Can I ask you a question? How important is it to have a tree in front on the nest, and how far/close is best?

I think the main thing is to position your house at the edge of an open field. My birdhouse is about 10-15 feet from the nearest tree. Normally it faces away from the trees. This has not been a problem, however, I would keep the grass mowed for 50 ft. or so near fledging time. The babies land on the grass and then make it to the trees in a couple of minutes. My bird house is on a pole which can be rotated. I have turned it toward the trees at fledging time---and that works too, however you don't get a chance to see the babies. Have fun!

Nels Anderson Thank you for your reply. No lie, my real question was whether or not I could rotate my birdhouse once it was established, but I didn't want to sound like an idiot, lol. But you said it all, so rotating the pole doesn't affect the nest?

Hi Nels. When’s the best time to put up the camera before or after they’ve chosen the nest box? If I do it before could it possible keep them form using the box. They have been going in and out but haven’t started building a nest when should I do it?

I leave the camera in the bluebird house all year. It is the female's job to accept the site so she will spend time investigation the camera. In my experience she never really likes it but in the end builds her nest anyway. I had a female bluebird in the box Feb. 12 which is very early. I would go ahead and install the camera.

@@nancyanderson9312 The cam I ordered just came last week but they have been going in and out of the box everyday, mostly the female. I don’t want to scare them off last year I didn’t get any bluebirds going into the box. I have a male and female they both are fluttering their wings and chattering when near each other and when at the mealworm feeder. What does this mean? Maybe I should just wait until next season? I’m in CA these are Western Bluebirds. Thanks for your advice.

Adorable!!! I have a nesting box with these guys few years in a row. Today, I did t know they were back and I decided to inspect the box before they return and I scared the female really badly. I had no clue she was in there, they must have JUST arrived from migration. Do you think I scared her off for good???

Very unlikely. Once they settle on a house it is hard to change their minds. I am streaming live from a bb house on facebook if you would like to check it out. facebook.com/nels.anderson

There are several ideas for constructing birdhouses: Allow enough time. Use ready made boat outlines. (I learned about these and more from Aviary magic method website )

I have a question....if you touch the nest or make a noise will they perk up?...... the baby blues seem to be very slow and weak @ day 5 ....when on day 2 they would perk up when I made a little noise thinking it was there mom .....the nest seems clean and the mom and dad are still visiting.....I just would like to know if this is normal

  • @TheRanchero72

My guess is that they are fine. Somethings that happen may seem a little strange or wrong but mom and dad still feeding is a very positive sign.
