Great piece. For some reason, I get a pleasant and relaxing tingly sensation down my neck and to my arms when I view this video. I hope to own one of these amazing chairs someday.

Although I shouldn't be surprised, It's incredible how much is still done by hand. The sounds of the manufacturing are just amazing.

You really should get out more.

They're comfortable. My grandfather had one in his house. I used it to watch TV. Dunno if that was the best use of a piece I've seen in the Chicago Art Museum.....

this chair is so comfortable

I bought a copy of this chair at a garage sale for $25 about 12 years ago. It had been my intention to see if I could find a real one if I could afford it, but there is one glitch in the original, if you ask me- I am about 6'2. If you are on the tall side, your head will be over the head rest, and you will have no neck support at all. This is not to be disrespectful of the chair though, I still think it's a dynamo. Even if I don't fit in it.

again those questioning the price of this legendary chair,most of the price comes from the fact its quality materials,low manufacturing volume,mostly hand assembly and finally royalty cost to the designer.yes if you add the total cost of material it should be less than $800US but that can said about Rolexes,Porsches,Gucci products where the final cost is is 50X more expensive than the actual material worth.Its called exclusivity.

Were this chairs filled originally with duck down or feathers ? Because I have one the very firsy generation with the big seal of herman miller underneath.

+edgar660307 Yes, originally they were down I believe. There's a video on youtube with Eames presenting the chair for the first time where he says that it was filled with feathers. Enjoy your chair.

Can someone tell me the difference between the Vitra and Herman Miller made lounge chair?

The Vitra Eames Lounge Chair differs from the Herman Miller Eames Lounge in small details. The castings for the base, the glides, clips for holding cushions differ. The biggest difference today is that Herman Miller is making the plywood shells of the Eames Lounge thicker than the original, it looks more like a reproduction by Segal.. Lookup Olek Lejbzon's blog post "Is my Eames Chair Real" for photo comparisons of the Herman Miller and Vitra versions, as well as various reproductions,

I did try out the chair at a local distributer salon. It is really comfortable, the back angle is spot on and overall build quality does seem premium. However, 6000 bucks for a chair... That's really steep.

We sell a cheap replica with vinyl in our shop for $599. It looks almost identical but why would you buy a classic chair and put vinyl on it?

It depends.. many different manufacturers make knock-offs. Some are good, some are terrible. But I don't think they could afford having their chairs done by hand. I am certain that they're all machine-built.

How many it costs??

Both Herman Miller and Vitra make official versions of the Eames chair, with a few very minor differences between them. Herman Miller contracted Charles and Ray Eames to design the chair exclusively for Herman Miller, later on due to the popularity of the chair Herman Miller licensed the design to a few European manufacturers, Vitra is the only one that remains.

Ask an engineer. Laminated wood is far stronger and simultaneously more flexible than any cut or carved wood. Alternating crossed grain laminates make for a nearly unbreakable sheet.

I came to KZread to see if everyone else was as disappointed as I was that there was nothing to do with forming the ply. Looks like I'm not alone.

ich poste hier mal in deutsch. hab ihn mir vor ca. zwei jahren gekauft (VITRA) und es nie bereut. das schlimme ist allerdings das ich fast jeden abend beim fernsehen darin einschlafe. daher verpasse ich in der regel immer das ende der spielfilme.

It shows mostly people's faces, scissors and screws in a box. Perplexing. Good though that there isn't some irritating music to make one more irritated.

I like the idea, but why the hell does everything has to be in closeup? At no point do you get the feeling that something iconic is being built since you never get to the the entirety of it - I think this is more about the documentaries video ability than about the chair..

Maybe you’re right, the only thing what is really disturbing is the fact that the idea behind the Eames furniture was to design high quality products for the most(!) people for an affortable price. For those who didnt earn that much money, to pay 7000€+ for a high qualitiy chair, this is a really sad fact! Not in one frame you can see the whole chair....

Bent plywood furniture was made by the ancient Egyptians, B.C. Samuel Gragg made a very modern looking chair in 1804. Belter and various others laminated plywood furniture in the 1860's that holds up better than most modern bent plywood of the 20th century. And the Spruce Goose, larger than a Boeing 747, was made of bent plywood in the 1940's. Nothing new about the technology, other than radio frequency presses for fast curing developed in the 1920's. Good marketing hype though.

I own one original and one imitation. And I there are some quality short cuts. But those differences are not worth 6000E, because this it the price difference. I would say they should be 1500E more expensive max. But it's vitra politics, they charge so much because they obviously they can.

With a $7,000.00 plus price tag for plywood and aluminum, you're more than paying for the name. I'm going with Stickley. At least with them you get real wood and not this Bauhaus baloney.
