I hope you enjoy my EasyThreed X1 review / getting started with 3D printing guide.
Here is more information not found in the video.
I'd actually ordered the EasyThreed K7 but somehow received the similar X1. I gave my child the choice the choice of $150 worth of Lego Technics for a gift, or we get a 3D printer. Fortunately he made the right decision after I showed him what a 3D printer was, so it's my job to supply him with 3D printed toys and things he wants!
I explain everything I needed to get started as a first time user of 3D printers, what you can do with one of these and all the problems I had.
One major overlooked part of 3D printing is 3D modeling, just printing other people's designs won't be enough! My prior experience with tools mentioned in this video was GIMP and Inkscape but they are not a requirement, I just use them as steps for turning a 2D design or traced photo into a 3D design. Tinkercad is by far the easier design tool to use, despite being in 3D, I encourage anyone who hasn't attempted 3D modeling before to learn how to use it.
I bought a 1KG roll in gray then a pack of random colours for smaller jobs. The gray has almost ran out after 3 weeks and I've ordered another 1KG in black. It's become a $10 a week hobby perhaps? Filament doesn't age well in the open air, so you don't want to have too many opened large rolls without a dehydrator or some kind of air tight storage container.
Will it pay itself off? I think it will, I've already (in the first 3 weeks used it to repair $35 worth of broken things that would otherwise need to be replaced. Then I have made a few useful things I don't need to buy like a mini vice, cord locks, countless small toys and an enclosure for my ESP32 camera. If a 3D printer is a toy, it is one of the most useful toys you can buy!
What size objects can you print? The bed size is 12 cm square, but it can only print 10CM square, I am having trouble doing large 4 cm plus prints without them coming off the bed (due to the cooler weather I hope!) but under the right conditions it should not be a problem. I am currently printing an object that is 12 cm by 1.4cm which works out nicely on a 45 degree angle, you can cut things into parts and glue them together, but a larger printer would definitely give you more choice of what you can print.
Where to keep the printer? A bedroom or a living room would be a bad idea. Mine is in my workshop / office where I film most of my videos. I close the door and open the window when its running. There is a smell, although not too strong, it's probably not the best thing for your family to breath for hours on end. You should have ventilation, but the printer can't be too cold. The perfect solution would be in a temperature controlled box with an air extractor blowing outside. PLA is used for medical implants, but is it really food grade or safe to breath every day? As with anything you should do your own research on safety and don't just rely on what others tell you.
