Even a few minutes prior to the shake, parent Eagle looks to be on high alert. The cam only capture him lifted off the nest right around the time when he detected the initial shake and we can't see what he did but seems to me that he didn't go perch anywhere as he quickly came back down on the nest again. Then mom flew back in to check on her babies, and dad took off for immediate patrol. This is a dedicated pair.

He really made a clever move by taking off and flying in a cercle during the earthquake, just above the nest, before he returned. This was his way to keep the babies safe; he distract their attencion and force them to focus at him up there, in place of getting panicked, move chaotically and fall out of the nest. The best Dad!

I am a retired teacher, but every spring I taught a bird unit. Your comment reminded me of what I told the students about Robins, for example. They build their nest using twigs and mud. Can you imagine getting a tiny bill full of mud and bringing it back to the tree. Then going back to the pond, ditch, wherever they found the mud, again and again and again. We couldn't build a nest like they do with two hands and ten fingers!! I also try to imagine how they START the nest. That first twig, or stick. What keeps It from coming loose? God gives them amazing skills.

True story: the Canadians had to re-introduce the bald eagle to the United States, because humanity is so fucked in the head that American hunters made the eagles practically go extinct, despite the fact they are the USA’s national bird/mascot!

@Phrnch Mdl 1) I said *“practically* go extinct.” Key word is _practically._ Do you understand English very well? That means that they were extremely endangered and were on the verge of extinction! 2) Wherever did you get the idea that hunters only hunt to eat what they kill?? Do you think that the trophy hunters that go to Africa to kill lions (for example) are eating them? LOL. There is an obscene amount of species that hunters kill either just for the fun of it, or to stuff them to display them/mount their heads on their wall, etc. etc. And bald eagles are indeed extremely beautiful birds that make impressive stuffed creatures for the sick fucks that are into that shit!

He knew something was up! He got the chicks to lie low and flat. Their instinct is amazing. Earthquake apart - isn't it funny how beautiful most mammal babies are even when they grow into less photogenic adults, but beautiful birds like these eagles and snow white swans are not very pretty as young babies. I was an ugly duckling. At 66 is it too late to hope for a metamorphosis? Lol

During one of our rare earthquakes, I just happened to be outside with my freeranging flock of chickens. They all got very calm and settled underneath the bushes just right before it happened. In fact all of the wildlife around here was quiet. They sat still while it happened. Got up a few minutes after and went back to normal. They did the same during the big eclipse we had not too many years ago. Just gathered quietly and hunkered down, stayed quiet and still until it passed. One of my roosters, who was sitting with the flock, just put his head down and closed his eyes, as if going to sleep.

HYDRA DYNAMIC. I have watched this nest since 2016. These eagles are highly intelligent and I can say that all of them, they know in advance for the natural disaster ( I think most animals do ) watching birds of prey are a joyful, but we have to accept their behaviour and their way of lives. I have watched a countless nest, but this one is my most favourite because of time zones.

We should do our best, each in little ways, as to not to contribute to THE Earths demise....but, well all things do die. So with that, God bless us all good people, who try their best to get along, and give wild life flora n fauna, bird, mammal, reptile and all of our water creatures, a bit of help....and more importantly, room to live and prosper. For me, the terrifying part of our bigger earth quakes is the sound. Loma Prieta sounded like a freight train. You can usually hear them a couple of seconds before you feel them. With that one I thought our number was up.

I was in that one, and another 6.8 as a kid, my thought is 5.3 isn't much of a quake, in the bay area they are common occurrence, a couple a year seems like, this nest is still an engineering wonder, but a real shake would be something over 6.5

This is so wonderful thank you for posting this. I had so many happy thoughts as well questions like is that the mom or the dad, are the babies going under his/her body bec they are cold and is the adult fixing the leaves to keep them warm, a small fish was dropped in front of one of the babies near the end and I was surprised I thought they regurgitate their food to the mouths of their babies like other birds. I wanted to see the baby eat the fish :) but hopefully thats for another post.
