    Just subscribed. Best custom display on KZread! I've casually been looking for a display for a few years and seriously been looking for one for 3 weeks and nothing beats this one. In addition, too many collectors go black. Even some of the most popular content creators, but white is the way to go. You can't see much of the detail in black. This even rivals Modu Case. I want to test using clear acrylic corner moldings. 2 even, for each of the front pillars for added support. This way the pillars don't get on the way of the figures. Thanks man!! You did it.

    Thank you so much! It means a lot to me. White definitely brings out the detail in your collection. I feel that there is an elegance in black but it feels muted. My Darth Vader figure pops better with the white. I'd be interested to see how the corner moldings turn out. I'm enjoying how people are customizing the display further to make it their own. I've debated for awhile to give my feedback here. So far i've built two cabinets. The first Cabinet was done almost identical to this one, a 24" x 48" muscle rack. Second Cabinet was a 18" x 36" botless design (All i had room for). I applied a different technique building the second cabinet after doing the first cabinet. Here are my problems with the first Cabinet. 1) I didn't like the lighting bars, I returned them, and bought LED Strips. Was cheaper in the end, and I have it with a controller now, it took more work because I LED stripped 3 layers, and soldered wires to the strips to connect them together, the otherall look, is much nicer for me. 2) After the first day of putting up the acrylic, I already had torn edges of the vinyl tape, and I really didn't like the vinyl tape in the first place, because of the overlapped corners of tape. 3) The Magnet Tape. I didn't think this was strong enough to begin with, and after sometime the magnet tape pulled off the acrylic panels and became an annoyance. panels would fall off in the middle of the night. 4) The Cabinet, I hated the expoded rivets, and the post connector. It didn't sit flush with the foam tape, and I could visibly see the gaps. 5) I hated the fabric design on the shelves, and I hated that I had to cut the corners, with the new LEDs and the soldered wire I didn't have to cut the corners at all, it fed through the gap just fine. 6) The backing... please look ahead at his further videos, the PVC boards was an amazing change to these. What I did to improve this Cabinet. 1) For the Acrylic vinyl tape, I just put a dab of glue on the edge, and folded the torn piece back, you can notice it still but its fine. 2) I purchased on Amazon Double Sided Tape Heavy Duty, this stuff is a bit more expensive, but the adhesion on it works great. My magnets don't pull off the acrylic anymore, and I did originally follow the doubling up of Magnet tape originally, I think this extra lift from the double sided heavy duty tape makes a better seal to the cabinet with the thickness of this foam. 3) Changing the LEDs to strips, instead of those bars, lets me not cut the corners of the wood. 4) I painted the wood instead of using fabric, looks better. 6) I originally used black acrylic panels for the backing, using the PVC boards is 10/10 suggestion he gives in a future video. To my smaller cabinet, second attempt. I did things differently, and I absolutely love the cabinet and how it turned out. I put more elbow grease into it though. 1) I wanted to avoid rivets and the post connector. I went with the boltless design. it looks much cleaner, and there is more surface area for the magnets to grab to. 2) I decided to change magnets. No longer using magnet tape, but using magnet bars. When you take two magnet tape and stack as shown in this video, you get close to 3mm, technically 3.1mm, so i purchased 3mm magnet bars. I put behind it Gorilla Tape Adhesive, the strong 50lbs tape, and cut out the appropriate size for each bar. This gave it some height, but this tape is super strong. The magnet bars are also really strong as well. With using full open cell foam (like used in these cabinets, without cutting in half) it makes a strong, secure seal to the cabinet now. 3) I hated the vinyl tape, and here is what took forever. I got my acrylic cheap, and my place charges 1 price for as many cuts as I want with the acrylic I purchased, so each shelf had cut acrylic, front and side panels. I started from the bottom worked my way up, and made measurements with the film still on. I marked all the edges of the cabinet. With that, I took a straight edge and made my lines, cut the lines, and peeled the film on the edges. The edges then were spray painted with Krylon spray paint black. This looks amazing. I use the back side of the panel to show outwords, and the side that is painted has my foam, and magnets. So the spray job doesn't have to be pretty because what is layed down is pretty perfect on the underside when looking at it. This makes my cabinet look way more professionally done. 4) to seal off the top and bottom i'm using 10mm crafting foam, and the double sided tape I used to repair my first cabinet to hold it on. With using a boltless frame the frame sticks out a little further than the shelving bar, so there is a noticable gap. This crafting foam is 10mm thick, closed cell foam, pretty dense stuff, but it seals in the panels nicely. 5) I again used LED strips, I have it on a KASA outlet, so I can turn it on or off from google home/my phone app. 6) I used the pvc backing again, as suggested, great suggestion, as you can slide it behind the laimnate shelving, and add a thin stirp of magnet tape to the edges. 7) The boltless had laminated shelving, 10/10 better than the wood shelving, and modifying plain wood shelving with fabric or painting. I have not done floating shelves yet, and I plan to do it with the botless design which may come into some troubles with tightening the Aluminum bars.

    Thanks for sharing. I'm a bit of a Lego junky and a few years ago I purchased a couple of PAX units and shelves to display some of my collection. Problem I ran into is that this is in my home office space and I have multiple computers and a ceiling fan on 24x7 and now have a dog in the house so dust and hair are a huge problem. I've been trying to figure out a way to close off the units and I think with some modifications I could implement this on the PAX units. Your lighting instructions are certainly something I'm going to have to look into implementing as well. I might even look into swapping a few of the wooden shelves with some acrylic ones too. Thanks again for sharing these videos; you really got the creative juices flowing on how to take my displays to the next level!

  • @PopCultureLivingRoom

    Thanks for watching! You could definitely do this with a PAX. It would be real easy. You could use metal tape and tape the edges of the PAX with it and use the magnets on the acrylic and attach it that way. My hanging display case video talks about metal tape a bit and might give you an idea or two.

    @@PopCultureLivingRoom Awesome. The display is still in the early stages but I anticipate that it will come out great. I plan on using the same LED lights and techniques you demonstrated in your videos. However, I am going to black it all out instead of whiteing it out. I also plan on using black felt instead of the faux leather for the base of the shelves. I also think I'm going to use the PVC sheets for the back panels as you demonstrated in your part 3 video. I'll keep you posted on the progress. Thanks for the advice and quick response.

    I double up on the magnetic tape because of the rivets on the display. My display cabinet has rivets. Other style cases do not have rivets. Does your display case have rivets on it? I am not 100% sure if the foam thickness will impede the magnets if you decide to use one layer.

  • @PopCultureLivingRoom

    I did try that at first. It sounds easy but can be difficult because before you press down on the glass you have to have it perfectly lined up. If you don't they will be in the wrong spot and you'll have to redo it. I'm too much of a perfectionist and they never ended up being in the right spot. It ended up being easier for me to measure things from the top. By no means am I saying you shouldn't try it yourself because it might work for you. @@PopCultureLivingRoom my other tip from related projects is to only peel the far ends (like the last ½ inch) of the sticky side, and fold the paper over. This will let it stick but can be removed by pulling from the middle until you're lined up perfectly, then pinch the folded paper and pull back slowly at a shallow angle as you press the strip down and it should keep itself aligned.

    How has the magnetic tape held up? And instead of cutting the acrylic in 3 separate parts I was planning on just having one whole sheet since I might adjust the shelves to different heights in the future so do you think the magnet from the tape will be able to hold a whole sheet?

  • @PopCultureLivingRoom

    @PopCultureLivingRoom

    Thanks for watching Josh! As for the acrylic staying magnetized to the shelf, I have had no issues so far. They have been staying on great. I am in the middle of making an update video and in the video I will be suggesting using acrylic weld which will adhere the magnetic tape to the acrylic better. I have one or 2 strips that, when I remove the panel, the magnetic tape sticks to the shelf and comes off of the acrylic. As for a full sheet holding, I am not sure because you will have less magnetic tape used which would decrease the hold. You may need wider magnetic tape to have more surface area to cling on to. Another option might be going with a thinner front acrylic which will make it a bit lighter.

The foam will come above the magnetic tape so when you put it on the frame it will compress down and conform to any ridge or protrusion created by the brackets and rivets. Closed cell foam is too rigid and does not work. If the frame didn't have these brackets and rivets, you wouldn't need the foam as all you would need to do is put a continuous piece of magnetic tape on each side. Hope this helped.

    Good morning! The open cell foam is 1/4" thick. It's this thick to rise above the magnetic tape and then when you attach it to the frame the foam compresses and will contour over any bump or irregular part of the frame. One thing I would highly recommend is to use the magnetic tape I use on my display. I tested several types of magnetic tape in this by far is the strongest.

    @@PopCultureLivingRoom Okay just making sure learned if you use normal round magnets you have to use one on panel and one on frame with both being mounted with two sided tape. Because in order stop magnet from sliding down you need way more force then the weight of the panel. You risk snapping the plexiglass when you go to take it off if you go that high. Found this out on old piece I had laying around.

  • @PopCultureLivingRoom

    Hi! I chose white because I wanted a brighter display. I like the way my figures look in the display with the white. I do have a second garage shelf next to this garage shelf and the top two sections are white and the bottom is black. I also think I'm going to make the bottom of this main display case black also. I like having an options. You can totally paint the shelves. I prefer the look of the fabric. It's all about preference. I've had people on here paint their shelves. Some have used wallpaper on their shelves. Some have used bed sheets. I view my tutorial videos as a starting point. You can make your display case any way you want. You should check out my display case tribute video and you'll see all the different ways people have made their display cases. It's quite extraordinary and I love seeing the variations. Thank you so much for watching! If you do decide to build a display case, please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. I'm here to help.

    Has anyone tried using soapy water while applying the vinyl tape boarders? I know that method is helpful when applying vinyl decals on cars to eliminate air bubbles and allow you to still move the decals into the perfect position after applying it. Curious to know if it is helpful for this as well

    Acrylic sheet thickness... now that you have had the units for a while, would you still use 1/16" for the sides and 3/32" for the front?

  • @PopCultureLivingRoom

    @PopCultureLivingRoom

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes. I never take the side panels off so the thickness doesn't matter. The 1/16 looks great and it's cheaper. You can always do 3/32 sides but you'll pay more for minimal benefit. In the front I would not go lower than 3/32. Having the slight more thickness gives the acrylic a little more rigidity so they're not super flimsy feeling when you take them off. Hope that helps.
