Easy Under Hood Cleaning: Motorvate’s DIY Garage Ep.25

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this episode of Motorvate’s DIY Garage, we show a quick and easy way to clean under the hood. This is also known as an “Engine Shampoo” which is really a silly name.
In the past we have used other “engine de-greasers”. They work well, but really smell bad for a few weeks. Not nice!
Simple Green doesn’t smell at all and does a great job removing all the dirt under the hood.
We do this every spring to all out cars!

    Hi Frank, great video as usual. Once clean these engine compartments are very easy to keep clean with a damp towel after wash and dry. When spraying water in engine bay I like to take some aluminum foil and cover the alternator to keep as much water away as possible. Finish off with 303 protectant on plastic and rubber hoses after everything is dry. Hardly anyone bothers to even pop their hoods. Takes minutes to wipe and do a visual check of fluid levels, tap out air filters, battery terminal check and for any possible leaks or problems. Thank you!

    I use simple green on my engines as well. The only difference is I use a detail brush to agitate the cleaner, hose off the engine, then use either a shop vac on blow or my air compressor and blow the water out of all the electrical connections and just do a basic dry of the engine. That may also work for getting water out of the V (I only have 4-cyl engines, so no trouble there). I wash my engines every oil change (10K miles) and they always look pristine.

    Hey Eugene Tooms, On a cold engine, you cold try spraying some cleaner directly on the side of the engine, let it sit for 5-10 minutes (depending on the cleaner you are using) and then hose it off using a light to medium force spray. Then start the engine and let it warm up to evaporate all the water on your exhaust. Good luck!

    Hey mjseltzer22, Thanks for your comment. In looking at the Simple Green FAQs (simplegreen.com/faqs/) they say there is no issue with aluminum, just don't let it soak for more than 10 minutes, so I think all is OK. I will look into Meguiar's Super Degreaser, but after a quick search, it may not be available in Canada. :(

    Hey Jonathan Dinh, Yes... and that is why I put the engine cover back on. Ohter engines may require a different approach. Generally, most electrical items under the hood are designed to be "water resistant"... a quick gentle spray on the engine should be OK.

    No need. For the video I didn't, just don't turn on the ignition while you are cleaning the throttle body. If you don't mind resetting your emission monitors, feel free to disconnect the battery. Just don't do that within about 4-5 weeks of an emissions test. (if your area has them)

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey James Nunez, That is an EXCELLENT question! In the 20+ years I have been doing this, I have never covered the alternator. and haven't had any issues. BUT I also don't spray it directly with water. Most of the engine accessories are "water tolerant" (not water proof) and should be fine. If you are worried, allowing a few minutes for most of the water to drip off before starting may give you some peace of mind.

    Hey Jc P, It is good to be cautious! I have used this process to clean up the engine bay on many cars since about 1995 without any issues. Since we drive cars in the rain, the engine has some water resistance. Here are some tips: • Just use enough water to rinse away the cleaner • Don't use high pressure water spray • Wipe up any "pools" of water • Let the car "drip dry" for 10-15 minutes before starting If this does worry you, you can always just use a rag and wipe away any dirt. Good luck with what ever you decide!

    Hey Tony Larios, If you are talking about when spraying the water, you may be right, but I like the idea of minimizing how much water gets into the "inside" of the V (where the knock sensors are) If you are talking about while driving it... I agree... I don't think there is a difference. BUT my intake just might be a little cooler and that makes me think my engine is happier :)

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    Hey Ali a, To be honest, I am always a little nervous as well. BUT with having the engine cover on, most of the spray is actually around the engine, where the water really can't pool and cause issues. I also don't spray water directly on the engine. You don't want to fill your spark plug holes with water or have it pool in the valley just under the intake manifold, where the knock sensors are. If you are worried, just make sure to go for a nice HOT drive to evaporate any water on the engine.

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    6 жыл бұрын

    Good question.... I expect the air filter seal to be air tight (we don't want dirty air bypassing the air filter) so then it should also be water tight. Just don't use a high pressure spray and hold it on the air filter area. If you are worried, just remove the air filter and you have nothing to worry about. :)

    All cars are designed to prevent water intruding into the wires and connectors. They are not "water proof" but what is called "weather resistant" When you are driving you car in a strong rain storm, the engine is getting a little wet. AND since the wiring is designed for it, there isn't any problems. When I clean my engine, I use as little water as possible and look for ways to protect / prevent water from filling up the spark plug wells (holes)
