Dust Collection Blast Gates

I'm dealing with a migraine and no sleep, but I wanted to put together a quick video about ABS and cast aluminum gates.

Just seeing this as i searched for good guidance on installing a dust collection system with blast gates. I found that my aluminum gates didn't seem to "seal" if they were installed the correct side up. Or at least it seemed so. Perhaps they would be "pulled into a seal" as the vacuum kicks in. But without the ability to test (I mean who actually has one of those tools!) I decided to make some additional adjustments to the gates. I basically put some slim, slick plastic inside so the gate could still slide shut - but this "shimming" effect enhance the little nubby thing's action of boosting the gate up tight against the gate housing - and seemed to eliminate the gap I had been seeing. Hate to tell you this little exercise took me an hour to fine tune 3 gates. But I'm more confident now that I'll have tight seals, and less air leakage (and more effective cfm through the system). Thanks for opening the door to a better gating system!

Great info brother! I just finished piping my system and looking for options to install the blast gates. thank you

Great tips. Jim Krenov used to say perception was everything or something like that. You've made it possible to use a pair of 10" cast aluminum blast gates acquired in a lot of used merchandise. The cheapest I can find, they'd have cost $130 new for the pair and still not be worth using. Thank you.

That's really helpful, just about to install the blast gates when I saw your video. Saved me a lot of time, money and hassle. Thank you for putting your helpful information out there.

Good info. I wouldn't have even thought of that. So far, the channel is killer. Good job on the editing.

Very helpful. I have plastic gates that broke before I even completed my dust collection system. Going to get the aluminum ones. Thanks.

Neat, I learned some stuff watching this video. In my case I ended up with a dust collector powerful enough that the small leaks in my aluminum gates don't matter, as that 20CFM is less than 2% of suction loss, but to someone who has a smaller dust collector, that could be as much as 10% suction loss, and that makes a big difference.

I'll have to go check all the gates at the shop. I use them above the motor making and soldering stations. Great fix!

It makes a difference. It's also quieter when you don't have the whistling of air being sucked through that slot.

Well this is very cool and I learned something. All my 12v career I have work in big box stores and never got the chance/experience to do/learn fab work ( even my with my stint @ Tweeter Etc I was in management so rarely a chance to get my hands dirty 😂). This late in the game I have decided to rehabs the garage and make it into a work shop ( spring can’t come fast enough). Thanks for sharing the vast knowledge you have...I appreciate it greatly

Thanks, man. In my experience a lot of shops are lacking on the dust collection side of things. Whether it's a weak/poorly designed system, or simply not having dust collection at all (I've seen it) it's a bad deal. Not healthy at all. Good dust collection in a home shop is something that will keep the wife happy, too. The better your dust collection, the less mess will get into the house. I'm sure you'll find that a lot of the things I'll be doing on the channel will be good ideas for your home shop.

The gap you measured on does not have the crossectional area of a 4inch pipe. That is going to skew the results on your loss

Do you not drive in a screw through the pipe into the blast gate? If you do put a screw in blast gate would you recommend pre-drilling the vast aluminum?

No screw. The foam I use to seal the gate to the PVC keeps the pipe in place. It's a tight fit.

Have you thought about the self cleaning gates? I had those installed in our shop at the University, much better.

Couldn't you just use an oscillating multitool to cut a thin channel in the bottom of the plastic dust gate to let the dust come out

You could do that if you wanted. I chose the metal gates because of their more robust construction. Since this video I've gone to iVac gates. Don't have the full shop set up with them yet, but I'll eventually get the whole shop on the iVac system. All of the tools are on iVac Pro Tool Plus sensors that kick on the dust collector, but only the outfeed table and CNC have iVac gates. Still need to get them for the table saw and mobile cabinet.
