E97: Is EU austerity back? With Yanis Varoufakis, Karin De Rigo, Federico Dolce and more!

In a quiet vote last Tuesday, EU lawmakers brought in new rules for public spending… which could have a profound effect on millions in Europe.
The supposed goal of this overhaul was to make the rules clearer and more investment-friendly, with supporters calling them a necessary step towards economic stability.
But critics say the change will force big budget cuts in many EU member states, meaning less money for vital social services and climate action. And, they fear, it will lead Europe back to the dark days of austerity in the 2010s… that decimated living standards for a generation.
DiEM25 is running in the European Elections this June, with a very different idea of how EU economic policy should look. In this live discussion, join our own Yanis Varoufakis with our lead candidates and others, to unpack this vital topic… and have your say!

I’ve started thinking of the EU as the Franco-Prussian empire.

I’m not sure there’s any need to go and slander east Germany like that. Particularly if you’re not trashing the west German nazis who were never removed from government. You know the DDR had the most advanced pro-queer laws the world has ever seen? They did that like sixty years ago. Also the DDR was on the front lines against bourgeois fascism and the social fascistism of ‘euro communism.’ Who didn’t even support the Algerian liberation struggle. Further the DDR was caught up in the mild oppression represented by the Soviet social imperialists with only limited sovereignty. So let’s not trash the DDR and fall into basic bitch anti-communist rhetoric from thirty plus years ago. Now you’ll be calling me a Stalinist, even though there’s objectively no such thing as Stalinism as Stalin was a principled Leninist. But yea I’m a Leninist by way of Walter Rodney. Genocide has only one solution, workers’ revolution! Land back free Palestine, workers stand with the oppressed peoples of the world, unite!

We're from the US. Austerity hit us years ago. Millions of industrial jobs were lost 3 generations ago. . Every State in the US is billions of $$s in debt. Each State has no money to address the dire needs of citizens. The Federal Govt has no money for us. Instead, most of it is going to pay for Wars. Meantime, the private financiers are making untold profits off of that $$$. We have nearly ONE millions people here without jobs. Most jobs are part-time, low wage jobs. The only thing saving us from starvation is to use our credit card to pay astronomical Health Care, Big Insurance, Big Real Estate. Where does that leave us: Millions of $$s in bank loans, credit card companies. Those people are destroying the US Society. Good luck EU/UK populations. And welcome to real Austerity.

Austerity is being implemented as we speak in Finland, how do I as a worker feel it, I have less power to ask for a higher salary, I am fighting with 100 other people for the same job, I pay more tax (increase in VAT) and I get less unemployment benefits.

Austerity is not a 'stupid mistake', it is a means to maintain the Capital Order by coercing workers and citizens into submission. This is what is called 'class warfare'.

Europe is cutting its own legs with austerity while the US and China support their industries with fiscal largesse. European economic growth is lagging every single competitor since 2008 US, China and Japan. It's embarrassing

EU citizens who are resident in Germany can register to vote in Germany until May, 19th. So... from the theoretical point of view the answer is yes, you can - come over and help us win! ;-) Seriously, if you like this content, consider joining DiEM25 in Austria.

What are the new rules for public spending EU lawmakers approved ? With the major EU countries so much indebted I doubt any harsh rules will ever get the nod of the EU Council to become law.
