Agreed. Not optional!I am a painter (that now dabbles in carpentry) who only uses these with all of my power tools which are mostly Festool. I have 2 Festool ct 26's. I do a lot of sanding. Ive spent years wrestling with dust. Particularly drywall mud inside and sanding through layers and layers of oiled based paints on old exteriors. As Mr. Paulk has demonstrated in this video. You can PACK these bags (including drywall dust) to the max and they do NOT lose suction!!! I do try not to pack em like that but, both of my machines still run like day 1 anyway. Not only that but, in my neck of the woods when I show up with these units (or a PAULK Total station stained Festool beige and black) saw, route and sand with almost ZERO dust mess people notice. Other contractors notice. I get work because of these machines. To Mr. Paulks point I agree 100% that these be considered not optional!. Once you experience not making the mess, breathing easier and not to mention the amount of sandpaper saved you will find the investment is way worth it.

On the bags for the CT vacs, if you pull the tab on the bag mount it slides up and closes the inlet to the bag. Keeps dust from burping out when you remove the bag. These vacuums are worth every penny and my customers love how clean their houses are when I am working and when done. Thank you Paul for the great videos and information!

When I got the email about your uploading another video and saw the typo on the headline (at that time it said "primay tool" and "not and afterthought") I thought I'd rush over to KZread and let you know so you could correct it... When I got to KZread you had already corrected it. You're the greatest man, very professional in every way. Love your uploads.

Thanks for this video @Ron Paulk. This may be the most important tool because it is protecting you, the users', lungs as well as those of your clients. It saves cleanup time which equals money saved. You present a more professional appearance to clients when you work without making a mess. As you said dust collection/control should be thought of as a primary, not secondary tool or an afterthought. Having worked in construction for over 35 years I've eaten more than my share of dust. Way back we (the industry) didn't care but thankfully today the attitude is changing. If you're not going to look out for your own health don't expect anyone else to do it for you is what I tell the new guys, and then I tell them some horror stories from some terribly dirty jobs I have worked to scare them straight.

Hi Ron, Just wanted to shoot you a thank you. All your talk about dust control hit a mark with me. I finally broke down and bought a Festool dust extractor and now I don't know how i've made due with out one. I can work all day and be virtually dust free, which means my insides are virtually dust free. Now i'm a dust nut, always improving my dust collection systems.

Good video. Many people don't realize that ShopVac (the brand) sells bags for their vacuums. That's what I use, and the bag is the pre-filter, keeping the circular pleated filter very clean. Once I started using the bags, my ShopVac has performed wonderfully, and the filter never clogs. If my vacuum ever dies I'll replace it with a Festool.

Nice vid Ron. I've just finished a bar refurbishment job on which I used my only extractor which is the Festool Midi. The extractor performed admirably but not having it available for every tool further illustrates the need for good dust extraction when you see the difference between tools that have it and those tools that do not. I'm now considering investing in more extractors as appose to some other tooling I was looking to buy.

Festool like Apple - you're buying into a system. The system might be the best (I don't know, I don't have Festool) even if an individual product within that system is not the best in its class.

I could not agree more or stated it better than you did. I occasionally surface grind concrete for decorative coatings. I like two specific industry specific vacs one of which is self cleaning and doesn't use expensive bags, just cheap liners that minimize the mess from changing the bag. The vacs are the extreme clean series Nilfiske. I think I got the spelling correct. For large scale concrete grinding there is a company named pulse-bac. Much high flow rate more like a dust collector. I also would like to add that Oneida Air Systems makes a dust deputy that works with the sortainer on the top of most of the Festool CT series and greatly extends bag life. Final note my experience is that working in a clean work sight produces high quality work.

Dust, health: Yes. But what I value to most is how much better my tools function when dust is cleared properly as you, cut, smooth, etc. Getting that stuff the hell out of the way extends the life and improves performance of my tools immeasurably

@Ron Paulk Hey Ron, thanks for continuing to share your knowledge and experience. My question is: If you were to start over and purchase multiple extractors of the same model, what would you choose? I've never seen the CT series in person, and I'm having a hard time deciding how to balance physical size with capacity. Thanks!

I mostly agree with you regarding dust control tools. I've been happy with the Festool CT MIDI. However, I got tired of overfilled bags, clogged filters, and reduced performance. After a couple tries I found the Oneida DIY Dust Deputy Cyclone, mounted on a 14-gallon blue high density polyethylene lab pack drum, to be my ideal solution for connecting to tools like a table saw, miter saw, and various sanders. After I had emptied the 14-gallon drum three times there was still very little dust in the CT MIDI's bag. Amazon.com had all the pieces I needed. The subject line of my review there is "Wow, why did I wait so long?" That sums up my feeling about the Festool CT MIDI and the dust cyclone connected to it. Thanks for highlighting this topic.

Have a look at Karcher and Nilfisk they have self cleaning technology for their filters that blows air through them to clean them. They also can suck up water and do not require bags which is very handy when dealing with wood.

I tested a Rigid brand shop vacuum with a bag and their next to best filter. Using a laser particle counter the air coming out of my $100 shop vacuum was within healthy limits for particles larger than 0.5 microns and was cleaner than the ambient air in my house and outside my shop. You don't need an expensive Festool vacuum to be safe. If you are vacuuming truly hazardous materials then get a certified HEPA system but for 99% of the jobs most of us do that's just more expense with nearly zero advantage. Adding a cyclone or Thien collector on a 5 galoon bucket before the vacuum will save you a fortune in bags over time and it's much easier to empty.

Tony Shulthise only if you are set up in a shop. if you are mobile and everything is all contained and built ready to go then these are the way to go. spend the time messing around getting a cheap machine to acceptable levels is time wasted not on the job making more money than you save

Cameron2874 There's no more time involved to get good filtration than with using an overpriced machine. The only practical difference is the cost. Just add a $5 bag and a $20 filter and you are ready to go. The only possible practical benefit of a Festool vacuum that I can see is the interlocking storage system that can be added. That may pay for itself in time saved for some contractors.

  • @mjrwey

The noise difference alone is worth the price. The bags work better, the filter isn't in the way when trying to use one , like on the shop vac styles. Hold way more sawdust in the bags. Adjustable speeds for better dust control depending on the application, turns on with the power tool. They are a superior dust collector. I used to be anti Festool, but there is no denying it, they make better tools.

@@Cameron2874 Karcher are not cheap machines but they are not expensive either. You can have one for about $200 that will match most festool vacuums. It can even suck water and does not require a bag either. Both Karcher and Nilfisk are the festool of the cleaning business. I have several of their tools and they are amazing for the price.

@@bighands69 not the point I was asking about as it was size and reliability that was more the point. I invested in a midi 2 years ago now and has been on every job and is a great machine that works hard every day. £5 roughly a bag that does a complete job and hardly any clean up needed on completion so an HR of my time is worth more than £5 and my lungs are not full of dust. Got tested at shop day and machine is still sucking at over 20 cfm which is what is at new. Cracking machine for size and weight in my opinion

I have 5 vacuums. An old 16 gal or so Craftsman that's designated for water cleanup only because it's filter system is only the paper cartridge and not good for dust. One Festool that's mostly used with the track saw and three Shop Vac brand units which all have the ability to use bags, which work extremely well. So well in fact that I can sand at least 300, 12' sheets of drywall using the Porter Cable drywall sander as well as all my other dust making tools from DeWalt jobsite saws to 4x24 belt sanders etc without the vacuums coughing up any dust or losing power. The key is to use the yellow bags as well as the filter cartridge. I've had them for several years and they're still going strong. In addition, I have auto on and off attachments that work exactly the same as the Festool as well as speed control attachments. What I paid for all of these vacs and attachments is about 1/2 of what I paid for the Festool.

Hey! I’m looking at investing in a festool vac. But I don’t really understand the difference between them. I’m a floor layer so will be using it for my concrete Grinder, attaching it my buckets when mixing self levelling compounds and to my mitre saw. I will also be using to vacuum the floors because as you said keeping dust down is important. People attitudes are changing towards dust and we know how dangerous silica dust is now a days so want to keep using a broom to a minimum. Which festool would you recommend for my needs? Thanks for any help you can offer

+Richard Moss If you are in the UK have a look at Nilfisk and Karcher. They are really the leaders in the field of vacuuming for industrial systems. A good Nilfisk can be had for about £250 that will be suitable for most people in construction. it can also suck water, does not require bags (optional), has multi tool fittings so it can be used with different brands. if you want to splash out the money you can buy a nilfisk for the same money as a Festool only it will have higher capacity, great airflow, water suction and self cleaning filters. Even a cheap £150 Nilfisk could match a £400 festool and even exceed it in certain areas. Most tool brands use Nilfisk or Karcher technology in their vacuums. Look at screwfix and online videos.

Make sure to get one of their “auto clean” models (the Ct 36/48) - it helps greatly with fine dust. Will reverse air flow every 10ish seconds to blow dust back through the filter so you don’t lose suction.

Perhaps put in terms of your family - do you want to risk them having a dad who is wheezing with lung disease and can't work? It's easy for guys to take ma carefree attitude to our own health & safety and thinking of family helps correct that foolishness

If you have a festool, Mirka or Mafell sanders and pair them with either Nilfisk or Karcher you will not get any dust either. The thing is that Nilfisk and Karcher cost about a third of the price of a festool but are every bit as good because they are high end vacuum companies that produce for many industries. There range also can suck up water and do not require bags.

I am not happy with all Festools, i spent $20000 last year but i think i wasted $10000, Festool company know they have got lots of design and efficiency problems but they are not trying to decrease the price, another sheet policy that they have is they are working on sizes of accessories as well i mean if you want to have screw driver tip definitely you have to buy Festool one because you couldn't fit any other Brands. Anyway they are ripping you off and majority of sales man or woman doesn't have enough knowledge to lead you in a right path and one more thing is the weight of all tools and another problem is that mostly those aren't ergonomic.

Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice this way. Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from the inside out. Look for signs that you are saved. Things like spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you're not bearing fruit then keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!
