    The uncensored version is the original video which was specifically made for American dance clubs and also to generate a stir in the USA. The censored version as seen of course was edited so it could be aired for a mainstream audience and for MTV when MTV came out. When the song and video was released, there was no MTV.

    This is early Duran Duran. They made this video for night clubs. They started playing in night dance clubs but because they were so handsome their record company started promoting them on teen magazines and that and their music videos turned them into teen idols on the 80s. Oh, this is the clean version of the video. 😅 DD are more than an 80s band... they nevered stopped making albums and touring. So many hits on 15 studio albums!

    They took the name from sci - fi film "Barbarella", where there is the crazy scientist Durant Durant. You should have done the extended "Late Night Version". Btw. the video is created by Lol Creme & Kevin Godley, who were in the band 10 CC, guitarist and drummer respectively. I think you have reacted to "I'm Not In Love" by 10 CC. Creme & Godley were hugely successful with their video enterprise in the 80's. Duran Duran has its roots on art school. Founding members John Taylor and Simon Colley who left early, were both in art school. Singer Simon LeBon was a drama student. From early on they had the image set on "modern city with lights, life and excitement" as the drummer Roger Taylor put it, comparing it to the UB 40 whose rehearsal room was next to Duran Duran, singing down to earth songs of living on the dole. They both are from Birmingham, UK and had rehearsal rooms above the club Rum Runner. Please search for video "Duran Duran The Early Days". It tells the story how it all started :)

  • @billw715

    @billw715

    Жыл бұрын

    As a Duran Duran fan for over 40 years, please don't search for "Duran Duran The Early Days" as a reference to learn about the ban as identified by the comment above. The information noted is inaccurate as referenced. Simon Colley is not a "founding" member of Duran Duran. Founding members of Duran Duran are childhood friends Nick Rhodes and John Taylor who had known each other since far before the band was started. During the band's formation John Taylor's school mate at art college, Stephen Duffy, who Taylor met at art school also was a founding member for the Duran Duran. Duffy, their vocalist left the band to go solo. Singer Simon Colley then joined the band. Soon after, Roger Taylor, Duran Duran's drummer, joined the band and when Roger Taylor joined, John Taylor switched from guitar to the bass. Andy Wickett joined as well. Simon Colley left Duran Duran and Wickett became the band's vocalist. Duran Duran wrote an earlier version of Girls On Film with Wickett. Wickett then left Duran Duran and bought out Wickett's rights to the song. Duran Duran also did this with song Rio and Wickett. Wickett then left Duran Duran and then Alan Thomas joined briefly as their singer. Then he left and Andy Taylor joined as their guitarist and soon after, its was Simon Le Bon joining as Duran Duran's as their vocalist. The line-up of Nick Rhodes and John Taylor (DD co-founders) and Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor and Simon Le Bon is the iteration that got their first record deal and released their eponymous album in 1981. Nick Rhodes is the longest tenured member of Duran Duran since the band's formation in 1978. Duran Duran is influenced by Glam Rock, Punk Rock and Disco. Bands/artist who had been formative influences are: Roxy Music, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Sex Pistols, Chic, The Velvet Underground, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Blondie, Japan, Sly And The Family Stone, Kraftwerk, Ultravox, Human League, Mick Ronson, Keith Richards, Gary Moore and Angus Young, The Clash, The New York Dolls, Visage and others... I am not sure what you mean by the UB 40. It's actually UB40.

    @@billw715 Ok, but in more liberal sense, which I used, the term founding member is also often in the same meaning as original member. Pardon the inaccuracy. The John Taylor / Nick Rhodes connection becomes clear if watching the documentary. All that you are pointing out to the great detail is explained in it as well.

We are all human- mistakes can and will be made. 🙂It's about Duran Duran and having the correct information about Duran Duran - that is all. I can comprehend somewhat being an original member to a founding member but typically in a band, there is a separation of being a founding member to an original member. Usually it's one or two people who start the band and then get others to join. And, Simon Colley was never an original member whereas Nick Rhodes was not named at all as he, John Taylor and Stephen Duffy all co-founded the band. Nick and John were friends since they were ten and twelve years old and then started the band when they were about 16 and 18 years old

    the song is about Model exploitation (this is more of the photography (fuses pumping - flash photography) era than the then video booths, xxx theaters and beta home video porn era (live heat twisting out in a wire - the cable cords) and way before todays (the 2000s) massive deemed "exploitation" in the adult dvd and streaming era. The original version was actually written by the former front man singer in the band - Andy Wickett. It really is a song that was in front of the adult entertainment barrage that emerged maybe 15 years later when porn or even soft erotica became mainstream. The video is even more amazing as an R rated version was created and was made to be played at clubs or late night tv - and not MTV - that was barely even off the ground if it was at all when the video was shot.

    @billw715

    Жыл бұрын

    @@lauciannailor8884 No, not in this case since Simon Le Bon was a "distant observer" when writing the lyrics to Girls On Film. Le Bon was just a member of a local Birmingham band trying to get a record deal. Supermodels more than likely would not have given him the light of day. Typically, "Supermodels" are associated with the rich or famous or both. Not to some singer in a band playing clubs and seeking that first record contract. No one knew who Simon Le Bon was when the song was written. The song was released in 1981. Le Bon started dating "Supermodels" in 1984 - when he became rich and famous - and then he married one, Yasmin Parvaneh, in 1985. Interesting how that works. So, if the song was written in 1984, you have a point that would be relevant about Supermodels and being married to one and "surely give more insight than being a distant observer."

They and COUNTLESS other bands were basically ripping off Roxy Music without the hard edges that Roxy had in their early years.

    The original Girls On Film video was made for American dance clubs and to stir a bit of controversy. Eventually, MTV became a TV channel later and in order for Duran Duran to have Girls On Film aired- since it contains some nudity- it had to be edited. Ripping off - whatever that means. I don't hear much similarities with the Roxy Music sound and Duran Duran. Duran Duran were more danced and electronic based and their guitar sound was much harder sonically than Roxy Music. And, if you want to talk about "ripping off" every band takes from their influences. Roxy Music is no different than Duran Duran or Led Zeppelin or The Beatles or Elvis Presley. One can easily call out Bryan Ferry and Roxy for taking from Tee Beatles, Elton John, The Kinks, David Bowie and even The King himself, Elvis. You know what? Bands even take from their non-influences, mate. And when bands take from their artists, that's a sign of respect.

    Roxy Music didn't rip off The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Fats Domino and Little Richard? To believe "countless bands rip-off" Roxy Music is such a myopic and naive statement as if Roxy Music are the creators of music. You want to make that claim? Then Roxy Music is stealing from R&B, jazz, and country music which is the foundation of Rock 'n' Roll and the branches that have evolved from it. Music is recycled from the start of its history to now and will well be into the future. Every artists takes from other songs and from other musicians. It comes from writing a song to the techniques and style of play playing it and even recording it. "Accused of exploiting other artists' songs in the Beatles, John Lennon defended himself by saying, “It wasn't a rip-off; it was a love-in.” Paul McCartney's take: “We pinch as much from other people as they pinch from us.” “In the early years, I'd often carry around someone else's song in my head,” Lennon said."

    @@TZ61 Nope, I read your comments in which you said: "They and COUNTLESS other bands were basically ripping off Roxy Music without the hard edges that Roxy had in their early years." Go back to the start of this thread you originated and make sure you follow the chronology. Another misperception by you.

    @@corkydukeII5898 i was watching the entire 60s, waiting for my chance to be free. In 1978, I finally turned 18,,and almost overnight, leather, and denim, were replaced by pink and lime plastic. Girls with long flowing hair,in lace, and peasant dresses were replaced by boyish looking girls,Girls, with short hair. Instead of beautiful acoustic created music, cheap keyboards,and robot sounds were all the rage. You could see what we were losing. While everyone was sniffing coke,and constantly changing their hair.
