How the Female Bluebird Builds Her Nest

Фильм және анимация

If you are curious about how bluebirds build such nice, compact well designed nests, you might be interested in this video. The female builds the nest. The role of the male has been described as "quality control" inspector. On his occasional visits to the nest, he will look around and usually pick one piece of building material which he removes. This happens several times in this video.

Interesting but she still has a long way to go to finish! Love how the male has to get in there and take out "inappropriate" materials. LOL

Wow, thanks for sharing! I have Bluebirds attempting a second nest this summer 2016, they abandoned their first 5 eggs :( Now they laid another 4 eggs mid June and I think I saw 3 live babies today, 3 days old. I'm worried about fire works disturbing them on 4th July.... The female is very skittish. I LOVE Bluebirds!

How awesome! I have a pair of bluebirds and actually a lot of other wild birds that I feed and I was contemplating buying a nesting box but I get so many hawks in my backyard that I chase away almost daily as it is. I would hate to put the baby chicks in jeopardy. But thanks for such a beautiful video. I loved seeing the process.

Bluebirds will have several broods each season. Should the nest be cleaned out between broods? Thanks

It is considered good practice to remove the old nest. A good time to clean the box again. I am streaming live from our bluebird nest at: facebook.com/nels.anderson

What is she doing when she flaps her wings inside the nest? Trying to fluff up the materials she's using???

Well around here in NC they use pine needles for 90% of the nest. The rest is grass and finally they line the nest with fine soft grass. Pretty amazing.

What torture for the bird. I feel sorry for it. So cramped and dark and so narrow. It looks like the bird is in prison. Why are these birdhouses made so narrow and cramped???
