Hey Yong, love the show, wanted to add my 2 cents as a former EA Support Rep... I got hired to EA Support in the lead-up to Battlefield 3. I thought it was going to be an amazing, life-changing experience (give me a break, I was young and naive). It most definitely was not. Most of the people hired meet one requirement..."can you, for the most part, speak in complete sentences?" I, as an avid gamer at the time, was dismayed by the amount of people hired that didn't games, nor had any "technical" experience. The training was abysmal. We were trained on one ticket system, but during my first day on the floor we switched to Salesforce. I had a crash course in Salesforce training and was sent back out there. I'd say I had about 2 hours of experience with the ticketing and chat systems before being put to work. Chat agents were REQUIRED to take 3 chats at a time. So, if people are getting huge delays in responses from agents?...well that's because that agent is literally having 2 other conversations at the same time. Technically we supported "over 1,000 games and services" but never received any training on it. For most issues, I would Google the problem and talk through whatever I found there. Now, most chats I took were one of 3 things...someone complaining about POGO, someone wanting a Battlefield 3 refund (which, at the time, I was happy to give because I was so disheartened and disillusioned with the job), or someone trying to scam/phish their way into getting FIFA for free. However, we were told to give away things like coupons or "unlock all Battlefield guns" for customers wanting a refund to try and keep them. All chats are monitored, reviewed, and discussed with you either during your shift or at some point later in the day/week. Everything you say is scrutinized, and if you don't have 3 active chats, you got called out in front of everyone else. There are so many other ways the job was complete BS...but this comment is running long as-is. I'll end on a positive note. I was actually pretty good at the job (I am a gamer, I understand computers and how to troubleshoot) and kept getting put on the busiest shifts. After about 2-3 weeks of this, in the middle of a shift I stood up, walked out, and handed my badge to the front desk. I met some friends at a bar in Austin (because that's where this support office was) and had a great time. It still is, to this day, one of the most cathartic moments of my entire life.

Damn, i feel sorry for you that you had to go trough that and had this rude wake up call. I think many of us would loved to have a job in the gaming industry when younger. I know i did, didn't care if it would be working for a publisher or game magazine (yeah those were big back then, websites were on the rise but not massive yet). I applied several times for jobs like you had, never had a reply btw but i guess i lived in the wrong country hehe....still, can always try right? I remember when Battlefield 3 came out. The game had some massive launch problem, for some reason not everyone was able to connect to the servers. My friend, who lived in the same town, and i both were avid Battlefield fans. He was able to get in just fine, i however was unable too. So i did what everyone does, going to the FAQ, try to find my issue there. I was told to write a post in the tech part of the forums. So i did...what happened? I GOT BANNED FOR 5 DAYS FROM THE FLIPPING FORUMS....why? No idea, i did what was asked, i was polite, i wrote down the exact problem, i wrote down that my friend had no issue at all. Gave them my specs and all the info that might been handy for them to find the problem....So for 5 damn days i was unable to contact support on the forums, but the phone number was a international call so to expensive for me back then to call up...yeah really classy way of treating customers. I heard quite a few people got banned while they reported broken things in the games without being these "Hey fuckers your fucking shit game doesn't fucking work you cunts" kinda messages. I guess the Ego was hurt alot or they didn't want anything negative about the game being public during the first few weeks.

Thanks for sharing man, I really enjoyed reading your story. I worked for several years at an AT&T customer service call center. In my time I was a front line agent, chat support, manager, and eventually trainer. Your story and the one in the video are just par for the course. I avoid customer service if at all possible since my experience. Like you said, most of the reps are not experts in the product/service of their company and extensive training is unrealistic. It also doesn't help that customer service jobs are a sink for the lowest caliber of employee to feed into. And the jobs are so exhausting that even those people don't care about the job and flee as soon as possible. The chatlogs shown in the video seem clear to me, the rep was being told not to provide a refund and do whatever it takes. I saw that at AT&T. Sadly, the front lines act hard ball and try to outlast persistent customers. Then if that customer perseveres and actually talks to a manager, they usually get what they want. The whole process is a tremendous waste of everyone's time. But this way, the company avoids giving a good amount of compensation.

The best way to deal with this kind of thing is by going through your bank. Dispute the charge, fill out the form, include any pertinent information - i.e. the screen grabs of chat, then let the bank handle it. This is how I got my refund for Fallout 76' after they stopped allowing refunds. It takes time, but you don't need to do anything after you file for the most part. As long as you meet the business in questions refund policy (which this person clearly did), they have to give you the refund, this is required by FTC law. They generally won't argue with a bank, and certainly not for 15 euros. This person wasted far too much time on this process. Once EA said they wouldn't give them a refund I would have just filed a claim. Another option is if the company you have a dispute with is located in the US is The Better Business Bureau. This should work even if you're located outside the USA. Again, go to the website, fill out the form, which takes about 10 minutes, then wait. They handle everything for you. As long as you're in the right you will get your money back. Bottom line is; you're not powerless against companies like EA, Bethesda, and Blizzard, etc. There are people who will fight for you, for free. Use them.

@@whytho1690 No, I get it, not being about the money, its the principle of the matter. But why waste that much time when you don't have to and actually get some results? You will rarely win alone, which is why I posted what I posted. Seriously I could see EA giving this guy the run around indefinitely. I never went to the Reddit thread to look at what happened. I just wanted to inform the viewers here that there are options. Not everyone knows that you can actually dispute a charge with your bank. Not everyone knows about the Better Business Bureau, especially outside the USA. I wanted to let people know that there are options for them if they find themselves in a similar situation as this person. I know there are countless people still waiting for a refund for Fallout 76'. This is how you get said refund. The more people know about these simple ways to protect themselves from the shady ass business practices of these types of greedy companies the better. The more claims against them they get from the Better Business Bureau the better, that shit adds up, and it ain't good for companies that screw over customers on a regular basis.

I wouldn't put it past them to require the user to waive any rights or offers for such as part of accepting the EULA, and hey, it's your fault for installing it and not reading it. >.< I mean, it's not like any *more* bad press will actually hurt them in any meaningful way, ever, so why should they care?

  • @AndragonLea

@@HeavyMetalMouse In Europe, EULA's regularly get thrown out of court. The rationale here is that the courts KNOW that most people don't read 15 pages of fine print before installing and playing a game they bought, that they often can't read said fine print before buying the title (which is like adding additional contractual obligations on a customer after making a purchase, which means you deceived them) and because many of them don't comply with EU law. As far as the courts are concerned you can "accept" an EULA that cedes your first born child to EA in exchange for playing Starwars Battlefronts, but that doesn't mean EA is entitled to it. The EULA has to conform to the law, not the other way around. You don't often hear it getting that far simply because there's a lot of money and time involved in getting a case far enough along to actually get to this stage - at least not for games that cost 15 bucks. Most people just don't care enough, which is what these companies depend on. They put fraudulent or straight out illegal parts into their EULA simply because A) it may be legal in SOME countries, making it possible to deny refunds there on legal grounds and B) it gives them a bullshit excuse to say no to customers even in countries where this isn't legal, simply because customers almost never take the case far enough to actually find that out. If 999 of 1000 customers blindly accept that they have signed the EULA and the EULA says screw you you don't get your money back, then the clause already paid for itself. That last case they can simply give up on once it reaches legislation and return the money + pay a small fine. As long as it's less expensive than refunding the other 999, they made a profit. In this case it depends on what the judge would think - part of EU law is that the company has to offer some sort of refund policy. EA has a refund policy. They're now refusing to act on it. That, again, could be interpreted as deceptive behaviour (as someone might have bought a game in confidence, knowing they could return it if it didn't work, only to now find out that the return policy they read and that led to their purchase decision is not actually upheld when they actually want to return the title).

I worked in a telephonic costumer service (for a company hated in my country, that was GREAT) and when your computer refuses to do something, even if the client should get what they want, there's nothing you can do. Also most of the times your superiors are trained to help workers, and not to speak to costumers, that's why you can't put clients in contact with them, that's not their job. Probably one of the worst job ever. I can't be mad at these guys really, I can assure you they wish they could help. I'm so tired of these companies...

I used to work technical support chat for a wireless company, and we had several departments who had overseas chat groups. This is the typical level of support and knowledge that you get when you contract out a Call center overseas and the agents there are getting paid a few dollars (if that) an hour for support. Customer service is almost always an expense and doesn't provide any meaningful revenue to a company, and since contract centers are a fraction of the price of a stateside call center companies generally outsource to them. But what you save in budget, you lose in quality. The contracted agents aren't paid to follow policy or provide good customer service. They are paid to take chats.

I work in customerr service and when i see that some1 is eligible for something even though the system blocks, i go to my supervisor (or when thats not enough, a step higher) to see the problem solved. Being customer support doesn't mean you do only the things the system allows you to. It's your job to be a) friendly and b) to help solve the issue your customer has. edit: And i don't believe for a second that the customer service has no insight into the data the system provides. What a service rep has access to depends on the company involved and how the program they use is set up. It's entirely possible they have no access to specific kinds of information without first being provided the correct "search code" to get to it. If their system is entirely automated (which may or not be the case, though I'd wonder why if it was automated that they'd need customer service to handle refund requests at all) then it's possible that the representative's hands are completely tied and could, at best, transfer them to someone who has wider access or give them another contact number to inquire about the situation. A lot of it depends on the position of the rep and what the company feels they need to do their job. I should know. I work at a call center myself. Certain things we can't help with, but we have resources in some instances that allow us to get a customer to someone who might be able to help. Based on the names of these representatives, their typing mannerisms and slightly broken grammar, it's pretty obvious to me that EA's support has been outsourced to India. In my experience, when the agent is so willing to dismiss a customer and disconnect a call whenever things start going bad, it's because they first started working call centers for the various scam companies that set up shop there. They follow the script very strictly, cannot deviate from it at all, and are encouraged to avoid getting a supervisor involved because that normally cuts into their paycheck more at a scam facility. Technically they're not supposed to hang up either, but when outside of that scam environment they're afforded that "freedom" so they're more likely to drop a call if things aren't working the way the script says it should. They'll take these practices into legit customer service positions and this is what happens and why India has such a bad reputation for providing terrible customer service.

Not that I have anything against overseas customer service reps but just how much initiative do you expect from cheap outsourced 3rd world country workers to have? Not sure how many people are reading this, or how many people care. But i have a story of my own that is eerily similar to the one in the video except mine was with Sony customer support. I'll try and make it short while providing as much information as I can. So I purchased a game for friend for christmas time, specifically Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Eyes of Heaven. I thought, like CDkeys and Humble Bundle, I would receive a game key, and just tell my friend what said game key was, essentially gifting him the game, since Playstation store does not offer a gifting option. Realizing that this was not the case, and instead it just appears on your PSN account for you to download on your PS4, I send my friend the money, and told him to just go ahead and buy it for himself, ruining any sort of surprise factor. All was good and well though, as i figured since i am unable to play the game, I could just get a refund right? How wrong I was to think that, and this is where the story begins. I got in touch with support the night of in fact, no more than 30 minutes after purchasing the game, and without launching the game, as I have stated I don't own a PS4. I talked to a Sony customer support agent, and explained the problem to him. How i thought i would get a game key, and just wanted the game removed from my account and just be given my money back. I was told I could not be given a direct refund, and was offered Playstation Store credit. I told the agent that this wasn't optimal, but i would accept that if its really the only thing they could do. I didn't really fight this much, as it was my fault, and it was christmas eve. The agent was very kind, and actually asked me more about the issue. After which he said he can actually give me a direct refund. I was pretty happy about this, as it was much better than I expected. After this the ticket closed and I waited patiently for them to process it. Screenshot of game purchase - gyazo.com/3cafa875455dfc822f0730737a81782b Screenshot of my first case status message - gyazo.com/4bc11fdc8d3f85b11c833e721c3e1a34 Sadly I do not have logs of the first case, but i will definitely be saving any chat logs from support from now on, as I've learned my lesson. After a few days i was greeted with this email gyazo.com/f19009a43cd354fe94a2c6a684bfc507 As you can imagine, i was a little upset about this, and planned to get in touch with Sony support again soon since surely this was some kind of mistake. I was preoccupied with life events at the time, and getting 15$ back wasn't at the top of my priority list, but I did after about a week or so get in touch with them. And this time i did save the chat logs. Chat logs, posted in order of the conversation as it happened: cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/253611286573613076/533050820950753282/9569ea53acfd823adea9a5ac8e49d087.png cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/253611286573613076/533050854920683521/002af2e9b67da9bad9943ccec60b8645.png cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/253611286573613076/533050878165516288/5e022dfd19641432620da4fb6227ee5c.png cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/253611286573613076/533050900588265482/4f2068e825a0f6260d71d77adeabf484.png cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/253611286573613076/533050920787902486/e047173bcda138f0167c9de73c25f9e6.png cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/253611286573613076/533050941939908609/f6ea113a9157b7c2cfd474c722930cba.png At this point, i just closed the chat, and was not sent an email for my customer service ticket (gee, i wonder why) and have taken no action since then, since they have already lost more than 15$ worth of sales from me, since i was actually going to buy a PS4, but now, unless they want to right their wrongs, i'm not buying any sony product ever again. Also, i apologize for my lack of composure during the chat, but the customer service agent was outright lying to my face, and pretty much ignoring me, posting scripted messages after anything I said, and it was making me pretty annoyed. I really hope at the very least i can spread the word about how poor their customer support is, and that maybe we can all avoid things like this from happening to us in the future by making it known companies are doing this. If people just stopped buying shit based off of cinematic trailers, they'd get scammed significantly less often. We allow the companies to do this, simple as that.

Like I haven't been scammed by a AAA company yet, I literally just look at gameplay, and if there isn't any, I assume it's a scam...because it almost always is. I can't blame the companies at this point, it's YOUR fault, people.

How is it that companys are permitted to set their own terms and conditions for refund policys, this absolutely should be a function of government. Also regarding the "If you continue to use bad language I will terminate the call" thing. Some years ago my daughter went on a trip to Romania, half way through the week I got a call from the Consulate in Romania, apparently my daughters passport had been cancelled by her mum. I'd had to jump through so many hoops to prove that my daughter lived with me, it took many weeks and several 60 mile drives to the passport office and yet a single phone call had cancelled it. I rang the passport office and got soft-flanneled, understandably I think at some point I swore and was told "if you continue to use bad language ya-de-da-de-da". I suggested that since my 15 year old daughter was in a country where she didn't speak the language and in three days all the group was returning to the UK and she would be left alone I had good reason to swear and since this was due to the passport offices incompetence I would, if she was stranded, I would pursue action against them for criminal incompetence. Somehow she got back, but that phrase really stuck in my mind.

Nothing new about EA at this point. Just pure greed. Just keep blasting away at them until gamers finally stop buying their crap if it ever happens.

I was wondering how much of an impact the online community actually makes on the success of AAA+ games. BFV, Fallout 76 and WoW are falling, but how much do we actually control that? How many casual players dont give a shit about youtube/reviews and buy a game because of other reasons?

Casual dont care. I have friends that want to buy BFV when EA drop 50% discount. I told them recent scandal and bs. Manage to stop them, but point is they never check review, didnt do any research and never care. They just bought it cuz its new and it has discount tags.

KZread channels are mostly reactive so there has to be an issue in the first place before making content so there's minimal impact on sales, most AAA publishers seem to be doing a great job of f@cking up there sales themselves. Game sales data for casual players is always hard to find as the data will effect stock prices.

More and more casuals are learning how shitty EA is. Casuals tend to have more hardcore friends or friends of friends. Every year it's getting harder for EA to just continue as is but they haven't got the message yet. Gamers are putting up with less shit in general. We're all tired of it. It's true that a certain kind of casuals, the EA sports players, might keep them afloat for a while if the lootboxes ever get labelled gambling they're totally fucked because they lack absolutely any customer goodwill to fall back on. Their stocks are already imploding and they're taking more and more PUBLIC hits to their reputation all the time thanks to youtubers and other independent media, as well as our increasingly social tendencies online in general.

Pretty sure withholding information regarding an individual's purchase history and what they do with said product (Including timeframes, since they insisted they could see it was over 24hrs) is in violation of the new GDPR rules also. The automated system is simply not compliant with the data protection law

It only is if they actually track it. Also clearly that customer was talking to some outsourced guy in India who was probably barely trained. If he pushes the issue and it catches the attention of anyone higher up at EA, I would be surprised if they actually defend what those Indian reps were saying. Either he'll give up before getting seen, or EA will take the minimum action necessary to put out this potential PR fire.

Either they admit to tracking it by saying that he passed it, or they have to take the customers word when he says he didn't pass it. Guess which is the case?!

I remember refunding a game on steam waaay before them succumbing to EU consumer protection, and after getting educated on EU law they said that even though they didn't have any refund policy in place, they were willing to make an exception for me. That felt condescending as fuck coming from people illegally avoiding EU regulation to do business here, but boy even then they were much better than EA is now. Thanks good guy Steam Support Person.
