E46 M3 - Differential V1 vs V2 LSD Unit Part 1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

There were 2 different LSD units in E46 M3, which result in output shaft play on different sides. V1 LSD was on pre 2005 and V2 was on 2005 and later. Run through some differences. This is part 1 of several.
Post 2005 BMWs (like E9x M3, E60 M5, etc), not just post 2005 E46 M3s had the V2 design. This was most likely Giken's attempt at solving the diff clunk and making the LSD unit more stout to handle more power from the later cars. Unsuccessfully.
V1 units are easier to rebuild, have play in the right/passenger side output flange, have the round cutout and clutches on the left half of LSD (side/spider gears on the right half), internals (clutches, side/spider gears) are stacked, once the cover is on the unit is a fixed width which means that once the LSD unit is shimmed in the diff (to provide proper ring to pinion wear pattern) it stays fixed and can be taken out to replace the clutches going forward without requiring a reshimming.
V2 units are a bit more difficult, have play in the left/driver side output flange, have the rectangular cutout and clutches on the right half of LSD (vs side/spider gears on the left half), require extra tools to open the screw on cover, pins for spider gears use c-clips, additional tools are required to recheck breakaway torque (depending on how tight you screw the cover back on), and due to the screw on nature of the cover which changes the stack height - require reshimming every time you want to replace the clutches.

At 8:08, mrgizmo said the output flange plays or backlash is caused by the clutch worn down and created more spacer between the gears. This is not quite right on couple points: 1. All diff have backlash or plays at output flange, both open diff and LSD diff 2. The clutch wear down do not affect the gears back lash, because the whole clutch pack does not press on the gears at all.

Should have clarified, not caused, but it is amplified. The lsd I take apart in following videos has come from 150-200k of original miles and some of then track miles, I didnt show wear on the videos. Remember, when clutches wear, it's not just the friction surfaces that wear, but the inner/outer teeth on the clutches and dog gears also get ground down. That creates more space and introduces more play since the output flange goes through the stack. The spider gears themselves grind down and wear also, which introduces additional space, on top of the originally intended backlash. All of this contributes to additional noisiness of the diff and play in output shafts. While rule of thumb to see which side has the play right vs left on v1 vs v2, I've also seen really worn out diffs where there is really bad play on both sides, and insides of those were in really worn/bad shape.

What I explain starting at minute 1 is what you can do with the car in the air and everything connected - see which side has the play.

I brought all the parts to them, entire diff, clutch pack, bearings, seals, shims, etc, so they just basically swapped in the parts and rebuilt everything. It was around 6-700. Shop was ok opening up a v1 lsd unit but did not want to deal with additional work/tools to open up a v2. They are a generic rear end shop, but they've done e46 diffs before. They can also rebuild a diff for you if you bring them a giken and want that put in.

@@mrgizmo7975 I can understand why they don't want to work on an GKN V2 unit. Its a total nightmare to open that up. I had the tool to open the collar, but I could not open it. Ended up returning the rebuild kit for the GKN V2.

Yeah I've looked at it from the outside, haha, I haven't opened up a v2 I have. I have the tool, but I don't have a vice to stabilize it to unscrew the cap. Not sure when I will get to it.
