This year's Oscar proves that narrative matters a lot. That a strange wacky movie with heart and originality can win big. That the Academy has no problem leaving half of its Best Picture nominees empty-handed. That the BAFTA love for All Quiet on the Western Front was not a BAFTA thing; heck it won 4 Oscars! Can't wait for the next season!!

"the Academy has no problem leaving half of its Best Picture nominees empty-handed" - this is far from new. Go back and look at the 70s and 80s, when films like the Turning Point and The Color Purple would get 11 noms and win nothing.

The effect of the SAGs coming after BAFTA was colossal!! Every year since 2013, the BAFTAs have predicted 3 or 4 of the acting categories. The last time they didn’t predict a single category WAS 1998 - a twenty-five-year stat has been broken!

Congrats to you two on your successful predictions! To me Everything Bagel Hidden Buttplug was the most likely best picture candidate I saw all year. It wasn't my subjective favorite (that was Triangle of Sadness), but EEAAO hit all the necessary notes to be a serious contender, especially relative to the last few best picture winners. It was topically and culturally relevant, but most importantly it was fun and leaves the viewer with a good feeling.
@pneumanaut1

“All the necessary notes” … what were these notes? And how were they superior in this film to the other 9? I have been searching for hard support on why this film was deemed the best, support from an external evaluation source to compare all films on the same basis, and I have found none. And no one seems to be able to explain it either. (And its wins in other competitions don’t count. Their evaluation tools should be different.) Any source I use, the film that won best picture should not have won. Can you please explain to me what these notes are that you used to bring out this film has the number one best picture of this last year in comparison to the rest of the contenders? I genuinely am searching for a non-biased evaluation tool to use to compare all the contenders where EEAAO comes out with the highest score as best pic. And another one for each of the other art forms on which it won.

@@michaelangelo2192 what about original song category , they didn't even nominated RRR ( maybe the Brits got their ass burned watching it) RRR freaking won every award for original songs ( golden globe, HCA,oscars n more)
The best wins are easily Michelle Yeoh and Brendan Fraser.
Probably the Oscars EVER! I can't remember the last time I was this happy with any Oscar wins. Whilst I'm so happy that EEAAO swept, the best win for me is Michelle Yeoh 🍾🥳🎆 Now I can breathe 😊

Terrible Oscars. Out of the top 8 categories, I disagreed with 7 of them. Fraser was the only win I agreed with.

watched you live yesterday; I'm the one who told everyone to hit the "like" button !
Finally, A24 is a force to be reckoned with. The 9 Oscars, especially the sweep of the acting categories, more than makes up for Uncut Gems being snubbed by the academy three years ago.
When The Whale won makeup I knew Brendan was about to win Actor because the main reason Elvis was winning makeup was also because it was winning Actor so when it lost makeup, I knew it was Brendans time
It's rare but The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Le Vien Rose also got best actor/actress with make up/hair with NO best picture nomination.

But Best Actress nominees/winners less often have a Best Picture nomination than Best Actor.

That’s what I was thinking too. The makeup/acting win is also just a common occurrence (darkest hour)
i really doubted baftas this year due to the changes they made internally to the voting body, ended up 46th in goldderby
When All Quiet had 4 wins I was wondering if it might actually upset EEAAO. There was a possibility All Quiet wins adapted, Banshees wins original, Top Gun wins editing, Cate Blanchett wins lead. Even if Daniels take director at that point it would have been very close and probably would have gone to All Quiet... Then EEAAO started winning and winning big. Screenplay, Editing, Lead . With Women Talking also winning screenplay All Quiet was out of the race. Who would have thought back in December that season favorites like The Fablemans, Elvis, Banshees, and Tar would all go home empty handed?
This was definitely the year for blockbusters at the oscars
Me watching the Oscars: - I cheered up watching Guillermo del Toro winning - I ugly cried of joy with Ke Huy Quan - 🫤 when I saw Angela Bassett’s reaction. My pick was Stephanie Hsu. 😢 -jumped of joy for Sarah Polley . That script is monumental. - loved The Daniel’s speeches - screamed like crazy for Brendan ❤❤❤ - “yas yas Queen “ for Michelle Yeoh - Riri smashed it . What a performance ❤ -For a hot second I thought All Quiet was gonna win best Picture but EEOAO swept literally everything! - such a bummer for Elvis going empty handed😢😢

The problem with these kinds of sweeps is so many deserving films go empty-handed. Elvis, Tar, Banshees, Babylon, and even the Batman all deserve at least one award. I was thinking about LOTR movies, which only had 1 acting nomination, and no wins. If it came out today, would it be nominated for more acting awards and maybe a win? If EEAAO can win 3/4 acting categories (not all performances were deserving & even their best performance didn't win), then no one should disregard epic scifi/fantasy for acting noms again. Or are the acting noms only reserved for indie sci-fi/fantasy or when that singular performance is undeniably best in that year?

This was the most symptomatic season so far in showing and confirming how the academy has changed. It almost feels like a movie too "Hollywoodish" will never again win Best Picture. It's gonna be interesting to see how people will conduct their predictions from now on, because i think now everyone will try to guess from the start what will be that one movie that will have that load of passion, charisma and inclusion. I remember that in the very beggining of this season you were still predicting movies like Babylon and The Fabelmans to win BP, i think this season taught us once and for all how it works now.
