Dyslexia in Higher Education | PhD Student

Hey wonderful humans!
Between 5th - 11th October is Dyslexic Awareness Week and as someone with dyslexic I thought I would share my experience of being dyslexic in higher education.
---------------
My name's Lucy and I'm a humanities student focusing on queer romance novels of 21st century, so obviously this won't be the same as science people. Also everything I say is my own opinion! If you have any questions about PhD life or studying at UoB feel free to leave a comment or contact me on social media.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience, I found it very insightful and inspiring. I am currently doing my dissertation on experiences of navigating HE for students with dyslexia! To break down the negative stereotypes that are commonly associated with dyslexia we need more people like you who have the confidence to talk about your personal experiance in a transparent and coherent way. Very good job!!

Hey1 Great video! I graduated in July with.a BA Hons Theatre Performance and Production (Top-up) Degree. I also have dyslexia and dyspraxia. I had been performing from the womb and can't see myself doing anything else. Prior to this, I studied at Lamda (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) to be one of their Drama workshop leaders, that was how I got accepted into my current degree. While I was at university, I created my own workshop idea called the 'Neuroclusive' workshop, which is predominantly acting, but it teaches about memorisation and uses skills that could be used in Life. Because I have been an actor before this, I picked so many tips and things and its now been made into a workshop through the help of my university degree, So yep! IT CAN BE DONE!! We can show those neurotypicals, how it's done!!

Thank you for sharing this helpful video! I am also a research student studying at the university of Birmingham now. It is very useful to see that how you communicate with supervisors. That is a really good point!

Hey! Very interesting video, thanks. I am autistic (diagnosed recently at 33), and trying to write a book on it. A lot of what you say about dyslexia can be applied to autism. I guess they are like close cousins or something. Within the differently wired brain community :)

Definitely! I have a friend who is autistic and we often compare the two and the similarities between them :)

I just finished my MSc and am moving on to my PhD this month. I am using an iPad at the moment and it has some great accessibility features such as reading PDF's allowed. I use my IPad with the apple pencil and I can quickly highlight sections of a PDF that I can refer back to later and I colour code the highlights depending on what I am highlighting and what I will use it for when I refer back. I know these things are a bit pricy but honestly, the connectivity that apple has across its devices makes my life in college so much easier. I also have Grammarly pro installed on all my devices which makes my writing so much better and quickly picks up on any mistakes I have.

Ah amazing! Honestly if you’ve found things that work for you that is the best thing. I love colour coding and also used grammarly pro during my MSc :)

I'm a dyslexic/dyscalculic. I face more bigotry from my ASD diagnoses than my dyslexia. I have perfect pitch and I play 6 instruments, but being talked down to me is insulting.

Just about to start at Edinburgh uni, but because it's an part time access course I am not eligible for dsa, I have just spent a fortune on a good laptop, I have found the support so far OK but then I haven't started yet but I have found out because I haven't got a formal diagnosis of dyslexia from school even tho i told them I was in a learning support for all of primary school and got xtra time, scrib and reader, I had a uni screening and got told I will have a meeting for adjustments only, what sort of adjustment should I expect, did you get any software from uni to use on your own laptop, your dyslexia is very similar to mine, it freshing to hear I not alone

You are definitely not alone and I hope you have a better experience at Edinburgh with your dyslexia than I did! In terms of the adjustments I got - I'll be honest it was really nothing. I didn't get any software or hardware and I was told they didn't take into account dyslexia when marking coursework etc as they believed they gave students enough time to manage that themselves. I was given a proof reader one time, but mainly because I kicked up a fuss as in general they didn't deem my dyslexia severe enough to warrant one for every piece of coursework. Sorry I don't have more positive news and I really hope they've made some changes the last 3/4 years!
