Dyson Gen5detect stick vacuum review

Ғылым және технология

Dyson is on a roll with new products… its latest stick vac is the Dyson Gen5detect. With a more colourful new look, the same basic design with a few updates, plus laser targeting… you could call this the X-Wing fighter of vacuums…
I recently got my hands on one of these vacuums to test and review in my home.

What is Dyson Gen5detect?
Dyson’s Gen5detect is a compact, cordless, laser-sighted stick vacuum that’s designed to be a more light and portable option, since it’s smaller than the Gen5 OUtsize. This version weighs about 7 pounds and is made for “heavy duty performance”, according to Dyson.
It has a modestly sized dustbin and comes with several cleaning heads, which we’ll get to, and it has a removeable rechargeable battery with up to 60 minutes of runtime.
Comparing it to the V12 Slim, you can see the Gen5detect is a bit bigger overall.
What’s in the box?
In the box you get a lot of attachments; there’s the main vacuum handle with integrated dustbin and built in lifetime washable HEPA filter, plus a small screen is also built into the back to show a battery countdown timer, and different cleaning modes as well as a list of particles being sucked into the filter, similar to Dyson’s purifiers.
There are three main cleaning heads, and several accessories:
Detangling Motorbar cleaning head
You could call this the main vacuum head, and while it’s the same size in width as the other head (below) it’s a bit bigger in diameter. It’s able to automatically adjust power on different floor types, meaning you can deep clean between carpet and hard floor without having to change accessories. Plus it has special detangling properties. You’ll see what are known as Hair Removal Vanes that from my previous experience reviewing Dyson vacuums, are very effective at combing any hair out of the brushes.
Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head
If Jarjar Binks got on your nerves, maybe George Lucas could adopt Laser Slim Fluffy into the Star Wars Universe. With its Astronaut-meets-puppy dog name, this brush sounds fun to use, and it is, because it has the lasers.
The brush is padded and fluffy, and it’s made specifically for wood and tile floors, because those furry rollers can trap finer particles of dust thanks thanks in part to the fluff and anti-static fibres.
Let’s get to the lasers…When powered on, the head shoots out a horizontal green laser light that shines across floors, and reflects off particles so you can see them better. More on how this works in a minute…
Hair screw tool
The hair screw tool is made for homes with pets and long haired folks. The small cone-shaped brush bar not only better picks up long hair or pet hair, but its shape is made to prevent hair, thread, and fibres from wrapping around the roller and creating tangles. Hair will magically work its way off the brush and into the dustbin.
Hidden Crevice tool and brush
A very cool new feature of this vacuum is the hidden crevice tool with brush. Dyson has built the crevice tool to live inside the extension tube so it's always with you. You just press the release button on the tube and slide the tube off. This is actually a pretty genius design trick and it means one less accessory to misplace.
Other attachments
Dyson includes other attachments and accessories including a Combination Tool with brush and some mounting hardware.
All the parts (including the filter) are washable
Battery life and charging
The battery life on this vacuum is pretty good; you should get 70 minutes of run time on a charge (up from the V12’s 60 minutes). Fully charging one of the batteries will take a lengthy 4.5 hours, and that hasn’t been improved on since the V12.
Your battery life is displayed on the rear screen when the vacuum is running.
Continuous power button
Dyson has been playing around with its power button configuration. While earlier models used a trigger that you needed to pull and hold the entire time you’re cleaning, newer models are using a continuous power button.
I love the idea of continuous power since it does make vacuuming easier, but I don’t like the new location of the button or its size. It’s a small button on the very back of the vacuum. Dyson moved it from the V12 Slim, where it was larger and on the side of the bin. It’s still it’s awkward to push, and you need another hand to engage it. I’m still waiting for a simple locking trigger.

Dysons are expensive because there is no competition that's even close to their cordless vacuums, not even in the same universe, so Dyson can charge ridiculous prices since they know they'll get it.

Great timing - this is on sale at a very good Black Friday price here in Australia right now, so I’m ordering it. The buy-direct from Dyson includes all the accessories that aren’t available as a bundle in the shops here, so I’ll be buying online.

4 hours to charge is not half a day. I don’t understand that people say that is takes so long to charge. I have it and I am fine with 4 hours to charge after I vacuum all my house.

I love the Star Wars references! So clever and funny yet seamless! The “pew pew pew” and description of the laser fluffy brush had me laughing out loud. Haha 😂 Thanks! :) It’s funny to me how people’s opinions are all over the map about the on/off button! 🤷‍♀️ 😄 I personally don’t care as long as it works, and isn’t a trigger. 😁 Also, I’ve done a ridiculous amount of research, and I almost got the v15 instead of the Gen5 because of some well-meaning yet misinformed reviews. The suction is incredible! The “gates” on the front of the motorbar are perfect and made to help those who have the “too much suction” issue (certain deep carpets and thin area rugs especially). You just open up the gates part of the way or all the way, and then the overflow of suction is let out and it doesn’t have a problem. I’ve seen it demonstrated, so I’m getting a Gen5 soon and can’t wait! And for me, probably the most important feature is the INCREDIBLE filter! Watch Vacuum Facts review. He’s not a nice person in many things he says, but he’s so right about explaining the incredible importance of this new Gen5 filter (the blue filter will also be available for v15 on Dyson.com in a couple weeks!). The new filter even filters out mycotoxins and viruses!! That’s incredible!! Mold toxicity is horrendous, and I never knew how bad until it happened to me. Long story short: mycotoxins are potent neurotoxins that come off toxic mold. So when you’re vacuuming… you’re often inhaling these and other dangerous, invisible things, because the suction blows it back into the air. So it’s actually a huge problem. Trust me, I almost died from mold toxicity. You don’t want to mess with mycotoxins! Haha So anyway, thank you for the fun review! And I still can’t believe I’m such a Dyson fan now… I always thought the hype was crazy… but I have the V12, and it’s no hype! I just need the new filter, power, etc of the Gen5. But my v12 actually makes vacuuming fun! Haha So I’m still a fan of Shark, but the incredible attachments (can’t wait to get the grooming kit on Dyson.com!! My golden retriever sheds constantly! Lol) and value and no monetary upkeep is just incredible! So I’m a Dyson convert! Haha 😄

Thanks for the video. Do you now how much the rechargeable batteries cost, I would hate to be in the middle of vacuuming and have to wait 4 hours to charge. Also is the 70 mins of run time on the lowest suction? Because usually no one uses the lowest suction. What are the runtimes for the other suction settings?

Hello, I bought a vacuum cleaner online and I was disappointed; it didn't pick up dirt well. I relied on ads and presentations like yours. Please conduct more realistic tests. Any vacuum cleaner can handle scattered flakes and chips. Do more tests on carpets with crushed and ingrained dirt. Thx

QUESTION ALL ? is the power button a game changer in the V12 and Gen5 or is the trigger fine and no issue in the V15.....thats why i am trying to rack my brain and pick between the three,,,.....2200 sq ft house total...mostly hardwood with various area rugs and one room has carpet....want something strong enough to clean car also.....thx for your review.....cheers from Canada

Great question. I do find that having a power button that locks on is a huge help, particularly when cleaning larger spaces. If you have to hold the trigger the whole time, your arms get very fatigued quickly. While I have complained in previous reviews about the awkward location of the dedicated power on button, it’s still a better option than a pull to hold trigger.

Where does this fit relative to the V15? Does the "family" go V12, Gen5detect, then V15? We tend to find the V15 is a victim of its own efficiency. Very effective suction means lots of full dust containers per room / trips to the bin. But a bigger dust container would make it ungainly.
