Wes, it’s like anything in life... Practice makes perfect.. pretty cool your wife likes it.. makes it more fun on the beach if you have company. Get a good umbrella big enough for both of you and use a sand spike to mount it.

BQ, I’m not familiar with Jacksonville Beaches, spend a day scouting when the water is clean. The parking lots with the most surf rod racks is a good indication.

Hey, did you have a video where you explain the purpose of the shock leader? I thought I heard you explain it in one of them.

Jim, Chris Gallagher talks about the purpose of shock leaders in our video on using conventional reels. kzread.info/dash/bejne/o6aoo6qdmaawgJM.html It’s also a good video if you’re ever considering using a conventional to get more distance. Basically the shock leader does exactly that. It absorbs the shock of the cast when using very large Surf Rods. Chris and I both use Surf Rods that are over 13 feet long. Combine that with a 5 ounce sinker and a powerful cast and you have a recipe for disaster if you don’t use a shock leader and only rely on your 20 pound test that’s on your reel. 14lb test If you are using a conventional real. Keep in mind that I am a firm believer in using mono on my reels and so does Chris. We always use 50 pound mono for a shock leader. I prefer the Sufix tritanium plus and so does Chris.Great question Jim!

@@PompanoBrownie so if I am using a spinning 6000 reel and 30lb braid (already on it) do you have suggestions? I am just getting into it and only have a 10ft rod tossing a 4oz sputnik but plan on getting 2x 12 feet rods before the pomps run back thru in April (I am in st Augustine)

Jim, i’m not a big fan of braid for a few reasons. First reason is if you’re not paying attention it’s really easy for braided line to wrap around your eyelet on the end of your Surf Rods without you noticing it. Now you go to heave that 5 ounce sinker and your eyelet on your Surf Rod takes a trip to the ocean. The second reason I don’t like the braid is that it doesn’t give very much, and it isn’t very abrasion resistant. If a shark gets a hold of your line with braid you can pretty much count on your reel getting spoiled off. Third reason I don’t like braid is the cost. Try the sufix Tritanium plus and you will be pleased.
