Easy Secondary Motion in Adobe After Effects
Create secondary motion quickly! Secondary motion adds a lot of life to your characters, but it's hard! We'll work from a very basic character and apply secondary motion in after effects using rotation, puppet pins, and a new script from Bear Studios!
The first 500 people to use promo code ECAbramsCSR20 when you buy the Character Swing Rigging at aescripts.com/character-swing... will get 20% off.

This is exactly what I've been needing. Can't wait to use it in my next project! Cheers!
wow, thank you! Nice tutorial :)
Love it - another fantastic way to achieve secondary motion with shape layers like this is to animate the bezier on a thick stroke to make stuff appear like it's bending etc!

Let me just bring the VO down an octave and we'll be spot on ;)
Thank you ! Love it
very nice, gonna use it soon
Thanks for sharing!
Your commentary always cracks me up! Another great video!
amazing
Awesome
Hey, thanks for a tutorial. I'd like to know how did you add the depth to the beak when its opened? It is a 3D layer or some keyframe/script involved?

It's actually much simpler than all that. It's all just path deformations. In the case of the internal shadows of the beak, no keyframes at all. Just shape layers that appear 3d. It's a classic ECAbrams lazy character.

OH okay. I was making it really complicated in my head ;-)
Really great work! I'd like to get the swing rig, but I wonder how this will work with RubberHose, DUIK and other rigging scripts!

Works very well. Since it can take in rotational or positional data it's an easy integration.
Oh come on dude It's 5 AM in here and I really want to sleep 😭😭

@ weebs, it's 10 am and I'm still doing client work... yeah I suck at deadlines, my sleep is forever broken. :(
This is something mind blowing lmao.
I was wondering if this script will work with DUIKBassel. Since im Rigging my characters with it and it creates tones of expressions will it cause any contradiction ?

Good question. I have not combined them myself to find out. But I think as long as you have the correct diver selected, and the CSR chain is outside the DUIK chain, and added after, you should be fine.

it does
from your tutorial I see that the swing is following the data that moves side to side but would it work too if the the data moves up and down or rotation?

it does indeed. Grab the newest version of the plugin to enjoy those features.
Awesome. Are semi-automated secondary animations like these only possible with a script/plug-in like _Character_ _Swing_ _Rigging_, or can this be achieved with expressions and maybe a headache or two? I would certainly be interested in learning how to achieve this effect myself from scratch. But… I mean… since I'm going down that rabbit hole, what are your thoughts on using scripts-insofar as they certainly can make life easier for us, but in the meantime they bypass some degree of knowledge? To that I mean, of course I get the value of any tool that can lighten my workload and increase quality, but as I'm still learning the ropes, my fear is relying on a tool when I don't really understand what it's doing. Should we learn the long version, before we learn the shortcut? Or am I overthinking this, and I should just shut up and buy the script? Amazing tutorial as always. Thank you for all that you do for us.

You can totally do that yourself if you have a good sense of rhythm

Excellent points. Thanks for chiming in. The script looks incredible, well done. It's just that I find expressions so intimidating, I worry that when guys like you are doing all the heavy lifting for me, I'll never really understand them. (Though *of* *course* I appreciate the work you put in!)
i cant buy, :( can anyone share this scrip for me.. please...
Hi Abramas, I am a big fan of your bro channel, could you help me with an urgent question bro? I am trying to apply this to a project but when I do the erect effect of the hair they do not apply the action of putting all the movement boxes on the nodes, nothing appears, I need to know thanks
That's some tasty code.

It combines very well with the JnS. Check out some of the gifs that Bear studios put on their twitter to see it in action. Lots of beard, moustache and hair motion.
hey,it is a good tutorial.but I have a question,Why does my AE do not have this puppet engine option?I can not figure it out(it is AE CC 2018)

I'm using CC 2018 in the tutorial. There should be a little pin icon in the toolbar? Is there no such icon?

Ciao Evan, you may put the word "script" into the title, next time you promote a script. 🕊

And that its a PAID script
Hey Evan, It would be cooler if we could have a way to do this without a paid plugin. Looking forward to such video.

That would be quite a tutorial. If we wanted to do this procedurally, we would bascially be recreating what the plugin does. Taking in position and rotation, turning that into inertia, combining that with the existing movement, reversing, decaying... it's a lot of work to code up. If we want to do this manually, then it's just more keyframes and understanding the logic of movement and key-framing accordingly. But again, that's a heap of labour. Neither is really going to be a satisfying short cut I don't think.
wow good voice
The nulls go off the artboard, nowhere near the Pins I've created :/

Finally found the problem. It doesn't work with "continuous rasterize" option.
Please credit all the music in your videos, including this one.
Isn't this follow through and not secondary action? :)

What an achievement
You could have said before that a script is needed...
If you know principles of animation then you can accomplish this easily. You don't need scripts lmao. This is known as follow through and overlap. C'mon now...
