Eastern Iceland's highlights | Best sights and places

This is our journey in Eastern Iceland. A really beautiful, yet so underrated part of Iceland. From majestic mountains to glacier lagoons and from amazing waterfalls to breathtaking canyons. This part of Iceland has them all!
Places we visited in East Iceland in 4 days:
- Skaftafell - a very popular mountain area with a unique waterfall (Svartifoss) and a breathtaking view over Skaftafellsjökull glacier
- Fjallsárlón - a glacier lagoon where you can see many glacier chunks up close or even hold one!
- Jökulsárlón - a massive glacier lagoon with crystal clear water where you can even spot seals!
- Borgarfjörður - a birds nature reserve in the north-eastern corner of Iceland, one of the best places to puffins from up close
- Seyðisfjörður - one of the prettiest town in the eastern fjords region, with many hiking trails around
- Fardagafoss - a picturesque waterfall a stone's throw away from the city of Egilsstaðir
- Hengifoss - one of the tallest and, in our opinion, the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland
- Kárahnjúkar - a massive and super impressive dam, housing the largest hydroelectric power plant in Iceland
- Stuðlagil - an otherworldly canyon full of imposing basalt columns and turquoise water, one of our personal favourites!
Hopefully this could inspire you to visit this wonderful part of Iceland. For more detailed and complete report (incl. tips) of our journey, visit our travel blog 😀 (onebackpackeach.com)

    HEY, loved your videos, what month did u visit iceland and what time specifically did u go to see the puffins? I heard that its better to spot them at evening time but I am not sure what time you both ended up visiting there? please advise, thanks

    Hey2.. thanks for watching! 😁😁 we visited lceland from late june to early july.. for the puffins, they will be there during the summer, we saw plenty at two spots in late june and early july.. For the two spots we visited (borgarfjordur in northeast and latrabjarg in westfjords), we went in the afternoon and they were just there 😀😀 Maybe early morning would be better to see some of them flying out to catch fish, but i guess plenty would be around the whole day 😁

    Hello there 👋 Thanks for the kind words! And indeed Iceland is really beautiful, you have to go one day!! 😁😁 For the eastern part of the country we spent about 3-4 days, and we had a day of terrible weather 🙈.. in total we spent 3 weeks in the whole of Iceland, and that's still not enough, we still missed the central highlands part.. we need to come back one day for that 😀😀

    I love the humour with pieces of melted glacier. Very entertaining, good music; well done you two. There are parts of NZ that are much like parts of Europe. Fiordland is much like Northern Norway. The Southern Alps and Tongariro National Park are a bit like parts of Iceland. Thanks for your videos. Happy travels !

    Hey, great video. We are going on June (can't wait). Quick question: Can you hike Skaftafell Jokull to Fjarsarllon to Jokulsarlon in one day? Or can we drive to all three? I know we can drive toJokullsarlon. We have a 3yr old. Do you think it is fine to do it?

  • @Onebackpackeach

    @Onebackpackeach

    2 ай бұрын

    Thanks! You can drive to all three in one day. Fjallsarlon and jokulsarlon can be reached easily, while in skaftafell you can do a short hike to the svartifoss or to the nice view point in a couple of hours, and the hike is quite easy, even with a small kid 😀

    Hello , Thx for your video . Planning for our trip and watching your video. I have question about the last part of your video , been 3 yrs hope you still remember. You were in the Studlagil canyon, how did you get down close to water surface ? I saw some videos people walked up high then climbed down next to slippery rocks with running water next to them, too scary, we don’t want to do that Thanks

  • @Onebackpackeach

    @Onebackpackeach

    Hey there. We did have to climb down some path, but nothing too extreme actually. You have to access it from the east side from a small farm called klaustursel, that way you can actually go down to the riverside maps.app.goo.gl/kH6ykqGMx17kKANcA Don't go to the main access parking, because then you can only see the canyon from above (but that was 3 years ago so I don't know for sure if anything changes 😬) Anyway good luck with the trip and wish you a great time there! 😀

    nice video! I am going there in July 2021 and want to make it down to the bottom of Stuðlagil Canyon where you finished the video. You can get by parking at that farm? I have read that there is two ways to get there, want to make sure I pick the right one! Thanks.

    Thank you for visiting our channel and watching our video 😀 When we were there, we parked at the farm called Klaustursel. In this link you can find tge location of Klaustursel farm (onebackpackeach.com/best-sights-and-places-in-east-iceland/) -> go to the section of studlagil canyon (number 9), and click the word Klaustursel farm, it is linked with the map 😀 From klaustursel farm, the walk is really easy 😀😀 When you reach the bottom, just be careful cz the rocks might be slippery

    That was a nice video of east Iceland and I hope you liked it there. People always go really fast in the east and miss out on some amazing sense and also some really good museums… and the east side of Iceland is the only place that you can find Reindeer.

    Hi, thanks for watching 😀 we did not rent bikes actually, so we could not really help you on this matter.. but we did see some people traveling on bikes through the ring road (maybe own bikes?) so we're sure that's possible and safe 😃😃 we'd recommend to get a really good bike with good tyres since many roads are unpaved with many gravels which can easily puncture your bike's tyres 😐
