E lucevan le stelle

Luciano Pavarotti leads the cast for this 1978 Metropolitan Opera production of Puccini's 'Tosca'. James Conlon conducts the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus; Shirley Verrett and Cornell MacNeil co-star.
I do not own this, please go and buy it. The rest of Puccini: Tosca is 100% worth it.

It's not just his voice! God, Luciano was the greatest interpreter! He is really singing and suffering as he was really going to be executed. The best, the greatest, the only one

@@giovannaandolina3956 Enrico Caruso is the best. I love this piece. Listened to it countless times, but Caruso is my favorite. His version feels as if he lived through it and he did in a way. Corelli is a close second for me.

I had the opportunity to hear him in this role, and I believe this same production,, at the Me in 1986, I believe. I'm so lucky. Rats, it was the only time I ever heard Pavarotti sing live but it will stay with me forever. It was the most stunning moment of Opera I have experienced. As a singer I have no words for the degree to which this man inspires me to work harder, listen better, and try to become 1000'th an instrument of music that he was. As an avid opera fan, I have had the privilege to perform and see tons of opera at the Met and elsewhere since then, yet nothing compares. Not even Lise Davisen, whose performance in La Forza Del Destino this season at the Met was extraordinary. Yes, she is the voice of a generation, to be sure. Love her. Still, Pavarotti is king. Listening to this video, I am brought back to that moment in 1986 in an instant. Same sense of wonder, same chills. The opera house was pindrop silent, and then we could not stop cheering and applauding him. Pavarottie wasn't just a voice of his time or even the century - with matchless bel canto technique, true connection to the material and that extraordinary vocal color, Pavarotti was a singer for the ages.
Hearing Pavarotti live in 1970s means you witnessed the greatest voice in the history
He is incomparable, so effortless yet so invested, without compare I doubt there will be another like him, ever

I watched him perform this aria at the end of the Ron Howard documentary "Pavarotti". He knew he was dying by then and to watch him sing this and then turn his back to the audience (which he had never done) was heartbreaking. Placido Domingo was directing the orchestra and when it was done he applauded him.

Yes, I saw the same thing. Placido did say in the film he thought that was truly the end for him. What is so upsetting beyond that is Pavarotti died of pancreatic cancer....as did his father. Why he wasn't screened earlier and routinely is beyond me. Sad....what a loss.

@@merrilynhunt7819 Actually no. I'm a physician and can tell you especially when BOTH parents die of an unusual cancer as pancreatic cancer, they are tests that can be (and should have been) used, albeit imperfectly in this cancer. Although such tests had to have been used in the course well before his death, these still could have provided surveillance. Pancreatic cancer, like many solid tumors, if caught early can be surgically excised with excellent survival. I realize this is in hindsight but there it is nevertheless.

OMG. I had the incredible pleasure of seeing him in this role toward the end of his career. Highlight of my life.
Watching him sing on PBS in 1976 (I was only 6 years old), I instantly fell in love with opera and he became my idol. In my professional singer's opinion, he is the greatest tenor that ever lived. Not only was his range, timbre and interpretations the best, but he sang his entire range so seemingly effortlessly.
L'amore... Grazie Luciano, grazie Puccini❤️
