Dude! Thanks for the video. My lady is on her second (replaced first under warranty) and was told there was no fix. Watched your video and cleaned the motor (wasn’t even that dirty) and BAM! Now I can use the $400 replacement value to buy bike parts. Lol

These dryers are SHAIT man. I had 9 from the fuchsia series replaced one every 3 months. The most interesting thing is that I never paid for any of them since the company I used to work for was providing the tools for us to do our work. Well, it just so happened that I quit this job and they gave me the last dryer as a way to compensate for my years of work with them. It just lasted 1 year (miraculously) and now I am asking this guy here to fix it for me. The man behind this company is making tons of money with this still-on research tool. As a hairdresser myself I can guarantee that it does not handle overworking and in-the-home usage type of things, it will do the job but eventually, it will screw up in less time than regular dryers do. So think twice if you want to pay 500 bucks for something that will not last as much as the price suggests only to have a fancy item going for maintenance very often

Its videos and people like this/you that make me keep coming back to KZread even with all the ads. My wife's Dyson Supersonic will not start so I'll be pulling apart today.

probably one of the best most thorough teardowns I've ever seen on a small electronic appliance. I'm an industrial manufacturing engineer countless years of troubleshooting industrial electromechanical systems... nicely done! And you got the thing up and running! that Dyson hair dryer is a pricey hair dryer too. I just bought a used Dyson hair dryer on eBay worked fine except for the medium fan speed kind of sputtered... I was thinking airflow since the high and low speeds work perfect that the medium speed there was some kind of air flow issue sure enough dried hairspray in the stainless steel mesh filter that you couldn't even see I had to use my Jewelers magnifying eyeglasses to actually see it... I had to carefully use acetone on a q-tip to melt and dissolve the hairspray... work like a champ now. cheers

Thanks mate. My Dyson hair dryer broke today. The switch got stuck on. It was always a bit dodgy since I bought it new back in 2017. Followed your video and was able to reseat the rubber button cover. Works properly now. Motor was fairly clean.

Thank you SO much for this video! I had a “broken” one that had the three red flashing lights when turning the power switch ON. I took it apart, expecting to see some dust/hair inside the electric motor or filter. I didn’t notice anything at all. (With it unplugged) I took some canned air and sprayed through both sides of the electric motor, then I took a screwdriver and manually spun the electric motor. Plugged it back up and WOW…it works again! Guess it doesn’t take much for them to fail. This one had a date stamp inside the handle of 2017.

Thanks for the informative video! My dad is an electrical engineer and I’m an ag engineer, so I roped him in to my dyson hairdryer repair attempt. I bought a junk one off ebay. We’re dissecting it and trying to diagnose why it isn’t receiving power to the motor. The power cord has been replaced, the motor has been cleaned out, and now we’re just trying to get into the upper component to examine the wiring and circuits in there. We knew you know what you’re talking about when you said what kind of screwdriver bit you needed 😂 we couldn’t find a T6 in the house since our cellphone repair stuff is MIA. We had to take a trip to harbor freight to get a new set of screwdriver bits. I was hoping that cleaning out the motor would be enough to get it working, but apparently we have to dig a bit deeper.

Thanks for the tutorial~ My wife's hair dryer wasn't working. Single red and single white light kept blinking after it made a weird noise. Took it apart like u showed and after cleaning, it worked. FYI! Its better to pry off the buttons and glue them back on. I manhandled it and really buggered the controls under the buttons by smashing it through the body. Pry off buttons first before removing the body and just glue it back on. There's no other way to cleanly disassemble.

hi. I have a dyson hair dryer and after 1 min working it stops and the red light started to blink. Do you think you can fix it?

Would have loved you to show how you ohmed the switch. That would help in diagnosis without going further into disassembly if the switch is faulty for us that are not as knowledgeable.

Great video, thanks! Getting out the main board unit is fairly easy. 1. Disconnect the mains power cable by removing heatshrink and undoing the tab connectors; these are tight! 2. Jam the switch, coldshot board and motor connector into a cavity into the head. 3. Un-twist the board/heating unit module to release board tabs (two fingers in a glove in the central opening works fine). 4. Slowly pull out board/heating unit/switch module from the head.

I had to repair the board on the latest one so into the head I went. Hi, I also have a second video on a Dyson HD01 repair so I found out the buttons are just glued on. It seems you have to pry them off as gently as possible and then glue them back on. I just used a small flat screwdriver to pry them up. Kinda weird, but that is how it seems on the 2 I have worked on. I could tell someone had glued on these on the first repair, I did not know they were originally glued on as well. Thanks for your comment!

Thanks for doing the exploratory work so I don't have to. That power switch nub doesn't go up to the top of the cut-out on mine and always feels like it's about to accidentally fall down to "off" as I use it, the "cool shot" button is bound to fail if held continuously while maneuvering and the heat button must be pressed five times to get to cool if starting at level one. So, in time all these buttons and sliders will fail. Close to $400 for one luxury and seeing little nagging flaws...

Could the block on the mains cable be a 110v ->220v step up transformer? I noticed that my model (european) does not have that block.

Hi, In my experience so far that is typically the Thermistor or at least something with the temp feedback. The most common cause being the small connector for the thermistor coming slightly unplugged at the board for the thermistor or even the tiny black wires getting pinched or pulled out of the connector. (I believe I have the typical ohm reading for the thermistor on the drawing I shared) After that I would check the heating element to make sure it reads good and hopefully it's one of those things and not something on the board causing the fault. I have one of these that just died. I think the power switch is fine and the motor is fine. I unplugged the power cord and tried to record voltage of it. I don't know if I'm doing it right, but it looks like I'm seeing ~1 volt from it. How can I really check if that power supply really is working right?

I did not have issues with my power cord, so I really did not look at it much. Although I can not say what it should be, I know 1V is not good enough. I was thinking that the cord most likely has the protection and maybe the filtering, but still should have someone around 120V come through. Check for AC and DC just in case it goes through a rectifier, but I doubt it!

I don’t use my dyson frequently but I did just go to use it in the same plug I always use. It turned on like normal and then almost immediately turned off. Power outlet still works for other devices and nothing was tripped in my fuse box. Now it won’t turn on at all even in other usable outlets. What would you think the problem might be?

I did not take this apart to say for certain, but I am pretty sure it is a EMC Filter. So most likely capacitors, inductors/chokes and maybe some Mov's.

I purchased a used one and it doesn't turn on. Would you fix it?

That seems to be the way the HD01 is. I am unsure about the newer versions. Mine has been super glued back on before it seems so I had to use a screwdriver and pry them off. The factory glue may be easier to remove so some hot air may help remove the buttons if factory glued on and then maybe gentle pry without having to pop them off. Best of luck to ya!

I'm having this problem where I can't turn off the Dyson hair dryer's power (sliding to 0). The only way to power it off right now is to unplug the power plug from the outlet, any ideas on what could be the cause of this?

Well it sounds like the issue is in the slide power switch. Either the button is not physically sliding the switch to off position or the switch has failed shorted?

Great work & your video inspires me to look into my HD01 👍 I narrow down my issue to the circuit board and that's where I stop b/c I don't want to invest more time to it. However, I discover something truly strange & scary and your extensive electronic knowledge can for sure shed some light: You notice the spade connector where 120V hot/neutral 14 AWG connect into the much skinnier black/white wire (my guess is 20 AWG) at 15:10? This hair dryer is rated at 1600 watts and how can Dyson use 20 AWG to deliver 1600 watts? In addition, the internal heating elements are just as skinny. Maybe I am missing something?

It's very interesting. These have Teflon coated wire also called TFE insulated wire and it's hard to believe these wire can withstand up to 25A at room temp. It can even handle up to 12A or so at 250⁰C. It is interesting how much insulation helps current rating for sure. Thanks for your comment!

I have not by any means figured out the best way to get parts for these. Parts are rare and high. It's a long shot, but check on eBay for a bit and see if by luck one shows up. Saved searchs helps alot. The only other place that I know of that may have it is "Parts Warehouse"?

Not sure exactly. I have only bought the US version. The 120V vs. 240V is a huge difference in this case. I would think that would mean a tremendous amount of difference from fan motor, heating element and power supply input side for electronic controls as well.

I have never used a replacement from Ali express to say. This is a 2 wire motor and not 3 wire? Is it truly backwards and air is sucked from the front and pushed out of the filter area of the handle?

My wife’s just stopped working now tripped fuse, reset all many times, switched outlets, cleaned filters, even removed it and cleaned it. No lights anywhere on unit too. Help!

I try to share what I learn to help if it can. I have not worked on anymore of these and I don't have a repair service. The bad thing is, it is nearly impossible to find parts for these without buying a broken one like I did. Sorry, I wish I had time. What kind of condition is the cable in? Often these cables get kinked when people wrap the cable around them before storage. Could there be a short internal to it?

So there was nothing electrically wrong? Just the broken switch?

I believe on mine that is correct. Hair was caught up on the blower as well as the switch not being able to push forward enough, seemed simple but it still works today, no issues. I was about to try and replace switch, them realized it worked once I had enough forward movement!

Mine doesn’t produce any heat. It just blows cold air. Any suggestions?

I have not had to go that far yet, but to get to that, you will have to get into the head of it. I could see the coiled heating element and the control board in the head, they did not make it easy to get to. I would think it would also be a thermal fuse as well.

There is another common failure mode, where it would turn on for a second and turn off immediately with 3 red lights blinking, which is a self-diagnostics logic shutting the dryer down. What's really annoying is it is intermittent and sometimes just fixes on its own. My broken dryer arrived from ebay 'fixed', perhaps due to a lousy packaging, but now acts up again. I cant believe that much hair can get inside the motor. My wife's stop working. The white light just blinked. After watch how dirty the motor was I banged it upside down on the carpet a couple times. Plugged it back in and it turn on. Which leaves me to believe it's a dirty motor causing it. And banging it on the ground loosen it up enough. I watched another video and it seems impossible to remove the sleeve without ripping the buttons off. We will see how long it last this time and then maybe take it apart and clean the motor.

That could be a real one but based off how the power supply looked it might be fake. Either it’s build in a factory out of the us or it’s not real. I’d recommend looking up a guide on how to check it they are fake because most that randomly stop working are fake and the power supply is a red flag.

I'm no Dyson expert. I bought 2 broken ones a few months apart a few years ago just to do a couple of repair videos and learn more about them. I was under the impression it was in fact the Dyson that comes with the EMI Filter in the cord. This is most likely for electronics interference etc. So it's a added feature not something typically added by the knock off design in my opinion. I am not sure, but it's very well made as in Dyson and not cheaply made.
