Chicken Tractors are our favourite way to house and move our meat birds!!
Chicken tractors can literally be built with ANYTHING you have available to you!! The main thing you need is some coverage from the rain and wind and enough room for them to move around a little and have a place for their feed and water buckets!!
The idea of a chicken tractor is to have an open bottom to allow them to feed on the fresh grass and a way to pull them along once the birds eat all the grass and or cover it with poop!
With 15 to 20 birds per tractor we move them every 2-4 days depending on how the area inside the tractor looks! At the beginning of them going outside we can sometimes get away with leaving them in one spot for 5 days but the bigger they get the more they will be eating and messing up the ground under them much faster!
For this build we found a neighbour who was getting rid of an old metal swing frame, another neighbour had gifted us some Chainlink and chicken mesh fencing, we gathered some old decorative lattice that was tucked away under the back step for such a project and we repurposed the tarps that we had covering our wood pile for the winter!! So this was truly a $0 build!
