One of the best, if not THEE best, movies about the Space Race and birth of NASA. This movie had it all: great plot, great performances, even brilliantly clever VFX. It's all tied together by Bill Conti's beautiful score. It's a great great example of how to weave in other musical works into a score without sounding like plagiarism while using the spirit of that work to make a plot point or to create a feeling. Conti does this and still manages to make something wholey original. "Yaeger and the F104" and "Yaeger's Triumph" are my favorites from this score.

“The Right Stuff” from 1983 is a movie that tells the story of American space travel, from the beginning of supersonic flight to the end of the Mercury program, which was the beginning of the American conquest of space. The movie never takes itself too serious, is really funny at times and stays pretty timeless. The movie won four Academy Awards, including Best Original Score for composer Bill Conti, who could kick out John Williams’ “Return Of The Jedi”. But what great orchestrations it has! Credits for that go to no one less than Angela Morley, who also accompanied several great works of John Williams. Enjoy!

I think this is the best score by Bill Conti, however, some of the most powerful and most beautiful music in the movie was the use of Gustav Holst's "The Planets" (I know this has been commented on) but what about the use of Henry Mancini's great music to "The White Dawn" ???? It is used beautifully for the orbit sequence of John Glenn, tho I know it was not included in this suite or the soundtrack. Phillip Kaufman directed both movies and was wise to use some of Henry Mancini's greatest movie score.

I know Conti more for his disco-beat approach (Rocky, For Your Eyes Only, his TV show themes, etc) in which he excelled. This is not that. He was clearly more comfortable in the "other" world. As for winning the Oscar, the field was pretty weak that year. Even the best parts of Return of the Jedi were re-hashed from the first two SW films (inevitably). One of the better scores, Arthur Rubinstein's War Games, wasn't even nominated. At least it grew beyond whatever temp-track was used!

mikesmovingimages Ahhhh... That’s a beautiful assessment! While I think he is among the greatest film score composers of all times and this piece is just fine, it simply doesn’t compare to his best works. Maybe he was just being playful here, but I get an impression that this is a rather generic hodgepodge of familiar tunes that doesn’t necessarily add up to a cohesive whole. In particular, 2:20 ~ is uncomfortably reminiscent of Holst’s The Planets/Jupiter, and I got a bit turned off around 13:37 ~ because it is clearly a spoof on Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto/Mvmt 1.

I've always had the feeling that The Right Stuff was largely temp-tracked and Bill Conti stuck closely to the temp track in terms of style, and later in the film during John Glenn's flight there are several pieces of actual Holst used - Mars, Jupiter and I think even Neptune makes a brief appearance. Also, Mancini's score for The White Dawn is used in this section, and Conti's adds his own piece 'Daybreak in Space' which is also very similar to part of The White Dawn.
