It's not you, It's me. After only four months with my dream EMTB, the all new Santa Cruz Heckler SL, I decided to sell it and here's why.

I just got an ebike a little over a year ago. Started with an Oso and now I have a Wild, and I still have a v2 Megatower. I have the opposite feelings on the whole thing. I think it's awesome that I can hammer out 20 miles in an hour and 20 minutes, and I still get a damn good workout and have so much fun. I went to the Sedona MTB festival this year and was feeling SO much stronger/better on my Megatower than I ever have riding those trails in the last ~8 years, and I attribute that improvement to putting so many miles on the ebikes because I really haven't been riding the Megatower since I built it last spring. It still looks brand new and has a Fox 38 on it with about 30 miles of riding on it. I'm not selling it, I still love it and really notice the difference in how light it feels handling-wise especially compared to the Oso, but the Wild is also an awesome handling bike ontop of also being a helluva great climber. I even went with the lighter battery and I can still do fairly big rides of 3k+ of elevation no problem. And I'm not taking it easy on the climbs, I leave it in one of the middle modes and I am huffing and puffing by the time I get to the top, but I am not 100% gassed to where I'm miserable and regret it.

Maybe try a full powered e-bike and challenge impossible climbs on it. Kinda feel like you're just into flipping bikes. Maybe no more videos about how you absolutely love the bike and it's game changer and what not. We already know there's going to be a follow-up video in a few months of how you sold it and why you so sold it lol.

But isn’t that human nature? We tend to be passionate about something superficial until another thing comes along… if he wasn’t changing his mind constantly I would question his mental health 😂 Plus, no one is flipping bikes in this market, every time we sell a bike we still lose money or buy something more expensive 🤷‍♂️

After owning an ebike for a season, now I'll never be able to give it up. I could not care less about the climbs, but much rather push faster and faster on the descents. So many laps has helped me progress quickly as a rider. After 2000 vertical meters in a couple of hours my whole body is toasted! I have buddies who are like you and will never give up their XC rockets and they love to climb! To each his own and happy trails!

Aww man I couldn’t disagree with you more on this one. But that might have to do with the differences in our emtbs. I have a full power Ibis Oso, not a mid power assist like your Heckler SL. When I first decided I wanted an emtb, I demoed a bunch. I started thinking I just wanted as close to a regular mtb as possible with a little help on the climbs to get in more miles and laps. Then I rode some full power bikes, and they changed my outlook completely. See the difference with a full power emtb is that it is a different experience completely. Yes, it’s still pedaling two wheels on dirt, but I can do so much more. First, I ride flats and even ups so much faster that they become way more fun and challenging. The flats become near downhill speeds, and on the ups I can hit features, including jumps. This also is increasing my skills quickly riding this fast all the time. Second, I find myself seeking out and attempting crazy climbing challenges that I never would have even thought of attempting on an analog mtb. I’m talking about crazy ledges, super steep, gnarly rooty and rocky stuff- basically moto style technical climbs. Third, I can sesh features so many more times. My latest short vid is an example. Took it out to get comfortable on features with it. I hit the drop and jump line shown on the vid about 50 times. If I had been on my analog I might have had 10 times in me. And I also rode 15 miles singletrack and hit some DJ style jumps that day. Fourth, I ride more. Because I get a meaningful ride of about 10 miles in if I only have an hour, I ride more. In the past I often would bail with that amount of time because it just was too much of a pain in the butt for the limited riding I could get in in an hour. Fifth, is just that I love being fresher for the fun stuff. Fatigue is my biggest enemy- not just in how long or far I can go, but in safety too. When I get fatigued is when the features get dangerous. The ability to get to the top without sucking wind, turn around and drop right in without stopping, and then repeat way more times than I normally could, is the fountain of youth. And I don’t use Turbo- on the Bosch I use either emtb or tour modes. And lastly are the epic rides you can get in on a full power. It’s just insane. What I learned was that, once you add a motor, as long as you have the upper body strength to muscle around a 53 lb bike, the motor makes 5-10 lbs of weight irrelevant. You can build them as big and with as burly components as necessary to absolutely bomb the craziest gnar, and they’ll still rip on flat stuff. And as long as the bike is designed well with proper geometry, linkage and shock tunings, they still get off the ground and rail turns fine. I kid you not when I say the Oso jumps and rails corners as well as my Bronson. It’s funny because I just had my first analog mtb ride this week since buying the Oso. I broke a spoke and the Oso was in the shop so I rode my Bronson. And kinda hated it to be honest. It was so SLOOOOWWWWW. I’m a speed freak, I’ll admit it. I love going fast. You ever get on a highway with noone around and just to see what your car will do get it up to like 110. Then you’re like whoa, I gotta slow down and bring it down to like 75? And you know how freaking slow 75 then feels? Yeah, that’s what it was like. It sucked. For me, full power emtbs have made mountain biking what it always should have been- all fast, all the time. I know this is my perspective, and to each their own. But if you haven’t tried a full power emtb, I encourage you to try one. But I also suggest that when you do, don’t think about it as a mountain bike with a motor. Recalibrate your brain that it is something different. Don’t just ride to the top to get there, have fun doing it. Look for crazy side features and fun lines just like you do on the downs and then go hit em. Rip the flat singletrack as fast as possible, even if it is full of roots or babyheads. Sesh that really fun jump or drop or chute in the middle of the ride a bunch. Whatever you ride though, have fun. 🤙

First I ever heard that! Bahahaha 😂 I love both and will always have both. For me, mtb is all about fun and the ebike is just that. I workout and excersize so mtb for me has nothing to do with excersize. Not to mention, the progression is night and day with an ebike. I get what you're saying, I do love riding my 'regular' bike and each give me satisfaction and fun in different ways. Obviously my ebike gets ridden much more but still take the pedal bike out. As its a completely different riding experience. Totally agree light ebike is the way, love my Rise. If I had to only pick one, it would be my ebike, but lucky enough to have each is definitely the best. That's the beauty of this sport, ride what brings you the most satisfaction, and just enjoy!

Great perspective and I sort of relate. I dislike ebikes personally but also don't care when people ride them. While I tried ebikes just to try them and experience them, I could not get into them because I enjoy the feel of normal bikes and enjoy the fact that I accomplished everything with human power. I personally feel that's what a bicycle is meant to be about... a human powered contraption. So what I can't do 10 laps in 2 hrs. So what I can't get up a 2K ft climb in a few minutes. I am perfectly content and feel fullfilled in my limited 1 - 3 laps or 1 - 2 hr gradual 2k ft climb.

I went through the same issue. I’ve found the stronger I am going up, the stronger I am going down. When you ride analog enough you can do the same amount of ups and downs as the E bikes but it just takes longer. I’m definitely not in a rush to go mountain biking and it kind of defeats the purpose so I don’t mind spending the extra time riding in the hills. Most won’t do barley two ups and downs on an Analog bike because it’s too hard for them so E bike is easier for them to get a longer ride with more ups n downs which equals more workout for “them.” Definitely more workout on analog bike if you can match the elevation of E which isn’t that hard if you ride regularly. E is just too easy for most and the reason for the popularity. Some like the difficulty in sports and some want as easy as possible. Just two different personalities

I can start at my house and go 15 to 30 miles out(with a second battery) and never have to load up my bikes, really opens up riding. But I DiY my downhill bike with a bbshd in 2017 so I only had to invest 1300, 700 Motor and 600 for 2 batteries. Gives me up to 80 miles with 2 batteries. Name brand e-bikes are great but there so over priced and the same enjoyment can be had with a DIY bike.

I could go out and buy an e-bike tomorrow, but right now I’m just not feeling it. And yes, I have tried riding them and agree they are a lot of fun. But if I gotta climb for a half hour to take a single run, then I’m going to do that to earn my turns. It helps me stay in better physical shape and I’ve found the suffering of the climbs is good for my mental health too. For a second bike, I decided on a DH bike instead. This way I can really enjoy bike park days when I am fortunate enough to get them.

If you buy a quality long-travel emtb and don't find it extremely enjoyable, I think you are probably riding for all the wrong reasons. The "SL" stuff is a gimick to sell expensive bikes with cheaper batteries, if you buy an emtb, do yourself a favor and get a full power model with a 700wh battery or more. The little extra weight is overcome by more motor power, you can still turn it down if you want more exercise or more range. The speed limit deletes are worth every penny also.

The other thing with these SL bikes is that they aren’t “enough” for the full emtb experience, but they still are assisting you. So you don’t get the satisfaction/gratification of doing the ride on your own nor do you get the full benefit of doing a crazy about of laps/miles.

What I've learned from that experience is that I absolutely can't wait to get one! I have some local trails that I get gassed out on in under 10 miles. I have asthma so the climbs are awful as I gasp for air and have to rest at the top longer than it takes me to do the climb. But on an eMTB in Bentonville, the battery died (at 25 miles) before I was tired! Knee pain is another issue that I didn't experience on the eMTB. So for me, an eMTB is absolutely the right choice! I know they're not for everyone and that's ok.

I climb a lot of very ROCKY chunky climbs and with the assist I've been able to clean most all trails that I've not been able to before. My real issue is the pedal strikes that I've been experiencing. I jus bought some 155 cranks and that should solve it. I ride an Alchemy Arktos for my regular bike and will most likely keep both. I'm edging towards getting an ebike because on the plus side, sessioning more descents by lapping more would allow me to improve faster. Less wear and tear on the body=ride more, ride longer, ride on days when regular bike rides burned me out the day before. And totally agree about tying up and expensive bike. I found that 29ers and long travel bikes were not as fun for me due to how they muted my trails. And I found myself constantly driving out to find trails that actually justified those types of bikes... And then realized what that truly meant and what kind of trails those were. And I didn't want to start falling down that rabbit hole, especially knowing that a much more skilled rider could potentially rock up to that same trail on an XC bike or aggressive hardtail and still out ride me, ultimately. It's just hard to admit that 'underbiking' is really optimal for MOST of our riding, and then when you do get to those trails or even those single features on a trail that truly use a bigger bike... It feels weird to be owning and riding a bike just for that. Conversely, riding a trail that is ONLY those features is a crazy risky way to live so. Whether its ebike or long travel 29er, I think average trail riding for the average rider is best done on an average trail bike. It just sucks that it isn't necessarily easier/cheaper to rent a bigger bike when you plan for a harder ride (as is common with bike parks and DH/enduro rentals).

I’m really hoping I still want to ride my regular Nomad bike after getting my ebike that I just ordered. I went full ebike hoping I’ll still use my analog bike as well. I’m not a climber and usually my first few climbs is where I’m questioning the fun but then after I get warmed up it’s not too bad but mostly I just love the lighter bike feel going down. And at the end of the ride you do have a lasting euphoric feel from the endorphins, it’s easy to be lazy but the extra work can be rewarding. So I’m hoping that’ll inspire me to still ride the regular bike and then use the full ebike for longer all day adventures or extra laps or before work rides when I’m pressed for time. I thought about the SL route but I think then it wouldn’t be enough for the big days and would instead be more a replacement for my regular bike, also they don’t have a bullit SL so that made it easier to choose lol.

I'm not doing it for fulfilment - it's strictly for fitness, for utility. I also just get incredibly bored by a long, slog of a climb.
