Hi GG, Your KZread content is amazing! Thank you for sharing your knowledge to help all of us!! I have an interview loop coming up in 2 days. For writing sample, could I use an example of innovation from grad school almost 20 years ago. It is the most innovative idea compared to any of the other things I have done in professional life so far and we might very well see my invention as product in market in the near future. Or should the example be from professional life?

Honestly if it was 20yrs ago- I wouldn't. There might be a concern about why you had to go back 20yrs to find an example. Officially the writing sample purpose is primarily for reviewing your writing abilities not your behavioural competency BUT you can't be sure that someone wouldn't raise a red flag on you having to go back 20yrs and your Bar Raiser not shut it down.

I am writing my written statement this week and wanted to ask if you think it's a good idea to use the same example that I used during my first round of interviews? It's a great example but if the first two interviewers already heard it, should I use a different example for for the writing sample or do different people evaluate the writing sample? Great question Mindy- someone asked me exactly the same question near the end of the March 10th free coaching session. So suggest you check that out. It's about 10mins from the end asked by Pat Patrick. The short answer is, it should be ok. BUT I'm a little concerned that you've already used it twice. If I was your Bar Raiser I'd spot that immediately. The purposes of the writing sample is to check you can write, rather than necessarily test an LP. So even though it's a brilliant LP example- you've already cashed that cheque twice. Trying to cash is another time isn't going to make it count a third time but repeating the exact same example 3 times could hurt you. Hope that helps. 🧙‍♀️

Absolutely not!! It makes no sense at all. You’re being asked to talk about a story of your past. It’s not a business review or a product proposal. The FAQs function to ensure you don’t miss any critical angles of a project. It literally makes no sense for a behavioural question.

Hi GG, I‘m preparing my final loop and received a written exercise. As we know from many contributions in KZread or the internet, Q1 is about how I made an important decision incl LP “bias for action”. I should choose an example from the last 12 months. The Q2 is about innovation, but no explicit mentioning the “ past 12 months” constraint. I want to choose an example for the Q2, but it’s a project 5 years ago. Would this “old” example be a no-go? I had some questions regarding the written exercise if you could please share some advice? - should you be breaking up the two pages with sub-headings to make it more presentable? or should you leave it to the reader to understand the flow between situation - task - action etc? - if you can manage to use less than two pages, does that reflect well towards being concise or adversely as not being deep enough? - is it a no to using diagrams / tables to articulate a point? Many thanks in advance :-)

Hi Karan- glad you like it. Answers below. -should you be breaking up the two pages with sub-headings to make it more presentable? or should you leave it to the reader to understand the flow between situation. [GG's response. It's got to be readable, so as you would with any document, you need to make good use of headers and paragraphs] - if you can manage to use less than two pages, does that reflect well towards being concise or adversely as not being deep enough? [GG's response. It's up to 2 pages- so if you can write a good concise doc that is super clear and gives all the relevant detail pertaining to the question, then that's fine. ] - is it a no to using diagrams / tables to articulate a point? [GGs response. That is a no. In an Amazon doc you would not have diagrams and tables in the main body. Those are relegated to appendix. So you need to show you can tell the story clearly in text as you would have to in a real doc review] Hope that helps

Hi GG. Thank you so much for this helpful video. A quick question: for the innovation question, how innovative are we talking about? What if someone writes about something they have done but it wasn’t an invention or something. It was something done for the first time in the company but it was already out there… do you think they care how innovative the content is? Or they just care about the writing style?

Great videos! I've read on blogs that Amazon provides every interview candidate the same 2 prompts as options for the writing sample. So it is safe to assume that these exact questions won't be asked during the phone or panel interviews? Also, should we expect to further elaborate or discuss our writing sample during the panel interviews?

Hi Claire- you may get asked the same question as not all interviewers will see your written sample. If that happens just tell them you used that question for your writing sample. They'll most likely then ask you a different one. No you won't discuss your writing sample. Hope that helps.

Can I use a case that I have already presented in previous interviews? If I am asked about the same LP in the loop, can I use the same example from the writing test?

Hi GG, Thanks a lot for your amazing videos. These have been super helpful. I went through the entire playlist of Start here for amazon interview preparation, and in my opinion it is the most comprehensive and detailed set of videos i have ever come across. I have my loop interview coming up in 4 days for L5 role Product Operations role. I have below 2 questions and need insights on how to approach these. 1. I was initially told that i will have writing exercise as part of interview, later same day i received email from my recruiter requesting me to share my previous work samples. I may not be able to share my previous work with them. Could you please advise what should i do, or if its a good idea to share my masters course case studies? 2. I do have an interview round with open ended problem question. Could you advise what i could expect, perhaps example of what expectations are? Any insights from peers who have experienced these in past will be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    1) explain to the recruiter that you can’t share it and why and ask for an alternative 2) I’m afraid I don’t have expertise in each of the thousands of functional roles and how they test for functional skills.

Hi- no to both. Your Amazon reader doesn't need you to highlight important words. They're smart enough to spot themselves. The guidance you receive on the writing exercise, if I recall correctly, says no bullet points. Even if you number them, they're still bullet points. Good luck 🧙‍♀️

I'd recommend not to. If your innovation doesn't actually drive improvements in metrics than it's not really of value. If you don't have that data yet then you' re only providing half of the evidence they want. I strongly recommend using examples where you can show you delivered measurable improvements. Hope that helps.

Yes all your notes, from all rounds are visible to anyone who is interviewing you. What you note is a common problem, with people using their strongest examples in early rounds. To many repeats cause concern in the Panel, over a lack of breadth of strong examples, i.e you may not be a consistently strong performer. One repeat at Panel will be OK, two may be OK if you are early on in your career- but much more than that and as a BR I’d be flagging it as a concern. If you’re going to repeat between early rounds and Panel do not use it for exactly the same LP. I say this because that is literally a wasted question- you had already provided this exact data and it is visible to the Panel.

Prepping for my upcoming Loop interview and going through your playlists for motivation! I understand we're not supposed to repeat examples. But in your experience, have interviewers asked more details about the content of a candidate's writing exercise?
