    I have a Carrera Crossfire 2 which I use to commute. I appreciate the suspension because the potholes en route are cavernous and in order to use/access the short & pitiful bike lanes, you have to traverse curbs and stretches of pavement that feel like riding a jackhammer. My dad has a bike that I think you may appreciate. 1990s Colnago Master Piu, fluted columbus steel tubing, original purple and gold livery, build up with Dura Ace 7800. It is quite simply, *stunning*. However it currently in pieces in the loft and I need to find a way to get it back on the road. Edit: should add it's not been left to rust. It's lovingly wrapped up and protected for when it will ride again. We put it up there when we did a load of work to the house but haven't had a chance (or space) to rebuild it yet

    Those old wheels are 27”. It was an odd size and I had trouble getting tires even 20 years ago. However the ones that I could find were 1-1/4” knobby tires which are quite similar to gravel ties now. So they were far ahead of their time. But it also means that a lot of those frames are kinda junk today as the brakes are set up for those wheels and it’s hard to even fit a new 700c set of wheels.

  • @kgramckow

    @kgramckow

    3 ай бұрын

    Yeah I’ve had a couple old 27” wheel frames. Surprisingly I could still buy new 27 tires last year (somewhat terrible hard “commuter” 27/1.25) but yeah that was probably very old stock. Most of them seem to work with 700c tires if you buy long reach brakes, and I had to drill out the brake mounting points to fit the recessed nut type brakes. After spreading the rear triangle from 126mm to 130 you can put new drivetrain stuff on it. Voila, dirt cheap road/urban/lock it up in a city bike.

    A good bike is one that makes you feel like you want to go for a ride because you're confident that it will reliably get you to where you want to go safely and in relative comfort. I see a lot of cheaper bikes that seem to fill these requirements even though they might lack many of the questionable features that are being marketed on top end bikes.

    It is amazing to think that with all the frame and parts and accessory options, new or old or a combination of the two, each of us creates a bike unlike anyone else's and that's no disrespect to owners who chose to keep their high-dollar bikes stock and ready to rock. And thanks for this show, really fun to see what everyone is riding, tho' I do think if a bike is submitted with a love letter about it, at least two relationship points should be added to your judgment of its attributes and aesthetic. 😀

    A dropper is not good for "getting the seat out of the way" it's better for getting the seat in a climbing position/flat straightaway position. If you lower the saddle but rest all your weight on it.....your center of gravity is at the seat. If you slightly lift off the Saddle , your main weight position is at the pedals for handling of the bike. I agree about that suspension, it doesn't do a lot and most times they weight about the same as a Rock Shox Boxxer. You would have more fun with the 200mm downhill fork :)

I use a dropper on my cx commuter for comfy, safer breaks at stop lights and to fit in my gf sedan when i meet her at her job (20 ish miles away) to go out and eat and drive back. It prevents me from having to take off my seatpost everytime and ruining its saved position and alignment. Plus nicer to sit on a bike and warm up out of the parking lot when its slammed, luxury

    Jimmy, before they were banned pros used "spinnachi" bars at the front of the bunch. What do you mean when you say "sick"? Guys, what is it with the tan sidewalls? Whats wrong with "round and black"? Francis, you mean 27inch wheels. Pity you guys don't read the comments you ask for.

    I can only assume that the ‘weird’ almost 700c wheel size is actually 27x11/4”…which was on ALL bikes,pre.1970’s up until 700c took over ,which was the same size as tubulars.😂 Nothing weird there!
