Easy Upgrades for an Inexpensive Band Saw

Ойын-сауық

I bought a 14 inch Porter Cable band saw for the 200 square foot tiny workshop and wanted to build it up to perform as good as its more expensive competitors. I added upgrades, such as a six inch riser block and a bandsaw fence to up this saw's game. Compared to other brands, this is an inexpensive saw, and now is able to compete!

    Way to go man - I made all the same upgrades to mine, the last thing your going to want to upgrade is a higher horsepower motor so you can actually get your new resaw capacity without the motor bogging or stopping - I went to 2 HP and holy smokes it makes my saw function as well as a $1700 luguna.

    @@MakeitGoode1 id love to be able to tell you which motor to go with, but unfortunately I have a 14" central machinery bandsaw that is really close in design, but I know the pulley ratios will be way off, so you will want to look at the spec of your current motor and find the RPM. The RPM is what you will want to base your search with, then ensure you have the same size/type shaft and that its still at your desired voltage and eye ball your mounts the best you can, you may get lucky with one that fits like I did or you may have to drill some different mounting holes. Good luck!!! I'm hoping to see a follow up video! ;) keep up the good work

    About 3 1/2 years ago I bought that same saw used from a tool consignment shop a few towns over. It had the Kreg fence & I paid about 1/2 the retail price because it was used. I stuck it in my garage & knew I wouldn't be able to really use it till I got the garage into shape. It's taken me all this time to upgrade the garage into a small (12x17) but well equipped wood working shop. I love this band saw! My background is 45 years building sail boats in a fully equipped shop with full size everything, & I still love this saw. I never knew Porter Cable offered a riser block! I had looked online & found one that said would fit with some drilling & taping ......... NO THANK YOU! As soon as I send this message I'm going to the PC site & getting my own. Do they have an upgrade for the blade guides? The cool blocks work well but bearings would be much better. The only thing I don't like is the dust collection but I can deal with it.

    I have this same saw, riser and fence. Of note, you really should make sure your wheels are in alignment before tightening everything down. There is a lot of wiggle room with those blocks and misaligned wheels can really negatively affect the cut quality and performance of the saw. Especially if you go to bigger 3/4" blades (not recommend by Porter Cable) that push the capacity of the tires.

  • @MakeitGoode1

    @MakeitGoode1

    Жыл бұрын

    That's a great tip! I've not run into any issues with alignment, but could certainly see how that would be an issue. The biggest blade I'm currently running is a 1/2" rip blade, and it does an awesome job. I just set ripped a 11.5" x 24" piece of mahogany and it performed exactly as expected. Looking at the setup, I could certainly increase the width of the blade on this saw.

  • @joelrybacki2603

    @joelrybacki2603

    Жыл бұрын

    @Make it Goode 3/4" is about the biggest you can go and that is pushing it both blade capacity and power, and only if you adhere to the center of the blade on the center of the tire alignment philosophy. If you try to run the gullets center of tire, you won't have enough room to adjust the guides back far enough unless you upgrade to the Carter guides (I think, I don't own a set - yet). All-in-all, great saw for the price but I do envy my co-worker's 17" with a 1.5" carbide blade running off a 5hp motor....

    Great video. One question, will you measure the dia. of the new guide rod where it slips into the blade guide? I bought Jet bearing guide rollers for my Porter Cable to test fit them on the rod before I purchase the PC riser. The jet riser kits rod is 7/8" all the way down the length. Porter cable rod I have has a small step down where the guide attaches .822". If the PC's new rod has a step down, the I'm going to purchase the Jet kit so the guide fits tighter. Thanks again.

  • @MakeitGoode1

    @MakeitGoode1

    2 жыл бұрын

    Russell, yes, the longer PC guide rod has the same step-down as the original. That leads to my question on whether the Jet rollers have a set screw or compression ring to hold them onto the rod? I've been considering the same ones and may have to reconsider depending on how they attach. Thanks!
