Easier way to Mount Flat Screen TV to Wall

Here is an easier way to mount a Flat Screen TV to a wall with Toggler Snaptoggle bolts.
^Tip - If you have a home with metal studs and you hit one while drilling, insert the Toggler with the wings vertical to allow wings to unfold properly. If there are no studs, insert the Toggler with the wings horizontal for better bite.

I've got a centered stud over a mantle that I need to hang a very heavy extendable TV mount on. I can only use two bolts into the studs - do you think using four of these on the mount corners will hold everything up? When also factoring in two studded bolts?

It will hold. Just make sure you use strong lag bolts and drill pilot holes for the lag. Bolts. Pilot hole should be half the diameter of the lag bolt.. no larger. That way stud won’t split. I wouldn’t do It if it’s a metal stud. Make sure you use the 1/4” Togglers rated for 265 lbs in 1/2" sheetrock. if this is a newer tv you’ll be ok. Don’t do it with an older tv like a Plasma that is heavier. I would also use just a flat mount and not an extendable.

I'm trying to mount a 77" LG TV (60lbs) on a full-motion Sanus mount. No studs. I got 10 of these and I'm thinking of using all of them. What do you think? Do you think it will hold? Is there anything else I can do to make it stronger? Thanks for the video!

Al, if I was faced with that problem I would mount a 5/8” thick piece of cabinet grade plywood with the Togglers and then use lag bolts to mount bracket to plywood.

@@PompanoBrownie Thx! I may go that route. My wife doesn't like the idea of plywood but I don't think she realizes that it would be hidden behind the tv....

Do you know for certain whether or not you should orient the toggle bolt behind the wall either vertical or horizontal? Which would hold more weight?

  • @PompanoBrownie

Scott, I’m not an engineer but I always orient the metal toggle wings horizontally to provide more grip if the mount tries to move vertically. Those metal wings bury themselves a bit into the backside of the Sheetrock when properly tightened. More horizontal wing bite will provide more vertical load.

@@PompanoBrownie but in the video at 8:57 you said "I don't want it horizontal, I want it vertical" lol so which way?

@@Alfakennyone In my case I had to run vertical on some because they were going through a metal stud and they wouldn’t fit properly. For the most part I believe these work better if the wings are horizontal because the weight is trying to pull down and that would create better grip and better holding power.

I edited the video to say Horizontal. Thanks for pointing that out. I had vertical on the brain because of a metal stud. Thanks for pointing that out.

@@PompanoBrownie ok cool and do you think 1 stud and a couple of these snap toggles would be good for an articulating mount, 55in tv? I can only reach one stud. I used them before so I would assume that's good, especially with one stud. Edit- no problem, just thought it was confusing haha

Would a power screwdriver be fine as long as I don't get it to where it starts to tighten? Say 90% in then I switch to a hand screwdriver. Either way, thanks for this. I've never been too confident about finding studs but these togglers should be perfect for my needs.

Adrian, I’d use a minimum of quantity 4 of the 1/4” Togglers at the far corners of the wall bracket. If the bracket is more than 16” wide you will be able to catch at least one stud with two lag bolts along with the 4 1/4” Togglers. Yes they do! That’s what makes it an easier install. Obviously you should use lag bolts if you can only hit one stud, and Togglers for the rest. Or… all Togglers if no studs are lined up with bracket holes.
