40 years, and still one of the best films ever! John Williams knocked it outta the park with this score. One of his best.

On the 11th of June 1982 “E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial” landed from his home planet in cinemas around the globe, making his adventures on earth not only a huge success but one of the most beloved cinematic experiences for old and young, ever. Celebrating E.T.’s 40th birthday we will take a listen to John Williams unmistakable and Academy Award winning score, which not only supports the ongoing actions on screen but becomes the very important communication-element between E.T., his friends and the audience. The score couldn’t be more rich, romantic and magical - a prime example of the composer’s creative peak. Starting this 20-minute presentation is a short snippet showing Spielberg, Williams and the orchestra during the recording process of E.T. It also serves as a testament of the strong (creative) bound between these two men. Many important cues are included here but about 8 minutes are just dedicated to the last (and operatic) minutes of the movie: Written in almost one giant and flawless bow, you hardly could trim it down - you just have to let it flow, just as Williams conducted it, while Spielberg shut down the projector to just let the music happen (and therefore to edit the movie to it afterwards). True magic. Happy birthday, E.T.!

The ending though. Spielberg and Williams, together, made movie magic. I'll admit, I still get choked up.

Tenho 50 anos, mas toda vez que escuto choro muito. Volto pra 1982 e lembro de minha mãe e quando assisti no cinema. Muito emocionante.

I remember seeing 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial' in 1982 as a kid when my family and I were living in South Africa at the time and I loved the movie so much that I saw it four times in the movie theatre (which I never do for any movie these days given the hefty food and ticket prices). The movie also launched the BMX craze and every boy after having seen this movie had to have a shiny new BMX bike (which I later received when we moved back to Canada in 1984, not to mention being given the LP soundtrack by a friend for my birthday which I still have which plays flawlessly). Since 1977, I've been a huge John Williams fan and once again, maestro John Williams knocked it out the park with this fantastic score that conveyed E.T.'s initial terror when being hunted by UFO government agents, then the score mirrored the deep bond of friendship between Elliot and E.T, finally ending with a triumphant escape, as well as a bittersweet departure for E.T. having been rescued by his fellow aliens. It is a truly wonderful and magical score that is as gorgeous today as it was back in 1982. Thanks for sharing this, Soundtrack Fred. :)

So many parts of this suite, make the the hairs on my neck stand to attention. 'The Departure' especially is heartbreaking. If I am ever so lucky to hear this played live I will have tears rolling down my cheeks!

Dear Fred, I cannot believe I miss this posting on June 10th. Is it really 40 years wow. ET is such a delightful film at 79 I still enjoy the film and this score by my favorite film composer this score still touches my soul. Thank you, dear Fred, for the celebration, plus our dear John Williams turned 90 this year and Yahweh blesses him he is still doing what he loves conducting.

8:00 Aside from the wonderful quirkiness of the track 'The Magic of Halloween', I remember getting a kick out of hearing 'Yoda's Theme' when E.T. spotted a kid dressed up as Yoda while he was trick-r-treating with Elliot and the other kids. Naturally, both scores, 'E.T.' and 'The Empire Strikes Back' were composed by John Williams, so it was a treat to hear a composer being able to give an homage to his previous work as a little in-joke for the audience. :)

I was blessed with a 55 year career as a studio singer with several sessions with the Maestro to be grateful for. He is not only a genius but a most humble, approachable man. Thank you, John Williams, for every beautiful note of every Spielberg blockbuster starting with your terrifying score for JAWS 😱

1982 was a great year for scores in Oscars. 1- ET - the best winner in the 80´s. 2- Poltergeist - Amazing score a truly mastepiece 3- Sophie´s Choice - A small score, but very nice 4- Gandhi - A good score, but not Oscar worthy. Nominated because Gandhi was the a best picture nominee. 5- An Officer and a Gentleman - nominated beacuse the song was a major sucess. Instead of this score, Blade Runner was a real contender.

Saw this in the cinema as a 5yr old but now at 45 having watched it on TV I can really appreciate the music score to this film. I knew it must have won an Oscar for Best Original Music before I googled to see if it did.
