Dymond Software (Roger Dymond and his lost games)

Ойындар

Life was difficult for Roger Dymond as he learned to live with Asperger Syndrome. Then the 1980's home computer era arrived and opened up a whole new world of possibilities for Roger. Join me as I learn about this pioneer of ZX Spectrum games programming who, with the help of his parents, started his own mail order games enterprise.

Such a shame a larger software house didn’t take Roger under their wing. He obviously had a lot of skill and determination. Great video.

I hope you enjoy this video and share it widely to raise as much money for charity as possible in Roger's name. I'm still exploring some other tapes Josie sent to me; a couple of C60's with lots of programs on them. One programme I found is a Bar Stock Taking programme Roger was making on the Spectrum in 1985, and another details financial records for Dymond Software for the months of September to December 1982. The finance records are fascinating as they list sales of games, along with the cost of blank tapes, photocopying, postage, advertising etc. The advertising bill for September 1982 was £115 so Josie was spot on with remembering it cost "around £100"!

First of all, and most importantly, THANK YOU for retrieving the lost software. It always gives me great pleasure to see a MIA title be retrieved, or a new item be discovered and archived online, and both events have occurred here. Secondly, it’d have been interesting to hear more about Roger’s involvement with Acorn computers, as the ‘memorial’ photo of him clearly shows him sitting at an Archimedes, with a copy of Beebug’s Ovation DTP package clearly on display. It’d be interesting to know whether Roger went on to write any RISC OS software during this period of his life. I find it easy to relate to Roger’s story, as I too had a rotten time at school (though I didn’t have Asperger’s), and my own first computers were a ZX81 and then a Spectrum. Slightly later I was lucky enough to also have a BBC Micro (as well as the Spectrum - I loved both, despite their being so different). Later, I became heavily involved in the RISC OS world. Unlike Roger, I didn’t publish any home grown efforts for the Spectrum, but I did publish things I’d written for RISC OS. And I even worked for Beebug for a few years, and had a fair bit to do with the author of Ovation!

I too would like to know more about what Roger did later but unless a previous colleague steps forward with information I couldn't discover anything. It's sad he's not around to tell his own story.

I guess the world is full of relatively unknown contributions by some very talented people like Roger, so it's good to see another little bit of history brought to life. It's easy to forget that someone has put many, many hours off their lives, and probably their heart and soul in to such projects. Thanks to Josephine for donating his Speccy and software to you, and to allow his software to have a new audience.

To be that prolific in writing software, Roger must have spent many many hours coding. He had a great eye for detail too because I only spotted a very minor "bug" on one of the compendium games. We need to celebrate more people like Roger.

Thank you for the support Franko, it means a lot. I was chatting to Mrs TDO about this the other day and she thought it would easily make a 1 hour TV documentary in terms of information if I padded it out with sweeping shots of Aberdeen etc. Sadly I don't have access to lots of library footage and it's a long drive from here!

Thank you, I'm glad you liked the video. Now you mention Firebird, yes they are similar to the Firebird cassette inlays like Booty and Subsunk. I wonder who did them first? Not sure when Firebird first did theirs but I think the Dymond's switched to photo inlays in 1983 sometime.

@@geezerdiamond Run Baby Run (which had previously been published by Micro Gold) was their first Spectrum release, and was advertised in Your Spectrum December 1984, along with a batch of others: Booty, Exodus, The Wild Bunch, Mr Freeze, Terra Force, Viking Raiders, Menace and Crazy Caverns. Cylu came along a bit later the next year. So Dymond Software definitely had the look first!

  • @TheDigitalOrphanage

Sorry, unfortunately there's nothing I can do about that now as YT no longer supply tools to change the volume of a posted video. The levels are fine in Davinci Resolve but I agree when I just compared to some mainstream videos it does sound a little on the quiet side. I think it's like the music scene where everyone is compressing their audio for maximum impact and a player set to that volume makes non-compressed audio sound too quiet. It's an audio volume arms race!
