Easiest Ever Salt Dough Recipe (3 Ingredients!) | Salt Dough Christmas Ornaments

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Get this easy salt dough recipe (only 3 ingredients!) and learn how to make these adorable salt dough Christmas ornaments with glitter, stamps, felt and more! This is the perfect Christmas craft for the whole family. My salt dough ornament recipe is super simple!
I used Dollar Tree cookie cutters for this tutorial, but you can use any shapes you have on hand or even create 3D shapes as I did for my Halloween pumpkin stems.
Printable recipe: www.firstdayofhome.com/salt-d...
*************************
Recipe:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup salt
3/4 cup warm water
Mix all ingredients well and roll out dough to cut shapes.
You can bake these ornaments in the oven for 1.5 to 2 hours at 250˚F or let them air dry for a no-bake option. Air drying usually takes 4-7 days depending on the thickness of your ornament.

    Many years ago my home demonstration taught a group to make this. I made a fruit tree. I didn’t have a mold or cookie cutter. She said talk to the dough as you mold with hands. We melted crayons in soup cans and dipped the fruit in the melted crayons. For my peach i used 2 colors and carefully dipped to make a pink peachy color after i made the peach shape.

Can you please tell me what to do if my dough is too sticky, l use bake paper and l cant take iz off because its too sticky, and if l left them on baking paper it had wavy texture and after baking and standing at the air for days its still like "raw" inside. Its not hard enough from inside, l can feel that. Can you please tell me what to do to make a lot of already made dough usable. Thanks.

    Hi Ivana. If the dough is too sticky, try adding more flour. In different locations, sometimes humidity (or lack of humidity) can make the dough stickier or drier. Usually adding more flour helps with stickiness.

    Yes, you can use food coloring in the dough before baking. I wouldn’t try to paint them after baking with food coloring since it’s too concentrated. Just use any glue or Mod Podge to add glitter afterwards. Have fun!

    If you don’t plan to keep these for a long time, you could use royal icing. However, I would not use a sugar based ingredient and store these afterwards. Puff paint might be a good alternative and could look like icing.

    Thanks, Crissie! Yes, you could definitely make them thinner. I did some stars for a Christmas card holder and made them daintier. The drying time will be a little shorter if they are thinner too.

  • @FirstDayofHome

    @FirstDayofHome

    There shouldn’t be a difference, but I always opt to bake them just to speed up the process. I suppose there’s a risk they might brown a little if you bake them too long or too high a temp.

    @FirstDayofHome

    You can bake these ornaments in the oven for 1.5 to 2 hours at 250˚F or let them air dry for a no-bake option. Air drying usually takes 4-7 days depending on the thickness of your ornament. See the description of this video for all the info. Thanks!😊

    You should be fine using tempera paint. I like to use Mod Podge to seal the ornaments. You can use a matte, gloss, or sparkle formula depending on the look you want.

    Yes, they should harden either in the oven or by air over several days. You may need to add less water, or try adding a bit more flour if the dough if very sticky.

    That’s a great question. I haven’t tried it personally yet, but I do plan to do that with some Christmas scents. You can try adding a few drops to the mixture as you’re blending it, or you can just add a few drops after drying the ornaments. Friends have done it both ways with plaster, so I think it would work well with salt dough too. Have fun!

    I’m not familiar with a baati cooker, but with an oven you would bake them at a very low heat (250 Fahrenheit) for about 2 hours. It depends on how thick the ornaments are. You always have the option of letting the ornaments air dry, which can take 4-5 days usually.

    Can you put a picture on it

  • @FirstDayofHome

    @FirstDayofHome

    7 ай бұрын

    Yes! After drying, you can apply one layer of Mod Podge, let it dry, then print out a picture the size you want. Apply another layer of Mod Podge on the ornament once the first layer dries and place your printed picture on top. Make sure you have punched a hole in the picture as well to line up with the ornament. Then apply one more thin layer of Mod Podge over the picture. If you want to use an actual photo, I’d just glue it on with hot glue or foam tape but not use Mod Podge.
