Easy DIY herringbone table from “Banana” wood.

Hello all,
I'm trying out a new video style using voiceovers to hopefully increase the viewer experience and make it easier to teach and demonstrate, let me know what you think.
Back to the video, this is a good and easy project for the amateur woodworker.
The material costs are low as the whole project cost just less than £80 which is about $95 at the current exchange rate.
The longest section of wood in the herringbone pattern dictates the whole size of the table. I made the longest section 22 1/2" (57cm) which created an overall table size of 31" x 64 1/2" (78.7cm x 163.8cm).
As always you are responsible for your own health and safety, I do my best to demonstrate the safest practices and the correct use of tools but ultimately you need to take the time and effort to ensure you are using correct practices and procedures.
Have fun and I hope you enjoy the project!

Anastasia! Lovely to hear from you! Thank you for your very kind comments, we are bouncing back after a very difficult year. Everyone loves the table and as for the wooden plugs, yes it’s a really great tool! I did a quick demo on the video and took the plug from a random piece of scrap, if you can take the plug from the reverse side of the section you are drilling you can often get the identical grain pattern. With hindsight I should have used the darker coloured titebond as well. Thanks again for watching, I’ll be in touch soon!

Thank you Sir, I really appreciate the feedback. The table has been in use for over a month now, I don’t mention it at all to visitors but they are instantly drawn to it, say over and over it’s beautiful and immediately sit down at it, I see that as a compliment! I’ve had two commissions for one from house guests alone! With honest hindsight I would suggest two 45degree braces from the bottom cross bar to the upper part of the table leg frame. There is no wobble at all at the moment but I think it future proofs it a bit and carries on the chevron vibe when you look at it from the side. Anyway I’d love to see your results and here if you have any question. Many thanks again!

Thank you for your kind and constructive comments. I’m still very much finding my feet with this video making process, some love the music tracks I pick some do not, it’s always hard to find a balance but I’ll get better.

Great table. I am building one for my daughter. Can you provide a list of wood you purchased so I know how much to buy.

Sincerest apologies, for some reason I’m not getting message notifications 🤔. I can’t remember the quantity I bought now as it was last year I built it, but if you still need an approximate quantity then contact me through my website and I’ll work it out. Also if you need any help or advice during the construction. Again apologies, I try to respond to all messages. 😊👍🏻

hi! Nice work man! hope you are well... I am thinking of making a table like this but I am worried about movement in the wood ... how is it holding up? are glue and screws enough to keep it straight?

Hi there, thanks for the positive feedback! That’s a good question. I built it over a year ago and the only movement I got was about 1mm separation along one internal joint, this closes itself up in the winter. I’ve been very pleased with it and gets used constantly by my family. I’ll give it a light sand and revarnish in a couple of years I think. 😊👍🏻

@@MattBerryCustom ok, sounds good! I am going to let the wood dry for some time before I start, just to be safe... here in Sweden the "bananawood" are 45x70 spruce.

About twelve hours labour time altogether. Obviously spread over a couple of days to allow glue drying time. 👍🏻

Hiya, thanks so much for making the video, it's so helpful! I just wondered whether you screwed in both sides when putting the chevrons on top of eachother? Also do you know the lengths of the screws you used?

Good morning, no sorries necessary! It’s just 2”x3”, the same as what is used in most of the tables construction. Hope this helps! 😊
