Are you still looking for a new meat alternative? Maybe this traditional vegetarian dish "Shanghai Vegan Chicken" will refresh you. Usually you can buy vegan chicken in Asian stores, but it's easy to make your own, you only need two ingredients, tofu sheet (bean curd sheets) and baking soda. The process is also very simple and fun! Plus you can add your own favorite spices to determine its taste and texture. The finished vegan chicken can be eaten directly with the dipping sauce, or braised and fried. Of course, you can also make more at a time and freeze it to keep it tasty and healthy.

Easy Vegan Recipe | How to make Shanghai Vegan Chicken from scratch [with Tofu sheet, delicious!]
Ingredients:
(2 servings)
250 g baiye tofu (tofu sheet, bean curd sheet)
1 star anise,1 bay leaf
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tbsp roasted sesame oil
for the dipping sauce:
2 chili peppers
2 cloves of garlic
1 tbsp of oil
2 tbsp of light soy sauce
1 tsp sugar
100 ml water

    Looks great! I wonder if this could be made with dry tofu skin? Maybe just cook longer? It is the woody texture to difficult to erase?

    Thank you so much for your message! I was really curious about what you mentioned and wondered if dried tofu skins could be used to make vegetarian chicken. Fortunately, I had the necessary ingredients at home, so I tried it last night. I followed the method shown in the video but shortened the cooking time for the tofu skins since they seemed very thin, and I was worried they might fall apart. Fortunately, they were able to form a roll, though some slices broke apart and weren’t very intact when cut. The binding effect between them wasn’t very good. I pan-fried them with some oil and seasoned them simply with salt and pepper. The taste was pretty good. However, there’s a significant difference compared to vegetarian chicken. The texture wasn’t as thick and glutinous as vegetarian chicken but was very chewy, offering a completely different mouthfeel. So, if you want to experience the original taste of this recipe, it’s better to use Baiye tofu skins:-)!

    Hello! I used a pure linen kitchen cloth. You can use any clean kitchen cloth that doesn't have a particular smell to it:-)!

    @beatelachmannklasserezept366 Du kannst frischen oder gefrorenen Baiye Tofu 百页豆腐 (auch genannt als thick bean curd sheet) in gut sortierten asiatischen Geschäften kaufen. Wenn es in Deiner Stadt zufällig goasia Markt gibt, dort findest Du es sicher😀

    @@janicelum5169 不是必须,但多煮一会儿,有助于素鸡拥有一个稍微浓重的调料底味(八角,香叶和盐)😀
