The PBF gas mask was designed in the Soviet Union for soldiers needing a light-weight gas mask or to be issued to civilians for protection against radioactive fallout. It was introduced in the 1980s in the Soviet and Warsaw pact armed forces1. According to some sources, the PBF was called the ‘gorilla’, ‘monkey’, and ‘hamster’ mask by Soviet troops1. I hope that helps! According to Bing!!!!!

I'd thought they were introduced in the '80s too, around 1982, but some sources online state late 1970s, which would tally with the haversack/carrier being dated 1977.

This was the model of Respirator the Grenzers were issued with.

I've been on the lookout for more original photos of them in use/the smaller haversack being carried. Of course you don't often see Grenzers with them on their day to day duties.

Which mask is better or which is more modern, the Soviet PMG or PBF gas mask?

These masks look like the movie baddys from the film bad taste by Peter Jackson
