It would be kind of Dyson to include a spare battery and filter for the cost of the thing.

Thanks for review I agree with what your saying. I have owned the gen5 for about 1 month and while I find it amazing, if I had a v11 or newer I wouldn’t upgrade. The weight was really noticeable at first but I have become used to it now. This is my first Dyson so it’s been a bit of an eye opener for me coming from cheaper cordless vacs. Most of my flooring is tile so I find the laser light extremely useful. Wish it came with the detail cleaning kit but overall still happy as I purchased it in Australia on a 35% sale

The fact that it still cannot handle a softer carpet on the normal setting is a dealbreaker for me. I do not trust a stick vacuum to be deep cleaning at that power level. If I wanted something for quicker cleanings, I would get something far cheaper, like a Shark, which is half the price. I know that most people don’t have plush pile carpets, but I just absolutely love the feeling of them on my feet on a cold winter morning.

I disagree. I do own a Shark stick vacuum and while the brush roll does sound like it’s doing a lot and grooms the carpet very nicely, if I go over it again with my main vacuum, I can get the same amount out or more. Which means that the stick is missing A LOT. I personally think that stick vacuums still have a way to go before replacing full-sized vacuums. They will get there, but they aren’t there yet. At least in my opinion. Mind you, the Shark is the only modern stick vacuum I have experience with, so I can’t speak on the others, but the Sharks that I have just don’t cut it.

Roger was being tongue in cheek when he said that at 749 pounds it was an investment. We all know that if what is available in corded/mains powered bagged machines from manufacturers like Miele, Sebo, Lindhaus and real premium makes for 749 and none of these machines like the one being reviewed looks like an investment.

Well, my recently departed mother spent the last two years pushing round this cordless Goblin thing she got for £60 in Asda, and while it felt ever bit as cheap as the price, it didn't half seem to pick a lot up when you saw how much was in the dust tank. She couldn't manage a mains cleaner any more. But like a lot of women of her generation, she knew how to clean properly, and her Goblin was seen by her as nothing more than a means of "getting the bits up", so it was my job to get her trusty Hoover Telios out of the wardrobe every fortnight to clean all the edges of the room thoroughly, pulling out furniture, giving the stairs a really good do, before using her much newer Dyson Small Ball upright on the main expanses of carpet. Now that she'd gone, I'm having to do all the cleaning (though I am teaching my dad what he needs to do daily), so I don't know if the Goblin gets used, because even when it's not cleaning day I find myself using the Dyson for a "run round" when I am visiting. It's really very good as an upright (totally useless with the hose, but mum didn't buy it for the hose), so very quiet and light to carry, although I have to use it on the medium suction setting, because on full it sticks to the carpet and can't be moved. My best friend has a hand-held Gtech, and cordless shark liftaway, but I cannot get used to the dead weight in the middle of the pole on the Shark - it has a mind of its own and swings about left to right. I like the weight on the floor, because not only do I find it balanced, I really think it helps with the cleaning performance by keeping the head down. The cordless cleaners I've used all seem ever so floppy. The Gtech is even worse, although I don't dislike the upright Gtechs at all. Maybe it's because it isn't trying to be all things to all people.

The carpet brush didn't want to rotate because, unfortunately, Dyson made a mistake. Compared to the V15, the vacuum force in the latest Gen 5 has been increased, i.e. the vacuum cleaner sucks the carpet with greater force, but the power of the electric brush motor has not been increased - it is exactly the same as in the case of the V15. Therefore, when vacuuming Gen 5 on most carpets on which the V15 electric brush worked successfully with completely closed gaps, even in the Boost mode in Gen 5, you have to open the gaps or reduce the power so that the electric brush roller does not stop completely, which unfortunately also reduces the cleaning efficiency. Dyson used a more powerful motor in the vacuum cleaner, the power of which cannot be used much due to the weak electric brush. As a side note, this vacuum cleaner should have two buttons. One under the finger, as always, and the other on the housing. The one under the thumb would only work when pressed, and the one on the housing would turn on the vacuum cleaner permanently, even if the button under the finger was not pressed. A vacuum cleaner of this class and costing so much should have such a solution.

Here's my question: is it better to have a cleaner with a beam of light so you can see the dirt and collect it, or is it better to have a cleaner that you trust to clean reasonably well? Whenever I've used a vacuum cleaner with a headlamp (and it's been a good many years now) I didn't think of the headlamp bringing the dirt into view, more that it helped me to see where I was going, to not ram the cleaner into furniture legs, and to make sure I'd covered all the surface area, particularly under tables etc. No vacuum cleaner is ever going to totally clean a carpet, goodness knows you can clean with one and then use another and find it collected something else. You have to have a cut off point. When it comes to cleaning floors, if it looks clean then it is clean enough for me, because for a fact I struggle to get down to floor level these days, thanks to my creaky knees, so it's not as if I'm going to inhale the carpet or catch a virus off a hard floor when my head is so far from the surface at all times. I am much more fastidious about what I eat off and food prep surfaces, as well as keeping my bedding (especially pillowcases) clean, as these are much closer to my face than the floor is.

@@Deb.-. Funny you say that, because 12 years ago I did some in-store demonstration work for Dyson, and all through my training it was pounded into our heads that Dyson was all about value and how they don't make their money from consumables. Well that might have been alright were it not for the fact that the upright cleaners I was selling had the new (new for the time) clip-fit tools, as did the majority of the cylinders, meaning the extra tools people had already invested in would not fit the new cleaners. As I recall, the previous cylinder cleaners has already undergone numerous different styles of fitting by then. FYI, I am still waiting for a member of the training team to tell me exactly why the City model isn't suitable for larger homes. "It's designed for small spaces" I was told, and repeat to fade. That was the stock answer - no one could tell me what exactly the consequences of using it in a large home would be. I suspect the motor wouldn't have coped with running for longer periods, but no one would ever admit to that. Indeed that's what I remember most about Dyson - people being told stuff and then repeating it parrot fashion, but never stopping to think how it applied to the real world.

The only vacuum that deserves a $850.00 price tag is a SEBO X7 boost. That's a lot of money for a handheld vac with a battery. I like direct air machines and simple by pass bagged uprights. That's it! Dyson's are cool but that's as far as it goes. I have serviced many stick Vaca and ruined a couple power heads. Thankfully they break! We had some old heads left over. With inflation now at 16% in the US I think having a high quality unit is a must! I love my job but soon I know I am gonna have to give it up they are purposely making this stuff so hard to fix it's getting old. Thanks for your videos- W
