Here in Sweden, we tend to ignore "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" in favor of our own film and TV adaptation of the novel. However, I will always praise Rooney Mara as the best version of Lisbeth Salander we've got so far, even more so than Noomi Rapace. And while it's a tragedy that Fincher didn't get to make his trilogy of the Millennium books, I'm so glad we got at least this one movie. Rooney Mara will probably win an Oscar one day, but I'm having a very hard time imagining her being able to top her performance as Lisbeth Salander. She should have won that Oscar over Meryl Streep (in my humble opinion).

@@owenbloomfield1177 You are entitled to your opinion. I however found the American version to be an improvement as an adaptation of the original novel. When I read the book by Stieg Larson, my vision of his Lisbeth Salander is much more close to the performance of Rooney Mara, than that of Noomi Rapace. The American version also followed the Larson's work more closely than the Swedish one. That's why I prefer it.

I agree on Driver completely. His wall punch scene with Scarlett Johansson not only launched a thousand memes, but has had real staying power for his performance and heavily influenced the big argument scene in Anatomy of a Fall. That said, Phoenix's win that year was a combination of the halo effects of his late brother River and the late Heath Ledger's Joker Oscar win and also a "it's his time" mentality. Now JP is a damn good actor in his own right, all the way back to his days as "Leaf Phoenix" in Parenthood you could see it. As a fellow Gen X-er I've always held a soft spot for he and River.

Allison Janney DESERVED her Oscar it was just her time. I do believe that Laurie’s time is coming sooner rather then later. I would really love to see her daughter Zoe Perry win an Oscar one day. If you’ve watched “Young Sheldon” and saw the depth of her performance she can win one.

Might not be the most original pick, but if we just look at the strongest performances that didn’t win I just have to go with Leo in The Wolf of Wall Street. It’s probably his best performance ever, absolutely incredible both the dramatic and comedic side and it would’ve been my personal favourite best actor winner of the decade (maybe together with Casey Affleck)

My favorite actors are Edward Norton, James Spader and Johnny Depp and none of them has ever won an Oscar. How is that even possible? They are extremely talented and versatile. In my opinion, Norton should have won for American History X, Spader for Sex, Lies and Videotapes and Depp for many roles he's done throughout his career

Poor Leo. I’ve read that in the beginning of his career, they thought he was a “TV” actor. Then when Titanic hit, his ego is what prevented him from playing the “Oscar Game”. He became political & pushing environmental causes that the studios didn’t want to be associated with. BFF with Al Gore didn’t help when Tipper Gore was championing censorship in movies & music. He has always been loved by us fans, but he became a little big for his britches, going up against the Hollywood machine. Definitely courageous, but sunk his Oscar chances for years. It would be admirable, if we all didn’t know how badly he wanted that elusive Oscar.

Rooney Mara's name is Mare-a, not Maura. Being a NY Giants fan, for over 40 years I'ver heard her grandfather, father, uncles and I even believe her sister Kate say Mare-a. Don't know where the other pronunciation came from. And yes, I totally agree, she was fantastic in TGWDT and should have won the Oscar.

Rooney Mara SHOULD have won the Oscar for her transformative, phenomenal performance as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I am obsessed with the books. I like the Swedish movies. I fucking love David Fincher’s film. But my god Rooney Mara blew me away. Lisbeth Salander is my favourite female character of all time. Her character goes through quite the journey & has since she was a child… Rooney just captured her exactly as I imagined her. She changed her appearance. Her accent. Rooney has to do some unimaginable scenes. It’s a role you never see on screen. I can’t rate it high enough. We all know Meryl Streep is iconic but she already had 2 Oscars. She didn’t need a 3rd that year. Rosamund Pike SHOULD have won the Oscar for playing Amy Dunne in Gone Girl. Talk about another fantastic female character in a David Fincher movie… the role of a lifetime. You don’t see many characters like Amy on screen ever. Like Brian said there are so many layers to Amy & her evolution over the course of the film & her unravelling is handled brilliantly in Rosamund’s very capable hands. Adore Julianne Moore but it was her overdue Oscar let’s be honest.

It's a shame you don't think much of the 2014 Best Actress lineup, because it does feature one of my favorite performances of the decade: and that's Marion Cotillard in Two Days One Night (she is absolutely heartbreaking in that)... I'm also a huge fan of Reese Witherspoon's performance in Wild. I would go so far as to say I prefer these two performances to the ones both of them actually won for...

I was searching to see if someone mentioned Marion Cotillard's performance! When I watched the press conference that morning, I literally cheered out of excitement. It was a truly great performance to have been able to earn its nomination and richly deserved. I remember at the time GoldDerby even imagined Marion being at second place, though it was clear Julianne Moore was going to win.

I am still convinced that since get out got a ton of nominations in 2017, Hereditary got ignored ESPECIALLY TONI COLET the next year. I wanted to like Get Out so bad, and while it was ok it didn’t blow me away. I went into Hereditary with no expectations and it turned into one of my favorite films. Editing since I’m more into the video. Leo’s win should have been for The Aviator. Fully agree on Melissa McKarthy I 100% disagree with you on Gravity. The movie was awful, both Sandra Bulik and Clooney were awful in it. I get your point on her tragic backstory, and the effects were good, but the whole thing was Oscar bait without being a biography or a period piece.
