is just the perfect fit for San Miguel de Allende, she's so - sixties - hippie - hipster - artsy - and so on. I need a daughter just like that before moving my art workshop to San Miguel de Allende. ❤

Hello hello. Sorry haven’t watched last few vlogs. Just so many new content creators and so many Christmas content to support. Also depends on what shows up on my reco to add to my playlist. Anyway, we love Mexican food. There’s a reemergence of Mexican food (bec of birria) here in the P.I. esp in the main cities (Metro Manila). Food here looks yummy. I saw how you were raving about it on IG 😊

Dear Lockwood fam, Why ever so fit and thin and trim ? From cooking Mexican feast at home to a whole day next of eating street food the size of meal each stop --- no bulging tummies or flabs? Unfair. Oh, that food was topnotch, wish we had more Mexican food here in 🇵🇭 , Great video again guys you are best at describing what you are devouring. Loved this vlog. ♥️

I have always been fascinated by the Spanish language, culture and food. When we were colonized by the Spaniards, the greatest influence they brought upon us was the Spanish language. They somehow influenced our food too. Even though I have never been to any Spanish speaking countries, I felt like I've been there. Thanks to you. Loved your authenticity and how detailed you describe every food that you ate. So mouth watering. Always be safe. God Bless your family.

The worst thing that happens in our countries is organized crime, which has spread to the fear of so many tourists. Those cartels and guerrillas are the most stateless cartels hate our countries, and I am afraid that people will stop coming because of that.

Aww I LOVE this! Our family is looking to go on a similar adventure to yours. Although we will wait until the kids are a little older, like yours. Now we're going on shorter trips and are heading to San Miguel for four weeks in January 23. I wonder if you have any tips on learning simple videography and video editing? Would love to create a beautiful video of our small adventure to cherish for ever. Thank you!!

5:38 In my particular point of view that is the gringo way of drinking tequila, it’s frown upon among Mexicans to lighten the tequila with salt and limón, specially expensive tequila.

Good thing it’s such a walkable city! You’ll get plenty of exercise to balance all that delicious food.
husband speaking street food can be tricky especially buying it at night while waiting for a bus to take us back to Flida's Aunts home. Picked up some chicken, on the bus I try to bite into a piece, hard - my wife quickly grabs it. It was the chicken head. First few years of marriage my wife would try to trick me into eating something she liked but knew I would not. Cow tongue, small piece - looks like steak, and she won't say what part. I cut a piece, it cut like butter, so soft. I ate one small piece and said no more. I will not eat anything from inside an animal. ( no matter how good ? _ Dennis

@@AlwaysBeChanging Your family has an amazing tolerance for any food and the kids too, and Colton isn't afraid to pick up anything that climbs or crawls. I know who mom calls when she finds a bug in the house. ( some of the spiders that get in our Mactan home are as big as your hand., I could use your son for sure. ).

9:55 That thing about secondary taco is not what I would recommend, those tacos taste better with two tortillas. You should eat your taco in a way that it doesn’t fall apart. I would probably use the secondary taco concept with a taco that have a big bone in it, like chicken leg or ribs.
