The fact that Meryl Streep was nominated for "Florence Foster Jenkins" and "Into the Woods" but Toni Colette wasn't for "Hereditary" says everything about the Oscars.

The thing is when Toni Colette gives a great performance, unfortunately that year’s best Actress or supporting actress competition was so high, Same with Glenn Close 🤷, there is nothing to blame on Meryl streeps those two performances coz those performances were so good 🔥

_Rush_ was great when it came out. I never rewatched it though until like 2022 when I caught it on TV and it was just nowhere near as great as I remembered it being. I think it was because of _Ford v Ferrari_ which was so good that it makes _Rush_ feel so small in scope by comparison. Also, _Rush_ doesn't really make you feel the weight of the racing and of the engines the way _Ford v Ferrari_ does. But Bruhl should've been nominated for sure. But the movie was a flop and Bruhl is/was not "part of the Hollywood club" so to speak, so he missed.

@NeverLetMeGo777 you might think so, but I've literally never heard anyone mention that performance in that regard. I'm not saying you're wrong, but she's done stellar work - work that I hold in higher regard that she hadn't won or been nominated for. For my money, boogie nights is her best, but naturally I'm biased. I love that movie.

@thankyoujodi Still Alice and The Hours are the absolute best from Julianne. But then again, she has delivered so many amazing performances in her career, so it is understandable that some of her more 'showy' and 'louder' performances are better liked. But what she did in Still Alice, the subtlety and nuances, how she peeled away so slowly layer by layer and little by little requires so much of the masterful acting skils that only an actor of Julianne's caliber can deliver.

I think with American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook: the Academy seemed to be on a real David O. Russell high for a while. They seem to do this thing where certain filmmakers are front-and-center as their chosen “it” directors, and they’ll shower that filmmaker and their work with love and nominations, regardless of the quality. And I think Russell was that for a time. He’s fallen off of that in recent years, especially with his work on films like Amsterdam, and the resurfacing of his abusive tendencies on his film sets (especially towards George Clooney, Lily Tomlin, and Amy Adams). But I think that may explain why those films got so much love in those years, he was just one of “their guys” at that time. Though I agree, American Hustle didn’t click with me when I saw it. And it doesn’t seem to have aged all that well either.

Lol Laura Dern is actually an inspired nom. Just because she doesn't have a lot of screen time and doesn't cry and scream into your face doesn't mean she was bad. But Brian is not a fan of subtle performances. There are no small roles only small actresses.

Laura Dern has so much muscle within the Academy, that the nomination for Wild albeit unnecessary doesn't surprise me. I like when Denzel plays against his typical huffing and puffing characters. So it's refreshing to see that Roman nomination. If you ask me, I would've nominated James Franco instead but we all know that wasn't happening. What is it with David O. Russell and his actors, I mean... they get in! When J.Lo missed BAFTA I already knew she wasn't going to make it in the Oscars. I don't understand the disdain for Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl. He was fantastic!! I love that Florence nomination for Meryl Streep 🤭 I still have to think about who I would take out that year because yes, Amy Adams was snubbed that year! Sam Rockwell.... Lol, but I thought he was better in Charlie's Angels -vs- Vice. At least CA made me notice him as an actor and go who is this? -- Vice seems like more of a potential good karma nod?!? --- Rockwell did star in Clownhouse, a pretty decent low budget slasher, but behind the scenes was horrendous. Then Sam did spend well over a decade after that trying to get some momentum going, to be noticed. And one thing I do have to give younger Sam credit for is, it seems like he was willing to take on any role, do anything for the role and showed a lotta drive.

As always, you make some great points. Adams's snub for Arrival was astounding. Leading into the Oscars, Arrival's chances of a Best Picture and Director nod were iffy, but Adams was supposed to be the sure thing, and then nada! I think Streep is good and I know a few people who think it is one of her best performances, but I am ambivalent about it. How cool for Rene Russo - one of the most underrated actresses of the last 25 years - to get some recognition. But alas - like her performance in The Thomas Crown Affair, it was not to be. I agree with your comments about the performances from Dern, Redmayne, Bates, and Rockwell. The Washington performance for that film is absurd - it is almost like they decided to just throw nominations at Washington just for stepping on screen. I love Theron, but agree wholeheartedly that her snub for Fury Road (like Adams, she should have been the sure thing for that film) and then getting a nod for the surface glitz nonsense of Bombshell playing a not particularly likable or interesting person is puzzling. I actually think Branagh's work is better than you give it credit for in My Week With Marilyn, although he is undoubtedly overshadowed by Williams. I also think you have underrated Weaver's work in Silver Linings Playbook because her role is not as flashy as the others. Honestly, when I saw the film I somehow knew she had a good shot at a nomination. I don't get your hatred of Cooper in American Hustle though. Honestly, going into Oscars seasons there were two sure people I knew would get nods that year and they were Cooper and Lawrence from that film. I was not surprised by Bale and Adams nominations, but the precursors did not make them a sure bet. I think both Cooper and Lawrence are both doing high caliber character work in that film, which is something marquee talents rarely get a crack at. In fact, outside of A Star Is Born, I would rank this as probably Cooper's best onscreen work - with Silver Linings close behind it.

No offense man, but you apparently don’t know much about acting. Have you ever acted, or taken an acting class, or taken a theater arts class? Do you know what character work is? Creating a character? It’s probably the most challenging thing about acting. Jacki Weaver was wonderful in Silver Linings Playbook. I was shocked to find out afterwards that she’s actually from Australia. She was soooo Philly. The run-of-the-mill performance from that movie that didn’t need to be there was actually Robert De Niro’s. Charlize Theron was so authentic as Megyn Kelly that I had to keep reminding myself that she wasn’t her. Eddie Redmayne’s portrayal in The Danish Girl was a thing of astonishing beauty. I haven’t seen the movie since it came out, and all these years later, I still remember the look in his eyes when he got his first kiss from a man, or rather when she. All the emotions and fear and elation from that life milestone played out in his eyes for just a couple of seconds. Actors strive to achieve tiny, authentic, moving effects like that in the moment. I think it’s his best performance. And Meryl Streep in Florence Foster Jenkins was absolutely hilarious. The scene where she’s singing the aria in the theater is one of the funniest moments in any movie I’ve ever seen. If there is a movie, she should not have been nominated for, it is as Music of the Heart, 1999. Not this one.

Sounds like I'm in the minority, but I will die on the hill of Jackie Weaver deserving her nomination. Silver Linings was my introduction to her, and she blew me away. She's playing a character who has been sidelined for decades by bigger personalities and bigger problems, and she's like a live wire of repressed anxiety and exasperation, trying to keep her family in the realm of sanity--just like the actress herself grounds every scene she's in, more often than not through hilarious facial expressions and carriage rather than dialogue. In an era of "strong women" being dominant in the conversation (whether they're well-written or not), I love seeing more naturally timid or patient characters show their strength in more subtle ways. Mama bear, she may not be, but more than anyone else in the film, Jackie made me believe her character could be a real person. It's not an exceptional movie, but I had a similar response to Amy Adams' character in Big Eyes. The way she carried her anxiety in her body reminded me so much of my own mother's mannerisms.

@@davedavis8786 I liked the idea of it but and I do think Bale did the best job here but I don't know if I would go as far as the nominations .

Barkhad Abdi for Captain Philips would have been a better choice than Bradley Cooper for American Hustle. Even Daniel Bruhl for Rush

I liked Cooper in American Hustle but I think Gyllenhaal in Prisoners would’ve been a great nomination!

Just my opinion, but i really think Bradley Cooper shouldn't be on this list. He deserved his oscar nomination for American Hustle. He really embodied the eccentric and over confident nature of his character

First time I don't agree with you re: most of these 10! I do agree about JLo and Meryl. I do agree that I forgot Laura Dern was in WILD! I liked BOMBSHELL more than you did. Didn't like Nicole Kidman in that film. One I would add would be Florence Pugh.

Florence Pugh should have won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar instead of Laura Dern at the 2020 awards ceremony in my opinion.

to be fair...why did AMERICAN HUSTLE get ANY nominations? what a chore to watch!

Normally I agree with you, but you lost me with this video! Charlize Theron became Megyn Kelly in Bombshell and not only deserved the nomination but should have won over Renee Zellweger's horrid impersonation of Judy Garland, and I adored the film American Hustle, it was my favorite from that year! I do agree with Denzel only getting nominated because they needed to fill a spot, but you failed to mention James Franco who was a shoo in until allegations surfaced about him and I also agree about Laura Dern and Kathy Bates, Jennifer Lopez was robbed!
