GREAT EXPLANATION /ADVICE I have been playing B-jo for almost 75 years. Currently, I play mostly a clawhammier-ish 'melodic' note-for-note', highly ornamented celtic type music. I almost exclusively use DOUBLE-C (Capo @+2 = for A or D ... aDADE). Double-C HAS to be the MOST versatile tuning overall .... especially if one plays a lot of 'up the neck' chordal forms, and with the SECOND STRING as the LEAD string .... as wasteful finger stretch in making chords is minimized. For the past ~25 years, I play mostly from the 5th or 7th positions/fret ...'on up', rarely fretting below the 5th or 7th fret ... and all the (unfretted/'opem') 4 strings below the 5th/7th fret will simply resonate automatically in perfect 'dynamic' harmony for that all-important celtic 'full house sound'.
I have been (melodic - 'blitzing' @ ~120 bpm) 'clawhammering' of celtic music for well over 70 years; and I'm still 'learning', especially the all-important INSTINCTIVE playing. For me, 1/2 to 'sometimes' ~1 hours ~per day is sufficient, so that that I maintain my instinctive MUSCLE MEMORY. Any amount over that amount results in accumulated 'bursitis'. FWIW - a severely worn-through fingernail takes about 4+ months to fully 'regrow'; so, I now use a soft brass, 4 winged, PRO-PIK on my strike finger, and regularly 'sand down' the built-up finger tip callouses on my 'up-the-neck' hand. Dont over-do; all things in moderation !!!!
When I play my Tubaphone banjo I've got a big smile on my face & on my heart.
I have so much appreciation for this post thank you 😊
You’re most welcome!
I can't find the tab in the vault? Is it somewhere else on the site (premium member)
You should find it there now. :)
@@ClawhammerBanjo Awesome! Thank you and thank you for the fantastic KZread channel and tutorial site.
Thanks so much, Jason - very much appreciated.
Really nice!
I wish I could sing like that!! 🤗
We learn in sleep as well. So I’m sure the long term is better.
I’m curious does your Brainjo have an app or just a computer login.
Play that like ten times slower and miss some strings and we are equals.
I’m struggling to understand the 7th and 8th measure plucking. There are no indications that you use your thumb on the tab, nor use a hammer on. How do you play those measures? Particularly in the 8th measure the 5 of the D string.
Nice stuff
Love this one! I first heard it in the 70's on a "Highwoods Stringband" Album.
Same here!
Love it!
Thanks!!
Well done.
Thanks so much.
Awesome guys 👏👏👏👏
Thank you!
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh Yes. Sweet. .......... Lovely. ........... Respect. STP
Thanks, STP!
Great job!
Thanks!
Dude! You are awesome!!!
Outstanding 🎉
I increased my clawhammer-ish speed by employing controlled arpeggioed triplets/doublets, etc. (~2-3X 'faster'); various types of pull offs; plus, abandoning the bumpity strum (too mechanically TIME consuming) and substituting with strictly 'melodic' technique. But, I prefer celtic (usually in A or D; thus, using the 'faster' 'double C tuning for less finger 'stretch') music which is played 'mostly' above the 5th position (fret) for economy of left hand movement. .... all accumulated over the past 70 years; and STILL learning, I now play 3 finger and 'tenor banjo' sounds etc., just as fast with a melodic clawhammer-ish technique (actually a downpicking two-finger technique) ... that includes ALL 'voices' - 1. lead, 2. second fiddle and 3. base ... imitating BANDS ... simultaneously and across all 5 strings for that celtic 'full house sound effect' at up to 120+ bpm. (let your EAR be the controlling factor). In my personal "above the 5th position (5th fret) technique", the SECOND string becomes the typical LEAD string!!!! Indeed, learning 'patterns' - so they become **'instinctive'** is 'key' for 'ear - hand' coordination across THE CHORD patterns; and then, varying 'the 3 voices' of the tune.
I know this is an old video, but maybe the comments are still being read. I'm having trouble with the "knocking" part. Keeping my had relaxed, it just goes "thump" or sometimes my nails just scratch the drump head. I can't seem to get much noise from the string when my finger actually hits the string. Which is another problem, I can't seem to hit a specific string with the knocking motion.
Such a beautiful song. Thank you.
When stricking one string, how do you keep the thumb from sounding the 5th string? I’m not plucking down on it but I still touch it and it rings (quietly) but when playing faster you can definitely hear it. Should the thumb not really touch the 5th string when playing single notes?
Do you guys have any songs on spotify? All of these songs yall show are great! I'd love to have them as part of my listen.
As it turns out, we’re working on an album of songs now - planning to get them out later this summer. Thanks!
@@ClawhammerBanjo Awesome! I would especially love Tom Dooley and Sing Song Kitty. Those are just so fun to listen to!
Wow you sound great in this one
Damn I was hoping it would be the doc Watson version
Fiddle player here , if you ever come to Ashville NC please hit me up for a porch session.
Any chance you still have the tabs for this? Would love to learn!
Ive been learning this for a few days now and I cant for the life of me understand the way youre strumming/brushing, are you somehow hitting the drum without sounding the strings? I dont know AHH i love your version of this song and even though i learnt your tab mine just doesnt sound the way its supposed to haha
Kinda looks like the banjo equivalent of slap bass
When clicking the button on the webpage to get the tab I get a 404 :(
Im Russian and your cover took my breath away. It's more than amazing. Wish i had a banjo and could play like that👍
"A man with a voice like that can't be all bad"
This one is a collector's edition! 👍💙
so many versions--wonder what this tune was in the British Isles before coming to Appalachia? This version sounds a lot like Maybelle and Sara--Carter Family.

Can you please ad the tuning that you're in for the songs
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh Yes. Love It. STP
Great harmonies!
You guys are awesome
Thank you, Sean!
Best song ever ... gets better the older you get ❤
Indeed!
Adore this. Just wondering where the tab is?
Thanks! There’s a tab for this in The Vault tab library inside the course.
I understand and agree with the principle being espoused here but, while probably more true in sports than music, I think there are limits to this. As a teen I played tennis and my most accessible partner was my next door neighbor who was a natural athlete at easily 10x what I could ever be. One summer he had a winning string of (IIRC) 16 straight 6-0 sets against me (or I had a string of losing sets: yin / yang). By comparison, my older sister and I were reasonably evenly matched and could carry on lengthy volleys. It's rather hard to see that my tennis playing improved more (if at all) by playing my neighbor when our skills were at such disparate levels. All of that said, I certainly wish I knew other musicians to play with, regardless of their skill level. Right now that's a complete gap in my overall musical experience.
Sweet!! Love this tune. Thanks for posting this! I’m fretless, but it looks doable. Thanks also for the tab. Subbing!
Amazing banjos: six from east, two panjos from west, five banjos from south and one from north. Inside these banjos was sound. They gathered to play together a tune long forgotten but still in memories somehow.
Love this version!
