I've noticed that squirrels often use the tail warnings when another squirrel is encroaching on their territory. The 'moan' seems to be a very serious danger!/predator warning, because I've noticed squirrels freeze in the trees when they hear the moan, & it takes them a long time to relax again & resume normal activity. When cats pass by in my neighbourhood, squirrels will use the 'moan'.

I had a squirrel sitting right on my apartment windowsill, making the "quaaa" noise over and over, no "kuk." I didn't know what it was doing and was worried it might be sick. I'm glad it wasn't hurt or anything; it just must have seen a hawk or something.

Repeated fast Kuks mean "I see danger". (or "I feel I am in danger") Two Kuks followed by a Qauaa means "I saw danger but don't see it right now" or "I am still nervous" (To warn other squirrels to watch for the danger) Moans mean "Danger in the air" (notice they crouch low to a branch near the trunk and stay still). They use a lower moan to call babies, or to call their mom. The moms make a purring noise (like a cat) to comfort their babies in the nest. They babies purr when they are groomed by their mom. And they growl (just like a dog) and spit at other squirrels that come too close to food they have claimed.

Squirrels do not have thoughts or minds, and they do not have a formed language. They've been studied by biologists and the barks usually serve to protect themselves (the other animal stops bothering them) and the chirps are loud during mating season. If you believe a guy in a KZread comment fully understands animals that don't even understand themselves you are an adult child.

@GUNS N RODENTS during the pandemic I have become creative with our entertainment. I have a window air conditioner that I sit nuts out on so that the squirrels will come up and get them and our cats will have window entertainment. Then we have entertainment watching the cats lol. we had a mama squirrel that would grunt or growl when the other squirrels would come to close to the food. The reason why I know she was a mama squirrel is because we could tell she was feeding babies LOL. She end up getting hit by a car right after she introduced her babies to us. One of the neighborhood Stray Cats sat next to her right after she got hit. She had that much character that even the Stray Cats mourn her. I miss her grunts and running off the others lol.

My squirrels don't run up the nearest tree when they feel a threat. Instead they jump onto me, most of the time avoiding other larger squirrels. They've jumped into my house to escape other squirrels knowing that I'm less of a threat. These animals are way more intelligent than they need to be.

Come on Backyard behaviorist ! Make more videos, it's been six years I know you got more of these. My partner and I encountered a squirrel at the arboretum today and she was moaning but we had no idea what it meant, we thought she was hurt, but after watching your video we've realized it was because of the two huge hawks that flew over at the exact time we first heard the moan. So good to know 🙂👍🐿🦅

So from my understanding the squirrel was crying and flagging her tail because she saw a potential threat on the ground? And is this is the closest answer I was able to find for the squirrel it’s very loud in my backyard right now 🙏 thank you 😊.

Yes. If you get both the k uk and the tail, it's a big threat. Check the area for coyote or wolf.

Horrible audio. The commentary is barely intelligible and the squirrel sounds are almost completely masked by traffic noises. Get a parabolic dish and a decent microphone.

I had a gutsy black squirrel (gray squirrel genetics mess up) above me in a tree doing the barks and tail flaps while looking down at me...it was smart to warn others but shouldn't have been that close...later that day it tasted delicious. Lolol.
