    When you mention how actresses in the 1970s or earlier often didn't seem to be happy to be there, it's probably just that they're nervous, as the result was much more up in the air than it is now. There was no SAG, and BAFTA was held later, so there weren't the overlap voters that could give an indication of who really had a shot. There were some big surprises (e.g., your example of Glenda Jackson for A Touch of Class). Nowadays if an actress knows that she won't win then she can enjoy the nomination and have fun on Oscar night.

    Talia Shire probably would have won had she been in the Best Supporting Actress category. I think her facial expression, to me at least, was one of extreme stress, and not disappointment for losing. I remember reading in one of Rona Barrett's Hollywood Gossip magazines that year, where Faye Dunaway was questioned about this, and she gushed how gracious Talia was to her backstage and at the post Oscar parties and congratulating Faye on her win.

And yes I've noticed that reaction from Jessica Lange during previous viewings of the clip. That Glenn Close reaction is devastating, same with Angela. And to answer your question on the 1974 Best Actress race, Joanne Woodward was the frontrunner for Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams since she won the BAFTA & New York Film Critics Circle Awards for Best Actress.

  • @jayiijay

    @jayiijay

    I'm not so sure about it being Joanne. Marsha Mason won the Globe, which at the time was bigger than BAFTA, nobody followed BAFTA back then. And some thought Barbra Streisand might win a second since she was Streisand, or even Ellen Burstyn since The Exorcist was the 49% co-front-runner to win Best Picture (with The Sting at 51% - made up %'s of course but it was supposed to be close between them). Glenda Jackson felt like 5th in line, having just won 3 years earlier for Women in Love (in a very very weak year where the true best Barbara Loden in Wanda was not nominated), and with many saying the Touch of Class Picture nomination was really bad, considering other eligible films, e.g., Mean Streets, Badlands, Don't Look Now, Paper Moon, even The Way We Were and Sleeper.

    Shire actually won a few critics awards for supporting actress that year, so maybe she thought she had a shot. But there was a lot of talk about how hard it was to fill the best actress lineups in the early to mid-70s, which is one reason we see some arguably supporting performances in lead (look at the 1975 lineup!), and we see a lot of foreign language performances (which is actually a great thing, imho).

The Oscars had already made the mistake of not giving her the Oscar for "What's Love Got to Do with It?". They weren't going to do it again..... But they did.... And then the Honorary Oscar seemed more like a kind of "sorry, don't cry" than because of the fantastic career she had... I work in film and during an awards campagin, a team is focused intently on getting someone nominated and then, if possible, to be a frontrunner. Whenever there is positive press, it's sent the client's way -- "Look, someone said you should have won." I remember Entertainment Weekly interviewed Academy members anonymously about who they voted for and someone said "Mark Wahlberg for The Departed because he was the only nominee who seemed to know what he was doing in his role." Then Mark, a long long shot to win that year, seemed so disappointed when he lost. It seemed to be slanting to Eddie Murphy and then Alan Arkin was a surprise winner but Mark wasn't even a contender but because of that article, I think he gave himself hope everyone loved him and was going to vote for him.

    I remember when Jay Davidson- The Crying Game, lost to Gene Hackman- Unforgiven... when they announced Hackman, you see Davidson lean over and mouth "Told You' with a 'whatever' eye roll.

    @@frauleinmona Don't get upset. But this Jaye Davidson's only Oscar nomination to date in The Crying Game at Paramount/ Lionsgate/StudioCanal in 1993. He was lost to Gene Hackman in his Oscar winning supporting role in Unforgiven at Warner Bros. under the Time Warner banner since May 19, 1985. Oh, by the way, I'm very sorry about that comment so I have just erased it instead!

    Great Video! I can understand Eddie Murphy’s reaction tho. His performance was just as beloved as Jennifer Hudson’s in Dreamgirls. He won the Golden Globe and the SAG award, Eddie and Alan was kinda neck and neck in competition, and Eddie almost had the upper hand. The Oscar still went to Alan (god rest his soul) and everybody decided to blame Eddie’s loss on Norbit coming out so soon after Dreamgirls which was bad timing on Paramount/Dreamworks part but I still find that excuse to be bullshit. Actors win Oscars then go on to do bad movies all the time! If Eddie gets punished for doing a bad movie then everyone else needs to as well, I believe the true reason he lost was because of his comments about the academy’s racism back in the 80s and some of the voters still hold a grudge against him over that but oh well.

    Murphy losing was the biggest upset by odds in Oscar history, he was 1-10 to win, I know because I wanted to bet him but at those odds I was like forget it. He really got the shaft
