Hi Josh .Greetings from across the pond. I'm knocking on 80 yrs. I never stop learning. Your videos inspire me to keep going. Just love this tune, and thank you for sharing it. May take me a few weeks but I'll get there!

Thanks so much, John! My pleasure.
Thanx for this, am loving and learning it .
Great stuff...love the smile at the end👍👏
Sweet!! Love this tune. Thanks for posting this! I’m fretless, but it looks doable. Thanks also for the tab. Subbing!
That's so nice I had to listen about 20-30 times. I think I'll try the tab and get that old banjer out of the closet again. thank you . Real nice !

Thank you, Henry! And yes, it is a gorgeous tune.
The 4th string on your banjo is nice and growly. 👍
👍 Easy but that reveal my lack of technique at the level of the thumb which is determining to play the clawhammer well! 😭 Good piece to progress! Thanks Josh.
I made a comment about the tuning but I see you have it listed in your other video for this song. so never mind.
Brevity is the soul of wit. And other things.
I can't download the tab, is it broken?
You are awesome do you teach at any of the Folk Schools? We live by John C Campbell in Brasstown NC. Great music here. I play Hammer Dulcimer but am learning Claw Hammer from you!
So I was playing guitar along with your banjo, and was happy just using C, F, and G chords, but I see in your tab an Am chord that I could not make fit anywhere. Can you help me understand?

Sure - so remember first of all that you can harmonize a melody any way you want, so there will always be multiple possible progressions that sound good. I imagine you are wanting to play an F where the Am is listed - that's perfectly fine (generally, if two chords share two notes, as those two chords do (the A and the C), then they make for easy substitutions). The ultimate goal is to play what you like, after all! :) But as an exercise, you might just try playing an A minor chord every time you were playing the F - doing this sort of thing will help expand your sense of harmonic possibilities, and develop your ear.

@@fingerstylebanjolessons Thanks for quick reply. And the free lesson. What you say makes sense. I'll mess around with it some more.

I'm learning to play this song but forgive me, do you discuss anywhere how to tune the banjo (for this song). Is it C modal tuning.
Are you using your index finger to strike the notes or do the strum I can’t quite tell

He does not use his index finger. It's just a quirk of his that it sticks out

And that is just a matter of personal preference. Many play with the middle finger. Some people play only with the index finger. Some play the first string with the middle finger, and the other strings with the index finger.
gotta get the tune in my head a few times to get it right, thanks.
I wonder if my banjo neck is too thin for frailing - you seem to have more width. Mine is just over an inch at the nut. It's a typical 60's Gretsch. Then again maybe I'm still a sloppy beginner.

I began on a thin-neck banjo and had trouble doing lots of things, especially pulloffs on the 1st string - the string would roll over the edge. I bought a Pisgah w/ maybe a 1 ¼ wide nut and suddenly I could play those things! I think neck width is a huge issue. Try to get another banjo and keep frailing!
I think the Bonaparte name for this one is some kind of euphemism or compromise. I have heard that the real name for that tune was something like Sherman's Starvation March to the Sea and then others started calling it Lee Crossing the Potomac and finally they settled on removing it from an American context altogether. Regardless, a great tune and well played!
V.G. Is that the "Brainjo?"
