Just a suggestion, if you spray a little water down on your map before you lay down the plastic wrap, it makes the plastic wrap stick so you’re not having a fight with it while you’re smashing your foam around :)

Absolutely incredible -- I just saw some old leather books that looked like they did this with similar tones and also another with bright colors. Everyone is scratching their head how it was done. Something similar I'm sure. Some suggested bunched up rags but the effect is far more (or exactly) like this!

This is very interesting - I'd never have thought of this technique. Looks much neater and more controllable than using water.

Make your life easier and pick up an aluminum roasting pan from the dollar store. It will help keep your mess contained. All though you did well keeping it clean. You can usually dye a couple of project pieces before it gets too muddy.

If its acrylic water based paint you should have positive results. Making a tie dye custom order patch now and am about to experiment with this technique... thanks for posting this. I never considered shaving cream but this opens up a whole new world for me when it comes to staining leather products....

I have used paints, good results but leave on longer and do touch the face of the leather. Rinse under gentle stream of water and allow to air dry. I have been using metallic paints with great results

I've not tried this on anything other than natural/undyed leather, but let me know how it goes if you try it out! 🙂
