Easy DIY Concrete Lamp

In this video I show you how I make my modern or industrial style concrete lamps. If you're interested in the details of this build, feel free to ask me in the comment section.
1. Crush the glass of a light bulb and take al the stuff from the cap so you're left with an empty cap. Fill the cap with hot glue and press a bolt in the glue when its still hot. Fill the rest of the cap around the bolt with glue.
2. I used a pre-assembled light socket with cord, switch and plug. Make sure that you have a good tight fit when you screw the cap with the bolt on to the PVC end cap.
3. The size of the PVC tube is all up to you. As long as you can fit a light socket inside te tube with some extra space around it, it will do the job.
4. Make sure you have a tight seal around the end cape and the tube and around te hole where the cord leaves the tube. There will always be some water leaking but prefend it as much as possible.
5. I used some standard concrete and used a screen to sift out the biggest parts of gravel. Add water until u reach the same consistency as in the video. Don't use less water, because concrete needs water to get strong.
I used the following materials:
-pre-assembled cord with switch, plug and socket
-PVC tube and end cap
-cap of a light bulb
-nut, washer and bolt which should fit inside the light cap
-some tape to seal the light socket and the tube
-regular concrete

Hey, nice video :) I've build a similar lamp lamp, also with concrete, and I really wished I had that idea to cut the pipe bevore concreting ^^ That was really annoying to get it out of the shape.

Nice project.. 👍 Are you maybe also aware of other concrete mixes that are more fluid so they can be poured? Saw the Dutch on the bag.. , I'm Dutch too 😜

You can always add some extra water to make the mix more fluid. Takes more time to dry but should be no problem for the strenght.

Mervpaine18 Here in the Netherlands you'll find them in every local construction market. In other countries it seems a lot harder to find them unfortunatly.

Love these, tried them myself and they came out great, only problem i had was trying to find a cap like the one you used. I used 110mm drain pipe but all the caps i found went inside the pipe so ruined the smooth effect. Had to use a piece of wood but it was a nightmare trying to clamp it on etc. Where did you get those caps...UK? ???

Hi. I winced at the delivery too. I did some more looking around and found these twsshop.co.uk/shop/underground-drainage/110mm-underground-drainage/110mm-underground-drainage-end-cap/ This place charges 5 quid for delivery, cheapest I have found it. Hope that helps :)

Hi Geert, I've tried this and I've faced some problems. With standard concrete the results looks like a really ugly bricks. With white concrete I've got a "marble" effect without any porosity. I'm really keen to have the porosity effect (i.e. like "holes" in the final product) please advise

  • @kroongj1

Hi Andrzej, nice to hear that you tried to copy the lamps I made! It's hard to adress the problems you faced from a distance without seeing the results but I will give it a try. The first result you describe, "the ugly bricks", sounds like you did not use enough water. More water gives the outside of the concrete a smoother surface. The porosity is always a gamble. The best results i did get was when i did remove some of the stones from the concrete but not alle of them! Also important is the amount of 'tapping' after you poured the concrete. This 'tapping' on the side of the mold makes the air pockets rise to te surface. Try one without 'tapping' and with regular concrete with more water. I hope this helps! Good luck!

So I am in the process of making two of these lamps and have everything ready. But now that I have cut the plastic tube it doesn't hold it self in a nice circle anymore, so as is I wouldn't get a nice clean cylindrical lamp... I have it holding in a vice now to see if I can get it to spring back. But if that doesn't work have you got any suggestions? How did you cut it and have the tube maintain its shape? I used a saw as this is what I have...

  • @kroongj1

I think my tube is made of thicker material. So it holds shape by itself.

  • @kroongj1

Maybe you can try to put the tube back together with tape. Use thin tape on the inside so that it does not give an impression in the concrete. After curing you can then cut it loose with a knife.
