i use oacencast rods myself, I've had great success with them up here on the Lincolnshire coast. big cod, whiting, flatties, hounds and so on. like you say in the video, for beginners a cheap rod and reel is all you need. I've been at this for almost 40 years now, and have never spent over £60 on a rod or reel....

Agree 100%. Big hooks/ big baits catch BIG FISH ( if the crabs and toddlers don't steal it...), smaller hooks/baits, catch ALL fish....

I am a recent subscriber, I love your attitude about fishing. Having been born and bred in the states, I was raised for game fishing or fishing to fill a freezer. I am now retired almost 4 years and haven't fished in almost 20 years. Got all my yard done and fixed up my home, so now I need something to fill my time. I could take a job, I did that for 45 years, or go fishing. I am going fishing with your relax attitude. Thanks a lot. Tight Lines, I will keep watching.

Thank you so much for this. It's been over 20 years since I meddled with sea fishing. I used to go with my late grandad to Dover and other places on a charter. Watching this has brought back many memories. I'm off to Pennan(Aberdeenshire) on Saturday for a couple of weeks and I'm keen to ping a few lines out to sea and see what happens! Anyway all the best buddy.

Stevie D Hi well I haven’t caught a cod off that beach for years, odd codling, loads of whiting yes. In the south only venues like Chesil and the Bristol Channel offer realistic chances of cod. Codling can be caught from quite a few beaches but bigger fish are rare from the beach. Bill

Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed it and it brought back memories. I saved up for ages when I was a kid to buy a 12'foot beachcaster and an Intrepid Sea-Streak reel. You could buy fresh lug from bait diggers or ragworm if you wanted. Took me a while to learn how to cast properly and how to use the 'thumatic' feature on the reel but it all came good in the end. I used that gear on the beach and, now and again, off the end of the north pier at Blackpool.

attymarco Hi I still have a “sea screech” in my collection! It’s a shame that the uk industry didn’t develop that reel. My rods at that time included a 10 ft hollow glass beach rod, I think a Milbro, and my boat rods were solid glass with a Penn Sea Boy! But I caught big fish of the beach and a 20 lb cod wasn’t unusual, but I never managed one, loads of fish up to low doubles. How different to today’s scene! Bill

Thanks Bill! My health is not good either - I was rushed into hospital 12 months ago with a heart problem & still not right, so not much chance to get out myself this year. We are right next to the sea down here in Plymouth, but surprisiingly, there a few decent beach or rock marks to get to easily if a bit fragile. Stay safe Bill, tight lines & look after yourself.

neil dwyer Hi well I hope you enjoy using your new tackle and catch plenty of fish. Preserving normal blow lug is virtually impossible but black lug gutted and wrapped freeze well. The ones in this video were ungutted, I think, but work fine. As to the rods two things, just get some reflective tape wrapped in a spiral between the tip and first ring and they will show up brilliantly in the beam of a head torch. The second point relates to casting those rods. Don’t use a lead heavier than 150 grams and try casting off the ground as I demonstrated in this video and the one on the field. They respond nicely, just remember, relax, slow in, fast out. That is the secret of long smooth casting. Don’t attempt to pendulum cast the action is not right! Have fun, Bill

ggwildlife Hi yes a good Spod rod will do fine. I have used my Fox £60 spodding rod with no problems. As for hooks go for the strongest Aberdeen patterns. I use a Mustad 3261 BLN, don’t forget in the daylight you will probably have to go for distance so you will need a shockleader but at night a short lob will often suffice. Have fun. Bill

What is your goto setup you use on a regular basis. I also would not recomend brighton casting continental style rods. Its abgrwat cast but puts a lot of force through blank, especially the tip. More suitable for better quality more stiff action rods

  • @easyfishing1936

SmokeSolo33 Hi well I use several depending on where and how I feel. For most of instructional video’s I use a pair of Shakespeare Agility 12 ft 9 ins, matched with a pair of Penn fixed spools. They are very versatile rods capable of more distance than most anglers can manage. Matched with Nanofil line they have been very good. Other than that I have a pair of Zziplex 2500’s with proper Fuji braid guides and a double reel seat. These I love and use with both multiplier and fixed spool reels. For heavy work and off the ground work I have a 13 ft Tricast and a 12ft 6 in Daiwa copy. For keeping my casting ok I often practise with an old unbraked Penn multiplier reel becuse if you can hit the rod with one of those and still be in control you really can cast!!. As for continental rods and Brighton Bashing have a look at Sonik’s video with Dean Bass who hits well over 200 yards with the Brighton cast, that’s on KZread! Virtually any rod can manage an inside lead layout if cast with care, slow in and steady is the key with a lot of left hand pull at the end. But a lot depends on the quality of the caster. Bill

@@easyfishing1936 great video showing you dont need expensive gear. I use multipliers on a conoflex and 3 different zzippys (2 which are on the stiifer end of the scale) It took me a good few years to get to this collection. I started on £15 rods, then used £100 leeda icons for a few years. If I tried my current set up when I first started they would be unusable, especially the two stiffer zziplexs
