Duplicate your citrus trees with this easy air layering method. Be patient as most citrus trees can take 6-8 months to develop roots. If you like the video or have any questions, leave a comment and I will try to answer as many as I can. Thanks for watching.

Hola Maestro ! Gracias
I live on my farm in Texas and I am trying the cloning technique on an old mulberry tree that I played under a a child. It only has one little sticker branch still living. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Hello! I love your videos, I learned a lot thanks to you! That year I grafted cherries, apples, pears, plums, peaches, apricots, and most of them started, so this year I was even able to try plums) I want to have more pears in my garden, but I don't have a pear rootstock. Can you tell me if the rootstock of an apple tree is suitable for grafting pears on it? Thank you for your efforts!)
Excellent video! Thank you very much.

I will try this on my haskap berries this spring. I'll also try to bend some of the branches on top of the mulch and place a stone on top. They seemed very eager to spread. Lovely berry, haskap. It'll be all the rage soon. Great content Sir! Much appreciated.

Excuse me Mr., much respect to the Awesome work You do. I have a question, would an air Layering procedure on a Lemon tree be done successfully during November in a Mediterranean type climate?
Interesant! Multumesc mult!

Can we do this in any season or is there a season this is the most effective in? Also, I have a tree that I think is on it's way out and looks like it is dying, can I try to clone it before it dies?
Is it good to use egg shells and coffee grounds for draining purposes when planting air layered citrus and breadfruit branches? Thanks
Thanks for a great video! Does this method of growing roots work on larger main branches as well?
@JSacadura
The larger the branch the older it is and more difficult will be for it to develop roots. This happens because the undifferentiated cells that turn into roots are less and less, in proportion to the older tissues, as the branch gets older. However, with the right conditions, its possible in some fruit types - I have done it in 4-5 years old, larger diameter branches, but it takes much longer and requires the use of rooting hormones. Nevertheless, its best to use younger branches, 1-2 years old, whenever possible.

Not many. Any young branch of the right diameter will do. Avoid branches that are too thin, unless you support them during the air layer, or they might break with the wind (the air layer is a weak point). Its also best to choose a well positioned branch, easy to air layer and that doesn't affect the mother tree's shape when removed. One of the options is air layering a watersprout since these are young, vigorous, vertical growing branches that are usually removed anyway, so they don't compete with the fruit bearing branches.
Do you think using a rooting hormone would make roots form faster or more reliably?

How well do citrus grow on their own roots instead of a grafted rootstock? Im curious because all of mine are grafted. Im new to growing citrus.
@JSacadura
It really depends on the varieties and the zone. In my area, Lemon trees, particularly the older varieties, are often grown in their own roots. The trees take more time to grow and start producing but they live longer. The older growers often say that some citrus taste better when grown on their own roots, without the rootstock interference. The trees also tend to be healthier and bigger (there is always some degree of incompatibility when grafting a variety to a rootstock). However, a grafted tree will be more manageable (less pruning required to maintain it a certain size). In colder areas it's often a good idea to graft them in rootstocks that are a bit more resistant to cold, etc. There are advantages and disadvantages in both approaches. Commercially, grafted trees are the way to go. To the enthusiast, some varieties grown on their own roots can be interesting. Thanks for the comment.

It definitely depends on the zone. Rootstocks survive in certain cold better than others. And if the root doesnt survive, the tree wont, but grafts with hardy rootstock tend to survive a zone colder than their native roots do. If your air layered trees arent surviving beside the mother plant, then the mother is grafted to hardy woodstock, and you shouldnt air layer, but rather graft to hardy woodstock for your zone.

I like watching you use a Swiss Army knife to do your work. I wonder though, how often do you sharpen it? It must be a weekly practice.
@JSacadura
Not at all. It keeps sharp enough on regular use. Last sharpening was a couple of months ago. It only needs more frequent sharpening if you are doing many grafts a day (usually during spring).

And youre an amazing craftsman, who knows what tools work best, and you skillfully use them well. Youre doing a good service providing us your skill and knowledge. Good show my brother.
Jsacadura do you know how to air layer a mango tree?
How often do you have to water your substrate?
@JSacadura
In most cases you don't need to water the air layering medium. The plastic film maintains all the moisture that is needed to start the root development. If you are air layering in the summer or the air layers are more than 3 months old you can open the container and water lightly. It should only be required once, as I did in the lemon tree example. In the fig example no watering was needed.
Can ai yose composot only
@JSacadura

Roots may not develop well if you use only compost, even if it's fully cured. It's usually better to use a light soil mix.
What abput roses? Apple trees?
@JSacadura
You can propagate roses using the same technique. You can also do it with apples but I prefer to graft a good eating variety to a robust rootstock (you can buy one or grow one from seeds), as this tree will grow much better (the good eating varieties don't grow very well on their own roots).
Bom dia Gosto muito dos seus vídeos! Estaria interessado em trocar garfos? Obrigado
@JSacadura

@JSacadura
