That's just "opinions'. I do see living organisms as biological machines that basically operate on physics and chemistry. If 'life" was so special, medicines wouldn't work, we would net need exercice and healthy food to keep the "machine" in good shape. No matter how closely and carefully you look, you won't find a single particle of Life. You will find protons, neutrons, their constituants, their rules, that's all.

@a.randomjack6661 Excuse me, but what is your point? You don't even break it down to the basics. Neutrons and protons are not fundamental particles. Quarks are. And fundamental four forces do not make matter. Also, it is still debatable if gravity is a force at all, so there may be only three forces. But anyway. How is any of this related to the definition of life?

@@TheUglyGnome Life is just a more complex form of organized matter, 'Life" is a "consequence" a "process", not an ingredient. People get easily confused qith 3 flavors of quarks, or why it is when you turn a quark into energy, a new quark appears. Anyhoo, I forgot most of it. As for gravity, it's still listed as one of the four forces. It does modify spacetime, but we don't know how. It contracts spacetime and generates waves, isn't it like sort of a force?

Beautiful summary of how the carbon system interacts with so many aspects of the planet! Carbon traps heat, clouds and ice deflect heat, oceans and ocean life absorb carbon, as do forests and subsequently: all of life. The carbon amount in the atmosphere has been balanced such that life was able to flourish. Like a spinning top gently spinning with minor fluctuations. And while the amount has doubled and halved over the eons, the process has ever been gradual enough to allow the systems to re-balance to states that remained conducive to life. Events like volcano eruptions will temporarily rock the top, and the existing systems will re-balance the temporary spike, because they have the capacity to do so. If the amount of carbon suddenly increases, and keeps increasing without cease, then the systems that balance the levels will become saturated. Simultaneous disruptions to those systems - such as the centuries of deforestation and centuries of over-fishing the oceans - will reduce the saturation limit of the balancing systems, until finally... the spinning top starts rocking out of balance and finally falls over. And a spinning top cannot put itself back up. Once the cycle is broken, an entirely new cycle will start with the resources and systems that remain. Whether that cycle develops into a new balance, or spirals out of control, is anyone's guess for now. But it is very unlikely that such a new system will be conducive to life as we know it. _"What is 1 degree Celsius anyway?",_ one might ask. It seems like such a small amount. To raise the temperature of the atmosphere by 1 degree Celsius _globally,_ an amount of energy equivalent to 80.000 - 100.000 nuclear bombs is required (give or take), which is about one such bomb per visitor of our largest arena's. And we've raised the global temperature by 2 degrees Celsius, so far. The one-two degrees Celsius might not seem much by itself, but the vast amounts of energy required to get it that much warmer on a planetary scale are enough to feed ever more powerful catastrophic meteorological events, as well as their frequency of occurring. I believe that we've had an appetizer of such destructive power in the past two or so decades. The numbers by themselves might not seem to make much difference or sense, but understanding the grander scale and especially the limits of the systems that keep our living conditions in check is ever crucial for our continued survival, and the newborns of today will feel already the consequences throughout their lifetimes.

Isn't it ironic that you talk about the solar system "goldie zone" where water stays liquid when the Earth got completely covered in ice at least 3 times. How can you change subject from an extreme to the other and still ranting about climate change?
