I truly believe Cillian Murphy deserves the win. I love Paul Giamatti. People don’t realise he’s been winning awards for many years for his work except the elusive Oscar but has been nominated. I think he’s delightful & wonderful in The Holdovers but apart from giving teachers their unsung hero praise I just didn’t get anything new or challenging from him in the role. It was a role tailor made for him & so it felt like his usual bag of tricks. I found his dialogue more quotable than his performance being memorable. I think in 10 years if he wins… we’ll remember him getting an Oscar finally but not for what movie. I just don’t think it’s strong in its longevity apart from being a Christmas movie. Meanwhile I think Oppenheimer will be regarded as one of the decades most defining movies. And Cillian’s performance is one of the biggest reasons why. I think there was a lot more in his performance than Paul Giamatti’s. Cillian had to change his accent, his voice, his posture, lose weight, learn Dutch. He takes Oppenheimer over years of his life. The movie is entirely about his character. He’s the star of a R rated biopic that he is in 95% of the films scenes. The camera lives on his face… giving both an internalised & exposing performance. He’s been in the industry a long time & has been under the radar but consistently giving stellar work. I just feel like he should finally be rewarded. It should be his year for this extraordinary performance. I want Cillian to win but more than that I think he deserves it this year. To imagine Oppenheimer winning so many awards but without Cillian makes me very upset to be honest considering he’s one of the biggest reasons why I think the film was so well received. I think Paul Giamatti might win because he’s a likeable guy, he gives the showier performance & mostly because he’s overdue. He’s got the veteran narrative & it doesn’t sit right with me. It should be about the performance alone. I have no doubt he’ll be back in a few years nominated again & again. The Academy & his peers love him naturally. There is an Oscar in his future I just don’t think it should be in 2024. It should be Cillian’s. Tough, tough race.

@@ashpie296 yeah I understand that (my favourite last year was Paul Mescal even though I adore Brendan Fraser) That’s why in my post I say Cillian SHOULD win but it’s a race & a competition. It's possible that the Best Actor race could mirror the 2016 race when Denzel Washington won SAG, but Casey Affleck won the Oscar. Paul Giamatti could win SAG, but Cillian Murphy could win the Oscar, or it could be reversed, or a sweep for either one 🤔 🤷‍♀️

I am rooting for Giamatti all the way to the Oscar, I honestly feel that way, critics precursor may give Giamatti all the awards, Cillian may take Bafta along the way, & come the Oscars ceremony, he takes the Oscar too coz I feel The Academy may go for their traditional favorite biopic performance, also the fact that he’s in OPPENHEIMER, then again Birdman won big & Keaton didn’t take home the gold trophy, & they didn’t award a biopic last year.

I really hope Oppenheimer wins big. This seems to be Nolan’s year as well as RDJs year, so the two of them winning Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor seems to be fairly likely at this point. I hope Cillian Murphy wins Best Actor. Nothing against Paul Giamatti, he was excellent, but Murphy’s performance was truly amazing. I don’t think I need to say much about RDJs performance outside of it being such a stark contrast, pun intended, to his portrayal as Iron Man in the MCU, but it shows just how great of an actor he still is after some people say they couldn’t see him as anything but Tony Stark. Plus of the nominees who are nominated without a win, he’s the one who has the longest track record of being nominated without a win, this being 31 years since his first nomination for Chaplin. I think Oppenheimer has a good chance at winning Cinematography, Original Score and Editing. That’s 7 wins right there and perhaps it could get another win or two as well. I’ve got a feeling Oppenheimer will win most of the Oscars it’s up for honestly. Thank you for your early predictions Brian and Cody. Hope you’re doing well, keep up the great work and take care!

But only three films have ever won for Picture *and* Actor *and* Supporting Actor, the last being "Ben Hur" in 1959. It could have happened on a number of occasions since then, but it hasn't. So if you think "Oppenheimer" and Downey are locks in their categories, a Murphy win looks less probable based on total Oscar history. Of course anything could happen. Just saying winning "patterns" usually don't amount to anything.

Interesting thing is every time in supporting Actress was a chaos or better to put it many contender vying for nominations but not from high profile films a lazy voting happens and some actress from a film everyone has seen (usually a top 5 contender) surprises and gets in even without much precursors. It happen in 2012 when Maggie Smith for Marigold Hotel, Judi Dench for Skyfall and Nicole Kidman for Paperboy were fighting for 5th place and in the end Jackie Weaver for Silver Linings happened. Similar situation happen with Marina de Tavira and this year with America Ferrera. Pike, Moore, Hüller and Cruz were fighting and at the end an actress from top 5 film got in showing on a lot of ballots probably on 5th place.

She expressed every kind of emotion there can be and she played a real historical figure and that's such an Oscar-bait movie. I liked Killers of The Flower Moon and I can understand it getting a representation win, but Lily Gladstone didn't give half as much as Carey did. I also think Barbie is still in with a chance for Best Picture. I reckon Oppenheimer will get Screenplay, Director, editing, actor and supporting actor.

I'm rooting for "The Holdovers" and "Maestro" for Best Picture, and am leaning more toward "The Holdovers." I've already seen "The Holdovers" twice: on streaming and in the theater, and am now considering seeing it again in the theater. I seldom pay NYC ticket prices to see a film that I already own on streaming. I never even heard of "The Holdovers" until I watched Neeko Watches Movies on his picks for the top 10 moves of 2023, where "The Holdovers" was Number 2 in his list. He has me hooked on purchasing the film on Amazon, and I also convinced by employer to watch the film and she loves it even more than I do, so she is also rooting for this film for Best Movie and Best Actor.

My current GoldDerby predictions (as of 23.2.24): *Best Original Screenplay:* 5. Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer (Maestro) 4. Sammy Burch and Alex Mechanik (May December) 3. Justine Triet and Arthur Harari (Anatomy of a Fall) 2. David Hemingson (The Holdovers) 1. Celine Song (Past Lives) After the AOAF snub at WGA, this really became a 2 horse race IMO. I still believe Past Lives will pull a Women Talking, but The Holdovers is not too far behind. *Best Adapted Screenplay:* 5. Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest) 4. Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer) 3. Tony McNamara (Poor Things) 2. Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach (Barbie) 1. Cord Jefferson (American Fiction) Another category affected by a WGA snub, since I had Poor Things at 1# all along, but it seems more and more that everything is coming up Jefferson in this category. *Best Supporting Actor:* 5. Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon) 4. Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things) 3. Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction) 2. Ryan Gosling (Barbie) 1. Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer) #AnOscarforDowney les gooooooo *Best Supporting Actress:* 5. Jodie Foster (Nyad) 4. America Ferrera (Barbie) 3. Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer) 2. Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple) 1. Da'Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) This one is pretty much a lock. *Best Lead Actor:* 5. Colman Domingo (Rustin) 4. Bradley Cooper (Maestro) 3. Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction) 2. Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) 1. Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) If Murphy wins here, it's game over for any other movie in Best Picture. *Best Lead Actress:* 5. Annette Bening (Nyad) 4. Carey Mulligan (Maestro) 3. Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) 2. Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) 1. Emma Stone (Poor Things) Top 3 are all win competitive, but Stone has been winning too much to deny by this point. *Best Director:* 5. Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest) 4. Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon) 3. Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall) 2. Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) 1. Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer) This is the biggest above the line lock, even more than Supporting Actress IMO. At long last, Nolan's time has come. The order of the other 4 is more arbitrary than anything else. *Best Picture:* 10. Maestro 9. Past Lives 8. Killers of the Flower Moon 7. The Zone of Interest 6. Anatomy of a Fall 5. American Fiction 4. Barbie 3. Poor Things 2. The Holdovers 1. Oppenheimer Poor Things was my 2 but I took it a spot down after the WGA snub. Anyways this is going to Oppenheimer almost certainly (says the guy who swore up and down La La Land and 1917 will win so take my dumb ass with a grain of salt).

I think is such a lazy argument “he’s overdue, the industry loves him”. Narratives, campaigns and how strong is your film matter. Cillian has been “overdue” as well, everyone loves the guy and you can’t ignore the fact that there’s no Oppenheimer without him. Yeoh won because of the strength of her film and her narrative. More people will watch Oppenheimer than Holdovers, also there’s the Payne allegations that could hurt as well. Oppenheimer is too strong of a contender for Cillian to lose.

If I’m being honest, and I haven’t seen it yet so I won’t comment on how fair it is, it’s the Oscar baiting by Bradley Cooper. For all I know the film is magnificent and deserves more than it’s getting. I won’t deny what I don’t know. But a partially black and white, biopic about a Jewish, bisexual conductor who did activism work for AIDS and had communist affiliations with the whole film about his marriage, is really every Oscar’s baiting feature you could possibly include. I think every one of those features has had at least one nomination in the last decade, I’d dare say most of them in the last 5 years. It’s really made Bradley Cooper the villain of the year as far as public opinion and press go. I think that’s why no one’s daring to touch it too much

It’s stupid to recognize up to 10 films as the best of the year but only nominate the same 3-5 in every category, which blatantly prevents other movies that would better choices for those categories to be nominated. Prime example: Oppenheimer getting nominated for Costume Design over TCP, a category TCP probably would’ve won (it would’ve been a pity win for the 85 version not getting a single win so the 2023 movie missing actually isn’t a big deal, just using it as an example). There was absolutely nothing about the costumes in Oppenheimer that stood out, especially in comparison the vibrant and lively costumes of TCP. Personally I think Barbie is gonna win Costume Design but my point is, had there let’s say 7 nominations per category, TCP and another film could’ve also gotten in. With more nomination slots, Spider-Verse would’ve made it into Original Score, KotFM would’ve made it into Adapted Screenplay, Melton would’ve made it in for Supporting Actor, Leo would’ve made it in for Lead Actor and Gerwig would’ve made it into Director.

Why are you guyz not mentioning MULLIGAN? She was the best thing about Maestro. She was great. I also hear that Gladstone kind of disappears from a large chunk of her movie. Stone may be good but I think older voters could be put off by the tone/subject matter of her movie. Just TOO out there if you will. Plus she just won one a few years ago. And don't forget about the possible splitting of votes which could put Gladstone and Stone out of the running allowing someone else to get it. I saw Benning's movie and gotta say she was committed to that role. She did do a great job and hell's bells how long are they gonna wait to give Benning her due? I think the only time a movie has won best picture and didn't win any other Oscar was Mutiny on The Bounty from 1935 (awards in 1936).Speaking of Barbie (LOL) I watched 30 minutes of it and could not stand it. America Ferrera's nomination is one of the weakest and most embarrassing nominations for supporting actress in the history of the Oscars. The fact that she was nominated over Sandra Huller for a double nominee, Viola Davis, Claire Foy, Julianne Moore, Rosamund Pike, Penelope Cruz, Taraji P, Henson, or for the love of all that is holy RACHAEL MCADAMS for Are You There God It's Me Margaret.... It proves that what you guys said is true: the academy watched certain films, and made their choices within those films. They were lazy. They did not do their job. Let's just say what everyone kinda wants to say but doesn't really want to say: she got nominated for delivering the main sociological message speech that summed up the whole movie and what it was (not subtly) trying to say, not because this was a fantastic piece of acting by any means.

Julianne Moore's and Rosamund Pike's films just collapsed. May December and Saltburn are type films that cant get a lone supporting nomination. Psychological films with a clear lead will get either all or none. Like taxi diver, Can you imagine De Niro doesn't get a nomination but Joster does. Taraji P, Henson's film lost its steam, RACHAEL MCADAMS 's film released way too early. it is ok but that's it. There was no way Sandra Huller was getting double nom. It is possible at BAFTAs due to jury system but very difficult at Oscars. Although there is no magic formula for double nom, both performances need to get equal amount of precursors which Huller didnt. Viola Davis needed something with that role like screenplay or best film nominaton.

The content of her speech resonated with me but the delivery (for me) was not compelling and generally the character was a little flat, mom who disconnected from her teenage daughter and who has a bit of darkness to her. Not exactly the depth of character I would expect to be portrayed to gain an Oscar nomination

I was gonna argue but you’re most likely right 😂. I was excited for her getting the nomination but I live in the UK, half the actresses you mentioned are in films that didn’t come out until incredibly recently and I was ill for a month so I’m probably just really behind 😂. I mean two of them haven’t been out for a week yet, which covers three of your suggestions and my lungs aren’t at full capacity so really what do I know 😂. I do think it’s a shame about Rosamund Pike, she was outstanding but Saltburn receiving nothing (because it’s got an incredibly weak plot in my opinion and felt a bit like it was for teenagers) hasn’t helped her case at all. Such a shame. And with Julianne Moore I think the imperfections in the scripting of her character have weakened an otherwise excellent performance. Which isn’t her fault but how it goes.

I'd like "Barbie" to win Adapted Screenplay because it really was interesting that Gerwig & Baumbach came up with this concept when told to write a movie based on a popular toy.

They are a couple in real life and have both had great careers so far without winning, so it would be rather fitting.

I have no idea if it will win or not, but I’ll be screaming at my teevee “how they hell is this an adapted screenplay!”
