Dyslexia and Reading Comprehension Difficulties - Dyslexia Connect

For children with dyslexia, what are the main causes of reading comprehension difficulties? Learn more about dyslexia and our online dyslexia tutoring and treatment program at www.dyslexiaconnect.com . Please subscribe to our channel!
For dyslexic students, reading comprehension issues are very common. Many students with dyslexia struggle with reading comprehension, even after they receive dyslexia tutoring and their reading fluency improves. What are the causes of these difficulties?
One of the primary causes of comprehension difficulty for dyslexics is poor reading accuracy. Many dyslexic students have trouble reading a sentence without adding extra words, forgetting words, misreading words, or many other difficulties that are symptoms of dyslexia. As a result, they simply do not have a good sense of what they are reading, because they are not reading the sentences with 100% accuracy. To give you an example of how much trouble this can cause for a dyslexic, imagine they are reading with about 80% reading accuracy. This will cause trouble in single sentences and cause them to misunderstand many of them. When we expand this level of accuracy to the entire passage they are reading, these errors will pile up, and they will have a very difficult time understanding what they have read.
Another cause of reading comprehension difficulty for dyslexic students is poor vocabulary knowledge. Many dyslexics struggle with vocabulary, because they have simply not had the chance to acquire vocabulary while reading due to their reading difficulties. A dyslexic student may have trouble with seemingly basic vocabulary as a result of this. Without a proper foundation of vocabulary, the dyslexic student may not understand what they are reading, simply because they do not understand many of the words.
Another cause of reading comprehension difficulty may be that the dyslexic student is not reading for content. For a dyslexic who has not received dyslexia tutoring or dyslexia treatment, reading is often an exhausting, laborious process, and it requires all of their focus to simply decode the words. As a result, they may get to the end of a passage that they have read, and have little to no idea of the content of that passage.
Finally, reading anxiety may also be causing a student with dyslexia to have trouble with reading comprehension. For many dyslexics, reading is something that causes fear of failure, and reminds them of many failures in the past. This anxiety can cause them to be nervous when they are reading, and not absorb the content.
In the next video, I will discuss ways that these dyslexia comprehension problems can be addressed.

I came here because of my bff, she recommended me this video... I'm pretty good at English, but I have a problem that, when reading big texts, I tend to lose focus on what I'm reading, and sometimes I have to re-read paragraphs, and sometimes after reading I tend to forget easily what I just read... and this last part also happens when talking with people, I have to try to stay focus to not forget what they are telling me... I have this problem on my native language and English too... I don't know if this is because of dyslexia, I mean I don't know if I have dyslexia, at least I don't think so, but maybe I believe that because I actually may not know what dyslexia is really about... Although thinking about it, lately I've noticed that I use to skip words when typing, sending texts, etc... like "wait, I remember typing that word, why isn't it there?"... 🤔

When I read a paragraph or a sentence I have to repeat the whole thing to comprehend it. I mispronounce words and I forget so very often. I also find it hard to focus. For example the word rainbow, Ill say the word as rainber LOL. I find this very annoying. I’m only 11 and I don’t know if I am dyslexic. I ALSO WAS GETTING FRUSTRATED TYPING THIS PARAGRAPH !

There are other ways of getting knowledge without having to read. You can use audio-books while working out or playing video-games. Text-reader-programs have improved dramatically over the years, you can use them to read wikipédia where there's endless knowledge. You could try go out and get knowledge from the real world. You could talk to people with experience in the field of study you are interested in etc. There are always options and it's never as black and white as some people portray it to be.

Hello Peter. I just saw your entire video. But still I want to confirm if i have this problem and on what level i have this problem. I can write and read well, but whatever I just read especially a paragraph and if I read the paragraph again i feel like I am reading a new paragraph. Because I didn't understand anything at all. While reading if I try to understand it at the same time, I get so much tired and bored that I keep the book down immediately. And also I less understand maths. I can calculate small single digit numbers using addition and subtraction but not larger digit numbers. So please tell me at what level I have dyslexia ????????

+Dhurin Amin Hi, Dhurin. Thanks for your question. The difficulties that you describe are very typical of dyslexia. To determine which degree of dyslexia that you have, it would be necessary to have an evaluation. Where do you live? Once I know that, I can probably suggest some resources.

HI. I'm 20 and recently got tested for dyslexia because I was struggling in classes and it runs in my family. I'm not dyslexic but I have a "reading comprehension disability". Making it almost impossible for me to recall things I read but I'm an excellent reader. Do you have any videos or recommendations about those kind of learning disabilities? I'd like to learn more but I can only seem to find stuff on dyslexia. Thanks!(:

This is just superb, I've been looking for "how can i find out my child's reading level?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Eanmanter Straightforward Equalizer - (do a search on google ) ? It is an awesome exclusive guide for discovering how to teach your child to read minus the hard work. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my partner got great success with it.

I'm not sure that I have dyslexia but I do seem to be having problems with reading comprehension. It's hard to describe: I can read the text aloud, even fluently, but sometimes it's like I'm not registering the meaning of what I'm reading, or I am registering it but only vaguely. Also, even when I understand what I've read, if I was asked to answer questions about the text, I'd only be able to give general answers; I won't able to recall the details. Are these symptoms characteristic of any disorder? It's hard for me to describe these symptoms exactly, so I worry that I won't be able to get an accurate diagnosis.
