Duskwood - Music & Ambience - World of Warcraft

Duskwood, originally called Brightwood, is located in the southern-central part of Azeroth, south of Elwynn Forest, east of Westfall, west of Deadwind Pass, and north of Stranglethorn Vale. Technically part of the Alliance and under Stormwind's protection, its distance from the mighty fortress and its close proximity to more malevolent forces in the south and east make it a realm of horror. Due to events central to the Scythe of Elune, Duskwood is a cursed, dying land. Beneath the eternal blanket of darkness which gave Duskwood its current name, the Scythe's effects have transformed what was once a beautiful part of Elwynn Forest into a land covered in gnarled trees and inhabited by the hideous undead and maddened Worgen, brought along with the black fog hanging over the woods.
Duskwood is inhabited by a defiant people who still cling to their holdings in the face of overwhelming adversity. On all sides lurk dangerous creatures, from skeletal warriors and ghouls to ferocious worgen and some of the most powerful members of the Defias Brotherhood. The militia of Duskwood, known as the Night Watch, patrol the main thoroughfare and protect Darkshire, wary of anything moving through the shadows.
The most prominent geographical feature of Duskwood is an ancient and long-dead volcano crater. The crater teems with life, and features one of the Great Trees with a portal leading into the Emerald Dream. The sleeping druids' influence can be seen on the surrounding land, which is cloaked in a twilight quite different from the rest of Duskwood. The woods also feature several abandoned farmsteads, as well as the prominent Raven Hill Cemetery, which holds the graves of the numerous people who have been killed by wild beasts and undead since the darkness fell.

_The terror of these past few weeks is almost more than I can bear; why is it that by writing words into this book I can somehow keep the madness at bay? Perhaps it is as if I'm confessing my sins to a silent companion, or freeing my mind of these tortured thoughts and confining them to paper. I began a journal before this one, but it remains in a place to which I cannot return. So I will start afresh. But this time, I will start from the true beginning._ _It began with the finding of that cursed scythe in the mine they call Roland's Doom. Yes, that was the start of it. Before that, the Defias Brotherhood was happy with our progress in Duskwood. Before the Scythe, the terrors of this place seemed as tame as Northshire Valley._ _But ever since I found the haft of the Scythe jutting from that pile of rubble in the mine and, curse me, pulled it free, Roland's Doom became a place of vile death!_ _If I had known what would happen, I would have cut off my own hand to keep from grasping that rune-carved wood. So many regrets! I always thought that was a privilege of the old. I now know that it is not the old - it is the hopeless - who don the mantle of regret, unable and unwilling to shrug it from shoulders stooped with misery._ _But enough waxing like a pipe-mad poet. I must continue with the chronicle..._

_After the Scythe was freed, a change rippled through the mine. Light from our flickering torches warped, and the strength of our voices seemed beyond our control. Sometimes a man's whisper roared through the tunnels forcing hands on ears, and sometimes our shouts barely traveled a few steps before diminishing into a hint on the wind. Unnerving, yes, but we did not have long to wonder at this strangeness. It was but a harbinger of what truly drove us from the mine. The Worgen._ _They came at us from everywhere, clawing from hidden holes at our feet and dropping upon us from silent perches above. Half our men fell in those first panicked minutes. The rest, including myself, tried to flee. As I ran I saw so many of my brothers taken by tooth and claw, heard so many screams cut short or gurgle to silence. For all I know, I am the only human to escape that place._ _I can only guess why I survived that night. I have always been cautious, always quick to flinch from jabs and leap free of pitfalls. My nickname, Jitters, comes from this trait. So perhaps it was just that knack for caution that saved me..._ _Or maybe it was the Scythe I pulled from the rubble. It cannot be the Scythe itself, for I lost it during my frantic flight. But if it was I who brought the Worgen to Duskwood, then perhaps the Worgen afforded me a rare courtesy. Curse them. Or perhaps, I am doomed to witness the change I wrought on Duskwood. Perhaps it is my fate to watch as the Worgen tear into this land, staining it ever darker with their foulness. If that truly is my fate, then it is twofold. For the Worgen are not the only power to clutch at Duskwood - the fiends from Deadwind Pass have also staked claim._ _That is the next chapter of my tale, and I pray it is the last..._

_After surviving the flight from Roland's Doom, I hid within a barn owned by a man named Sven. I spent a few days in the barn, and such horror lingered with me that I never once made myself known to Sven or his family. But from what I saw from my hiding place, I knew these farmers were quite decent folk. Had I stepped from my concealment I think they would have taken me in, but trust is hard for me. Harder still after that shock in the mine. So I remained hidden. And it saved my life._ _A few days after I arrived at the barn, Sven left his farm for Darkshire. He kissed his wife and smiled to his children and promised to return soon with toys and sweets. The poor man. That was the last time he saw his family unmutilated. At least they parted happily. And at least his wife was the first to die, and was freed from seeing the slaughter of her children. But these small graces do nothing for me. I saw what happened, and it will ever haunt my dreams._ _My hand trembles as I recall the details of that night, when Sven was away and his family was doomed to face the Black Riders alone. Again regret claws at me, for I was there and could have risen against those fiends from Deadwind Pass. But it is a false regret. It is the same that plagues any survivor of a tragedy. I know that, had I left my place of hiding I too would have been killed, my body ripped and torn, and its pieces spread so widely that I would not be recognized._ _But, even though I know I could have done nothing to stop this heinous murder, one true regret does remain: I brought the Black Riders to Sven's farm. My discovery of the Scythe not only unleashed the Worgen upon Duskwood - it drew the Riders from Deadwind Pass. I know this because, just before they began their slaughter they asked one question to Sven's wife as she held her children close, giving them what comfort she could though she was certain death was near._ _"The Scythe of Elune." one of the Riders shrieked in a voice both harsh and shrill, like the grinding of an axe on stone. And the last word - Elune - it croaked, as if choking on the sound. Dread gripped me when I heard that voice, both from the horrid sound of it, and because... I knew the Scythe of which the Rider spoke. It must be the same cursed thing I drew from the rocks of Roland's Doom days before. It was what the Black Riders sought! And it was what would kill Sven's family._

_I never learned the name of Sven's wife, as she was only ever called "dearest," and "my love," and "mommy" by her husband and children. But I wish I knew it. I am the only living memory of her deed that day, and although she was just a farmer's wife, never have I seen a man or woman act with such bravery. Of course she did not know of the Scythe, but when she learned the Riders sought it, in an instant a plan formed in her head. And it was bold and clever. If only it had worked._ _"The Scythe?" she said in a calm voice. "Of course I do. Who here wouldn't?" She looked at the Riders with steady eyes, and I would have sworn she spoke the truth if I had not known better. There was no way she could know about the Scythe. Her gambit paid off. The same Rider who uttered the question before bent his head slightly toward her, and shrieked, "Where?"_ _"I'll take you. All of you," she said, and I could see a small hope flicker behind her eyes._ _"But the way is far, and my children would slow us. We must leave them."_ _Her trick was simple, but simple tricks have the best hope of success. If it worked, it would lead the Riders away from the farm. She would be lost, but her children would be safe. And it would work, if only the Riders believed her noble lies._

_Although I have never been a student of the Light, I prayed fiercely for Sven's wife as she stood against those terrible Riders. "Please," I prayed. "Let them believe."_ _They stood, frozen, and she met their gazes with calm. Then one rider looked up, as if hearing a distant call. He drew from his garb a small gem and peered into it. He then gestured with the bauble toward Sven's wife. A light crept from the Rider toward the woman, shaping itself into a grim, white hand. She stared into the light, unflinching, but I could see uncertainty behind her mask of confidence. When the hand reached her, it spread its fingers over her head._ _And it squeezed._ _Sven's wife stood rigid as a board, and her eyes grew wide. And although her lips pulled back to mouth a scream, no sound escaped. After a few moments of this torture the hand released her, dropping her to her knees. The Rider who held the bauble then sat erect in his saddle, and a loud voice erupted from it._ _"This woman lies," it said in a voice that has scarred my dreams. "She has not seen the Scythe."_ _After this, the Rider's shoulders stooped slightly, as if a spirit within him had fled. And then in the old, shrieking voice it used earlier, these final words were uttered:_ _"The Lord has spoken. Kill them."_

_I cannot describe what happened next. It is clear in my mind, but even my wretched soul cannot put to paper the events of those next few, grisly minutes._ _I can only write that Sven's family was killed. And soon after, Sven returned to this grim, deathly scene. Such grief was in him that I was afraid to show myself. And so afraid was I that he would find me, I fled from my hiding spot in the barn. I do not know where Sven is now, but I pray he will, some day, find peace._ _I spent the next few weeks moving from place to place, never lingering for fear of the Riders. I am now in the abandoned town of Raven's Hill, as always, hiding. I cannot face whatever power they used against Sven's wife, and I know it searches Duskwood, even still, for the Scythe. It is lost to me, and I thank the Light for this, for had I kept it I know I would have been found. Even now, I know in my heart that I will be found._ _I'm so tired._ _- Jitters’ Completed Journal_

I remember back in 2005 I was so fascinated by the world that I left Elwyn forest with my noob human priest in pursue of adventure and headed in a random direction. I stumbled upon a small river, the other shore looked a lot gloomier to boost my curiosity even more. So I swam across the river and went uphill. The surroundings and nature were becoming darker and darker, the air was filled with sense of danger. Then in a few moments I was attacked by a huge ghoul with an skull on the mob's icon. I was dead in like a couple of seconds but left with a falvour full of mystery and anticipation of future adventures. That was the most pleasant death in the my whole gaming history.

First of all, I love Earth Worm Jim, so great icon, OP. Secondly, I first played in 2004 or so and I was mystified by my Night Elf Druid and the starting zone on Teldrassil. I spent like 3 weeks getting off of that island and I loved every minute of it. My climb to level 60 was brutally slow, both because of internet, and because of time limits. I'll never forget earning my first set of Wildheart Armor, either. I have memories in this world. They are windows I look through with my mind's eye. So fondly remembered, all my friends and foes. The grind for gold back then was unreal. ...ah yes... ...there were times I believed I was Viera the Night Elf Druid.

My favourite quest in all of WoW came from here, with the tale of Morgan Ladimore. I was a human paladin so of course I ventured in, and low-level as I was wanted to go out questing into this dark spooky zone. Get my hands dirty fighting zombies, but discover this old gravestone with disturbed dirt. ...Lo and behold it belongs to a former soldier, Morgan, who died fighting the good fight and believing his family all dead. I'm tasked to take down the undead beast he's been turned into, and it's the most pitched battle I've had yet. ...Then I get to tell him his daughter survived, and he grants me the Restored Archeus, this old beautiful blade for the Light. ...Still have that thing in my bank, and transmog it to be the look of my sword in every new expac as I journey forth. Still the most personal, warm quest I've ever had.

But I didn't have a say on these, life's a bitch (always had PC/internet issues and parents who wouldn't let me play 😑 I want a second life, preferably in a world that lets you enjoy things...). I remember the first time I ran through Duskwood from Westfall. I was playing a human mage and wanted to explore. I remember seeing the woods and wondering what was over there, so I decided to make the trek and investigate. It was so eerie. The music and scenery really didn't help the fact I happened to be playing at night. And then it happened; a wolf which high level came charging at me. I freaked out and cast frost nova to trap it in place and took off running. The wolf gave chase and I was blinking just to stay ahead because the thing was so fast. My heart was beating and I was praying for the cooldown to end just so I could cast frost nova again. Thankfully, I was able to get out of there before the thing got me. I stayed in Westfall and Redridge for awhile before I ventured into Duskwood again. I will say that the Stalvan Mistmantle quest chain is one of my all time favorites and (IMO) has the second greatest name for an item in the game: the Ring of Forlorn Spirits.

I am Sir Thomas Bates of the Brotherhood of the Horse. I come to Scarlet Raven Tavern in Darkshire every night to people watch. You don't get too many travelers in Duskwood. Ever since the curse of eternal night fell on the land, only the brave, the strong, or the foolish come here. I see young men drink their fill of mead, make their exit, and never return. The forests are not kind to adventurers. Restless dead and wolf men lie in wait for the unwary who do not understand the perils of Duskwood, thinking their quests to be as simple as the Kobolds up north. How I pity them. For years this has been the story, good men going into the wilderness just to fuel the ranks of the dead. It is high time I returned to my patrol, the tavern noise makes me weary. More than thirty years I have served this place for the Alliance, and I do not intend to retire any time soon. Sleep can wait until this cursed ground finds peace... I am Sir Thomas Bates of the Brotherhood of the Horse. I have been dead since the First War. But I do not care. There are people to protect. So be cautious when you ride into these woods... You never know who or what may be watching.

There is just something unnervingly calming about undead or dark and gloomy areas. Every shadow can hide a foe. Every corner can be your doom. Every tree, stone and piece of ground appears to be looking at you, or ready to give way for something foul and horrendous. The very air and atmosphere is thick with suspense and you can almost feel and smell the cold forest air as you're immersed in the almost completely inescapable darkness that calls from all around you. The grass has a sludgy wetness to it, the trees are the kind of moist that exists in swamps, but being a forest makes it just so much worse. The very stone seems to break and reform with every passing moment, and the dirt itself just feels deathly hateful of you. Welcome... to the realm of the Forsaken/Undead Scourge. Here, there truly be monsters.

Amazing zone. I remember being scared to go off the path and eventually checking out all the farms and buildings around the town thinking I would find someone. The long quest lines with Stalvin, Sven, the Worgen, the Embalmer...so much back story it fit the epic nature of the gameplay. I remember feeling like an explorer going through the tunnel that connected the crypts in the graveyard. Loved the abandoned little town, and the desperate feel to the one remaining inhabited town.

I remember coming out of Elwynn Forest for the first time to the fork in the road between Redridge Mountains on the left and Duskwood on the right, and going right and seeing the lights dim and the music change to some kind of Ravenloft type zone and there being some big ole spiders that could one shot me if I got too close, and I thought.... man, this game is awesome. There aren't too many zones in the whole game, in any xpac, with whatever intangible Duskwood has to make it so striking and memorable, but whatever Duskwood has, it has it in spades.

I remember my first experience with Duskwood. My brother and I, were 12 and 11 respectfully, and going through Elwynn - our computers are in separate rooms so we're shouting at each other through the hallway. We're both a little curious what's beyond the river, so he goes ahead of me and says: "Oh dude, there's skeletons here. OH DUDE THE SKELETONS HAVE SKULL LEVELS!" And I was like: "What?! That's crazy!" So I followed behind him. He, using his braincells, rain away. I, not using my braincells, walked closer to the cemetery and one skeleton aggroed me from an obnoxious range. I ran away terrified, but the bugger got me just before I can get out of its aggro radius. Fun times.

Still my favorite zone in the game. It's like having an on-demand Halloween vibe all year round. Gilneas is a VERY close second, and honestly I still feel Gilneas is severely underutilized. I wish they'd rebuild it and make it a second hub city, similar to how Orgrimmar has Undercity as a sort of "sister" city.

Yes i agree. I remember my first toon a worgen warlock, shellock. I made him on my moms account when i was a child, i got my account a decade later and used a character transfer and also switching my name into something with a V. We can stop the furry jokes about worgen and start pulling them at the vulpera more😅because some players enjoy worgen because of their edgy and pheraps gothic lore.

Duskwood is one of those regions that was screaming to have an instance. I always wanted to learn more about the Dark Riders and was never really satisfied with how Blizzard handled them(not to mention it took them many years and expansions to get back to it when I was long done with the game anyways). How awesome would it have been to discover that the catacombs under Ravenhill were actually much deeper and the Riders had been spotted after you kill off Morbent Fel and think the zone is basically saved?

There was soo much things to remember of dusk wood. It was the first place I've been where the mobs dropped silver instead of copper, and I specifically remember the picture 'painted' in my mind of a zombie standing blocking the path to the ghost women's house. Then there was the time in good old war lords of draenor before the leveling blend in leigion. I remember the bears roaming besides the dark ominus rivers when I was still level 18 in westfall, with half my gear broken because I didn't know how to repair it back then, and staring at the level 24 bears on the other side. The zone was so scary that I didn't even want to finish the leveling experience, since back then I was only in grade 3. I got to the pumpkin patch quest and then just went back to the saftey of stormwind to spam dungeons and kill mobs before my level 34 sister came along and swimmed with me through the river to northern stranglethorn.

I remember looking across the river as I was out mining gold near Lakeshire so that I might craft better armor for myself, and seeing a place in stark contrast to where I was in Elwynn Forest. A dark and foreboding place. I felt compelled to cross the river to get a closer look, so I swam across. As I made my way inland it became darker and darker. I spoke to no one in Darkshire, as I wandered past withering farms and broken down houses and barns. This would be my first encounter with the un-dead. Being inexperienced in combat with such creatures, I tried my best to avoid direct contact until I reached the Raven Hill Cemetery. As I looked upon the many gravestones in the field something moved behind me. I never saw him coming or even heard his footsteps. As I lay on the ground the last sight I saw was a huge lumbering skeleton dressed in armor and a helm turning away from me and disappearing into the darkness once again. Somehow, I awoke back in Darkshire, my warriors armor damaged, and my health condition was poor to say the least. I soon left that place realizing I had made a great mistake in coming here. I was ill prepared for the horrors that existed in this cursed land. I made a promise to myself as I looked back across the river from Lakeshire, that one day I would return to that cursed place and rid Azeroth of the huge skeletal warrior who hunted the living there. The one they called Mor'Ladim. It was only after I eventually returned to Darkshire that I learned his sad and tragic story. What had started out in my mind as a desire for revenge and retribution turned into an act of compassion and sympathy as I finally ended Morgan Ladimore's grief and suffering. Placing his last surviving daughter's ring at his now, final resting place, his spirit spoke to me. He could now be at peace knowing his daughter Sarah had survived, and in gratitude offered his sword, Archeus. To use it for what it was originally meant for. To serve the light and the good people of Azeroth. I will never forget my time in Duskwood or that particular quest until the end of my days.

I remember when I first started playing WoW in 2008, this place gave be the creeps. I remember 1st crossing the river dividing it from elwynn forest. I was too low level. This is before I knew the mobs were lvl 19-20+ I was only about lvl 7 at the time. I died almost instantly when I was swarmed by wolves and spiders. I thought, man, it's gonna take me a long time to lvl high enough to fight these guys. Then when I was high enough to enter Duskwood, I ran into the wandering "Stitches". He killed me almost as quick.

This place used to scare the daylights out of us when we played. I was terrified of Mor'Ladim, and always ran when I saw him approaching in Raven Hill cemetary. As I got better at playing and leveled up, I liked to return to Duskwood. Whenever I was at Raven Hill I'd be sure to go upstairs in one of the houses and buy the Shadow Oil recipe from the goblin vendor as it would always sell well at the AH.
